Interested in becoming vegitarian?!

Question:

Interested in becoming vegitarian?

I tried it for a couple of days and just felt HORRIBLE. How do I prevent this?

Also, I am from Texas (we LOVE our beef) so it is going to be hard to explain to people why I don't want to eat meat. I have a hard time explaining why it is OK for me to consume dairy and fish but not meat. In my heart I know I should give it all up but I have to take steps. Any ideas on something simple I could say if anyone asks why I no longer eat meat?

When I say I felt horrible, I mean I felt physically exhausted and had a horrible headache. Sort of like a hang over.

The three things you should remember when starting out on a vegetarian diet are:
1.Take it slowly. Don't rush into a simple diet of let's say, iceburg lettuce and peanut butter and jelly.
2.Make sure to take vitamins and supplements as you go.
3.Read up on proper nutrition.

First, think about how many days a week you eat meat, or how many times a day you eat it and reduce it by a couple meals or a couple portions. Substitute a meaty textured alternative such as seitan, portabella mushrooms, or tofu.

When you get interrogated for your non-meat choices, point to athletes such as bodybuilder Bill Pearl, Olympian Carl Lewis, and pro-basketball player Anthony Peeler and cofidently tell them, "These folks are vegetarian and seem to be doing just fine."

I recommend reading "Diet For A New America" by John Robbins. You'll come away from it feeling that you're not only helping yourself but also the environment, your fellow human beings, animals, and in general, the world we live in! It convinces you that this is the most logical lifestