I am away from home on another computer but how I wish I could reply to you all - you are so interesting. Thank you very much for answering. At an early glance many of you mention health as being one of your reasons and again many talk about animal cruelty and this is sad. I, myself, don't like eating animals and could easily stop if those around me didn't. I have never thought of the health issues but I certainly hate the idea of battery hens or anything like that. Once again thank you and if there are any more replies I will read them before selcting a best one tomorrow. Once again , thanks

Yes, and have been for over 23 years.

I gave up meat because there was a lot of press coverage linking high meat intake with rheumatoid arthritis which my grandmother (a great meat lover) suffered from very badly. As I learned more about animal welfare and other similar issues, it simply strengthened my resolve.

I wouldn't say I'm the healthiest person in the world, and in fact had a brush with cancer a few years ago, but I'm sure that I feel a dam sight better not eating meat than I would do otherwise.

No

No i am not, but I have heard that religion does play in "some" veg's lifestyle. Some just dont like meat.

no

i am a vegetarian, it is because i hate to see animals die for food, they should be able to live a normal life, also for health reason, i first became a vegetarian because i was over weight, but then i realized how many healthy animals were being killed for food, and i just literally started crying... i have been a vegetarian for 4 years now, and i am more healthier than ever. I hate animals being killed... why do you want to know if we are a vegetarian and why we became one?

No way! I couldn't do it. My ex boyfriend was though, he was allergic to meat, if he ate meat he would be sick.

No I'm not a vegetarian, never considered it

no I'm omnivorous

I'm a carno-tarian. Salad sucks. It better have a face or I won't eat it.

yes because i can't bear to eat an innocent animal that has been killed just to give me some food! there is plenty of vegetarian food that causes no suffering to animals so i don't see why everybody can't just eat that!
why, are you a vegetarian / thinking of becoming one / hate their guts and can't stand them just like loads of other people who regularly visit this section?

I am, but not a strict vegetarian.
I eat chicken, and steak and pork.

But just not fish that's disgusting.

no, i enjoy a big of steak too much.

I am and it is in respect for creatures. I believe it is a sin to draw blood from an innocent animal who has no choice in the matter. The way animals have their lives taken away is an atrocity. I am perfectly healthy and a prime example of the fact that you do not need to eat meat.

No. And i'll never become one.. I love meat! Besides fish.

I haven't eaten meat since I was 13 (I'm almost 17 now). Its for a few different reasons, I didn't really like the taste of meat or the idea of eating something that used to be alive. I don't wear leather or suede or anything like that either. (converse all the way, baby! woo!) I don't have anything against people who do eat meat though, unless they have something against me, but on the flip side eco terrorists do annoy me a little.

im not but the wife and kids are... and in 20 years ive watched my weight drop from 16stone to just over 11... im healthy.. and happy.

i still eat meat... sliced pig, or bacon is wonderful... i NEVER eat fast food, its neither fast nor food...

oh, and im in a wheelchair, so exercise isnt what youd expect it to be, so i must control my diet...

sylvia is creative in the kitchen... i also cook, curry, chilli and pasta dishes, with or without meat... in fact i eat what i like, not whats good for me... and sylvia is the same size12 as she was 26years ago when we met...

I've been a vegetarian since the age of 7 (I'm now 22). I turned veggie on realising where my food came from. I don't see what gives us the right to subject any creature to pain and suffering.

I could go on for hours about why I became a veggie but I won't!

I eat everything in moderation and still have religion, respect for wild life and the planet,I think the vegans do it basicaly because the don`t like meat.

no I'm not but i have got friends who are an they do it because they love animals an stuff like that ,some food is pretty tasty i like tofu with noodle an vegetables in .

Yes I am a vegetarian, well I don't eat meat anyway. Have been for 16 years - for me its a combination if laziness because eating meat seemed like too much of an effort when I was young. Plus I think animals are treated too badly, I hate to see them in transporters to slaugher houses. I wouldn't have a problem if people killed their own but animals are treated like worthless commodities which I don't think is right!

yes I am, you can say because of religion but really its because i wanted too. My parents gave my the choice since they are alos vegetarian but my sisters aren't. I was off and on with vegetarian thing .Sometimes I would be or not be. Then when I was 7 I became a real vegetarian and stuck to it. I like being a vegetarian and I am healthy and fit. I have respect for animals just by being one.

I am a vegetarian and have been most of my life, ever since i was very young I never liked the taste or texture of meat and refused to eat it from an early age. I love animals more than people and why would I want to eat them - they deserve the right of life. I am not religious at all.
It is proven that the vege diet is the healthiest & vegetarian woman have the healthiest babies & plecentas!!

Yep. Just am. Meat seems revolting. I really can't understand how people can stick it in their mouths and chew it and swallow it.

I am a vegan.

This is mainly for animal welfare but my religion places high value on animal life and improved health is a plus.

I became a vegetarian at 7 and a vegan at 16.Am now 25 and 100% healthy.

I'm a vegan for health reasons and out of respect for animals and our planet. I could never go back to being an omnivore.

I am, out of respect for creatures. I love animals too much to support the common practice of cramming them into too small crates, pumping them full of so many hormones that they can't even support their own weight and are forced to lay in their own **** untill they are dipped live into boiling wax and then sent through machines that only torture them further before killing them.

I became vegetarian a month after my sister did, when we were 14(twins). Now we are 16. Our whole family is vegetarian. For a few months I was vegan, but I stopped recently, but my family has showed interest in becoming vegan, so we are all going to be vegan.

yes i am, and i love it! i do it because i dont think its right to go and kill another being just to eat it when we can survive without doing so. also my mum and sis are vegetrains so they influenced me.

i want to, im thinking about it, i hate to see animals die

not even for immortality

good question. I've been fortunate enough (in my opinion) to have been brought up and raised in a vegetarian family, so I've never really questioned it. Although the part of my religion I belong to does prescribe vegetarianism, according to our scriptures, I'd ascribe my being vegetarian to both family and personal values, along with health, respect and love for animals, and just because I don't need meat to survive and live healthily. I'm very much interested in veganism and strongly prefer vegan food and other items. I personally don't want to justify being vegetarian on religious reasons because I know people from my religion who eat everything.
Given my background, I have great respect for those who consciously made the effort to become a veg*n on their own. Kudos for them, I know it must not be easy.

the biggest reason by far is my sense of compassion for other living beings and the recognition of the injustice of treating animals so brutally. i also think eating any kind of flesh is just disgusting! and finally i like the health benefits you get by being a vegetarian or vegan.
