To be Vegetarian?!

Question:

To be Vegetarian?

I've been thinking about becoming one for about 4 months now.
I'm deeply interested in starting it ASAP
My only concerns, are a.)how will I get the protein that I'm missing from meats? b.) Should I just eat chicken? c.) I've tried some of the vegetarian fake-meat products, and they're not that great-tasting.
Any good brands?

A)MYTH: "Vegetarians get little protein."

Fact: Plant foods offer abundant protein. Vegetables are around 23% protein on average, beans 28%, grains 13%, and even fruit has 5.5%. For comparison, human breast milk is only 5% (designed for the time in our lives when our protein needs are as high as they'll ever be). The US Recommended Daily Allowance is 8%, and the World Health Organization recommends 4.5%.

MYTH: "Beans are a good source of protein."

Fact: There is no such thing as a special "source of protein" because all foods -- even plants -- have plentiful protein. You might as well say "Food is a good source of protein". In any event, beans (28%) don't average much more protein per calorie than common vegetables (23%).

b)no

c)There are lots of different brands,it really comes down to personal preference.I heard morningstar is good, but alot of their products use eggs and milk so I don't know

Hello,
Beans and Peanuts have LOADS of proteins. Some of my friends are Vegetarian and they feel good about it. Hope it helps!!!

It sounds like you want to become vegan.Ovo-lacto vegetarians(sometimes judged as not being true vegetarians) eat milk and egg products.
Im not a vegan but I have friends who are. You can gain protein from legumes and nuts. Tofu takes on the flavors of anything its cooked in.
Morning Star Farms and Boca burger make good veggie products found in any major market.
If you have a Trader Joes near you they carry alot of good vegetarian soups etc. Good luck.

I am not convinced vegetarian is right for everyone. However, if you are planning on being a lacto-ovo vegetarian, (eating dairy and eggs) you can easily get plenty of protein in cottage cheese, yogurt, eggs, cheeses, etc. I know a doctor that is really into the "eat right for your type" diet and would only advise you being vegetarian if you are an "A" blood type. If you are "O" you should probably not go vegetarian.

You can eat fish and get plenty of protein. Tofu, of course, is also high in protein, but again, too much can increase estrogen-like responses in your body due to high "phyto-estrogens" found in soy product (soy milk, tofu, and tempeh.)
So go vegetarian, but eat fish, tofu and eggs, and dairy and you should be fine.

You should definitely not eat chicken at all. If you want to be vegetarian, go all the way or it won't make sense. Yes, some of the fake meats aren't that great but I just blended together chocolate silk soymilk and some silken tofu and ice. It made a wonderful smoothie and I got a whole lot of protein from it. You don't have to eat the fake meats, you can just eat a lot of fruits and vegetable along with your pasta and everything else. Meat isn't as important as it's cracked up to be and it's awful for you. Hope it helps!

Vegetarians get most of their protein from whole grains, and beans, nuts and seeds. If your not eliminating dairy and eggs, these are also good sources of protein. The fake-meat products don't really have much taste. They are most useful when you want the texture of meat. Use them in dishes where you don't specifically taste the meat. Spaghetti sauce, chili, and such. If you eliminate dairy and eggs, you will have to make sure that you balance your amino acids. Whole grains don't contain all the essential amino acids. Neither do beans. If you eat a serving of each during the day, you will get all that you need.

a. There's been a lot of disputes about incomplete protiens when you're not eating meat but in actuality, as long as you're eating your daily recommendation of calories, you should be good on your protein intake.

b. If you're eating chicken, you won't be a vegetarian. I think that chicken can be pretty scary when you think about all the stuff they pump into those chickens before they put them out on the meat market. Have you ever seen "supersize me?"

c. I've tried several types of vegetarian "meat" and you're right a lot of them taste weird. However, if you go to an asian market, you can usually find mock duck, or mock chicken in the frozen section which is pretty good. Morning star does have a lot of good meat-less meat products as well. I really like their morning veggie patties, I personally think they taste almost the same as real morning patties. Trader Joe's also sells meatless morning patties which are really good. Smart-bacon is also really good. I personally haven't found any "ground beef" that I really think taste any good, but my boyfriend loves the one made my yves, it's not bad, but as a meat substitute, I just don't enjoy it. I also hear that yves hot dogs have been rated number one by customers, but I haven't actually tried them myself. Whenever I tried to make veggiedogs they usually turn out slimy, YUCK.

If you're going out for Asian food, a lot of times you can usually substitute meat for mock duck which is pretty good. Also hot-dog-on-a-stick have pretty good veggie dogs.

You don't have to give up eggs and milk if you're going to be a vegetarian if you want to be a vegan you have to give up eggs and milk!

ps: chicken is the only meat i eat! I AM ANTI RED MEAT! woooooo

You don't have to give up eggs and milk to be a vegetarian. You might want to after you have been a vegetarian for a while, but you don't have to. Don't rush yourself.
Great sources of protein are nuts, tofu, beans, and eggs and milk if you choose to eat them. If you don't like the taste of tofu as a meat replacement, try using it in recipes that already call for it. And you can just make/buy foods that are naturally vegetarian, instead of fake meats. Amy's brand has a lot of frozen foods that are vegetarian but not fake meat. Like enchiladas and pot pies.
And remember, America's problem is too much protein, not too little.
Congrats on going veg!
Good Luck!

Ok... I am a VEGAN

Some tips from a true Vegetarian.

1. Are you seriously going to eat a dead cooked leg with veins and blood and muscles and who once belonged to another living creature? or a wing?

2. Are you going to eat an egg who was supposed to become a chicken or its just an egg that came from the vagina hole of a creature? and that has lots of membranes and nutrition for the embryos helloooo not for humans!!!

3. Or are you willing to take another sip of milk that was processed inside a cow's mamary glands? Produced solely for the nutrition of their babies.

4. Or a Tuna that includes dead fish... poor dead fish...have you ever tasted the iron there...its all packed blood and fish.

Advice..in a perfect world we would not harm, kill, eat other creatures....we consider our selves humans but we are just dirty animals that kill other animals to survive.

...Now I am going to the restroom , I feel nauseous.

try morning star farms, they are AMAZING you can get protein from pretty much anything, dont just eat chickens, those chickens most likely go through torture to get on your plate !!!!!

It's great that you have been thinking about it. The next step is to educate yourself. When I decided to give up meat, I picked up some books, I researched on the internet and learned a lot. Protein is not an issue whatsoever. It is plentiful in beans, nuts, whole grains and many other foods.

If you eat chicken, you wouldn't be a vegetarian.

I use Boca crumbles in place of ground meat in many recipes. Mushrooms and beans are great replacements too. You don't have to rely on the fake meat products all the time. I also like Quorn products...it's so much like chicken, it's almost scary LOL.

a)you can get the protein from peanut butter, dry nuts, and soy products

b)you can eat chicken if you want to, some vegetarians eat like chicken and turkey. but i don't eat any meat.

c)the best one i have is BOCA and then MORNING STAR they are the best one I've have and they are most popular also.
