Is being vegetarian and vegan a trend?!

Question:

Is being vegetarian and vegan a trend?

I am a vegetarian and I constantly hear about people being veggie or vegan just because they hear its a hot thing in hollywood. My brother lives in LA and always tells me that he knows a load of vegetarians that do it because its a trend but they always cheat and eat meat or they cant follow through with it. Sometimes when I tell people I'm a vegetarian, they look at me as a follower because it seems like a trend, when I'm actually doing it to be a leader and I have to be very headstrong and brush off all the insults I get for being vegetarian. Anyone else feel the same way?

Being veggie is *not* a trend...

Claiming to be veggie *IS* a trend.

Vegetarians do not eat fish. A fish eater is a Piscivore. Spread the correct word!

its a pathetic anti-american trend.. stupid. sheep never eat meat..

No, people in the Eastern world have been doing that for centuries before us westerners.

If its for health reasons, Id say its probably a trend but for those of us who are vegetarians because of animal concerns, I wouldnt say thats not a trend, at least not for me. People will probably always insult our way but the truth is were are proven to be healthier and live longer, healthier lives. Of course we have to get our protein and thats easy if we eat our veggie meats and beans (fish and eggs for those who eat that). veggie meats are higher in protein than real meat and have no or very little fat and no cholesterol and high in other vitamins. When a meat eater gets heart disease or high cholesterol, the first theing their doctor says is to lose the red meat.

If animals were "put here to be eaten", why the heck would the be made with a heart and brain, why not be another brainless plant with a different texture?

I guess the phrase "thou shalt not kill" is another pick and choose moral law.
Im not religous, its just a point.

I think it has become a trend as you called it. A lot of young teens do it because "punks are vegan". Which is a load of poo.
Or other such labels.

What worries me is these teens just cut out meat and think that's it. Reality is as you know you have to substatute other foods to make up for the protein you're not getting from meats.

no,it is a choice.

I 65 years old and have been Vegetarian for as long as I could remember. I do not care whtat people think of me when I mentiond the term Vegetarian and do not get insulted whatsoever. It is my own body and want to take care of it as long as I live. Thanks God I am very healthy and have not seen a doctor for any kind of sickness nor I take any medecine. So my friend join the club and enjoy your vegetarian meals.

ROBOTS ... always follow the "trends"
no matter what they may be .... it's no different than the clothing, hairstyles, and other trends ..... they come and go
just stay true to what you do

you see in hollywood most celebrities become vegetarian/vegan because they want to be skinny! Vegetarianism is not a trend its just how you feel i guess

It is trendy at the moment, but as long as you are doing it for the right reasons not just so you can say you are vegetarian and to be different, but as a way of life to avocate against animal cruellty then good for you. It's the people who call themselves vegetarians that eat seafood and poultry that bug me, I eat poultry and seafood and I understand I am not a vegetarian, and I am not about to come up with some new name for a nonexistant category of vegetarianism just so I can be trendy! Ahhh, anyways good for you for being an advocate for animal rights, and try not to let the trendy frauds that call themselves vegetarians that sneek bites of steak, or a chicken wing affect your pride in what you are doing. One day I might make that last leap towards being a vegetarian but it won't be for some trend, it will be for the animals, and for my personal health and life choice.

It need not be a trend-to be a vegetarian, teetotaler-non-smoker-non-drug addict-non-indulgent in unhygenic sex-all one does in the interest of one's own health. If somebody cheats they are cheating themselves. In Asian countries the list enumerated above were part of Religious Practices-like Hinduism-Buddhism-Jainism etc. There also the main thrust was any thing harmful for body, mind is a sin against the Soul--so majority followed for religious reasons. Now the Scientists are telling the red meat triggers Cardio/Cerebro vascular accidents-Vegetables/Herbs rich in fibre prevents colon cancer-"free radicals' in vegetables prevent Heart attacks/Srokes etc.Veg Salads does exactly opposite of what the red meat does- that is decrease VLDL/LDL and Increase HDL-the socalled "bad" and "good" cholesterol.Whatever many Asians followed forcenturies for religious reasons ,now the Scientists say are good.Where does the question of trend arises?

For some people it is a trend, for some people it is a lifestyle. People who are doing it only to lose weight and people who are veg because they think it is 'cool' and 'original' follow it like a trend. But people who are doing it for animals and want to improve their overall health forever, not just lose weight, follow a vegetarian lifestyle.
But, no matter what the reason for being veg, or how long you intend to be veg, I guess it's better than not being a vegetarian at all, even if you are only veg for short period of time. Still, I wish more people who went veg stuck with it.
Well, just my opinion. I hope I made sense, because sometimes I just type whatever comes to my head with no editing whatsoever, and it turns out as gibberish.

I don't think being a vegetarian is a trend, the people who do it to be cool are the ones who can't stick with it.(ie Fish/chicken eating vegetarians).

I like meat

yea but i do it beacause i like it

For some people, yes, it is a trend. Currently vegetarianism is somewhat popular, even if those individuals are really just in it for the label and still eat fish, chicken, etc.

I'm not going to waste my time arguing with those people, because honestly, there is no point. Besides, whatever reduction in meat consumption is occuring is good for the environment.

For me, it is a lifestyle. When I originally became vegetarian, my family treated it as a passing phase. After over two years as a vegetarian, at Thanksgiving, many people expressed their surprise that I "was still doing that" because their experiences with it were with the trend and not actual vegetarianism. Vegetarianism on a whole has been around since ancient times, so in itself it is not a trend, however, I would say that lately it has been receiving quite a bit of spotlight.

idk i just started being a vegetarian and don't know anyone else personally who is one

In some small cases it may be, but it's been around for a long time. In India with over 1 billion people, around 200-400 million or so are vegetarian. So they may have more vegetarians than the whole population of the US. Hinduism has been practiced before Christ, so they've had a long history of it.

I've read some of the celebrities say they do it because they believe in it or they want to be more healthy, some might just do it to follow other people, but so what. In LA almost everything can be a trend. In the end everyone does it for their own reasons.

Its not a trend for me. I haven't eaten meat since I was like 9. But yes, I think it's trendy these days, but who cares? Just stay true to yourself and everything will be ok.

Even if it were a trend(which it is not), it would be a healthy trend.

(BTW- I do not take issue too much with people claiming to be vegetarian or partial vegetarian..if they are putting information and ideas out there, then they are influencing others to be vegetarian.Becoming vegetarian or vegan is a process sometimes and habits built from childhood are difficult to break and sometimes take time.)

Here are SOME interesting health facts:

I have read where a monsanto hormone rGbh given to cows to increase milk production. rBGH milk is supercharged with high levels of abnormally potent IGF-1(insulin-like growth factor-1), up 10 times the levels in natural milk and over 10 times more potent. IGF-1 resists pasteurization, digestion by stomach enzymes, and is well absorbed across the intestinal wall. Increased levels of IGF-1 in blood is linked to breast, prostate and colon cancer. rGbh milk does not have to be labeled as such.

Milk is also linked to development of Juvenile diabetes (Type I)

IGF-1 (hormone found in rGbh milk) is being investigated as causing islet cells stimulation (and autoimmune response ) in both types of diabetes

Also osteoporosis is higher in milk drinking countries, because evidently the calcium in milk is not helpful in that regard, due to increased protein that leaches calcium from bones and low magnesium in milk that lowers absorption of calcium)..

Hear , hear about the meaties hassling you - they should be ashamed attacking us peace loving vegetarians. If you want to tell someone how great it is to eat the stuff ,do it in general food !
I'm a vegan , it is not a phrase and I won't grow out of it. I think that you have to be emotionally mature and aware about your planet to be any kind of vegetarian these days and well done to those of us who have made that leap . It is a lasting lifestyle change. I can't see my self ever waking up and thinking , "not killing animals for dinner - what planet was I on?"

Sounds like your brother and mine should meet up and eat their medium rare steak sandwiches together over a nice coronary!!!

yesh it's a trend, but you know don't worry about it
just do what you do and everything will be all right

no,
it is a healthy way of life. Da Vinci was a vegetarian, was he following a trend? Monks in alot of countries are vegans, so is the Dali Lama(sorry if I misspelled that). Would you call not be racist or not stealing a trend? Just because it's something that is gaining popularity, does not mean it's a trend. It is just a good thing that more people are begining to take part in.
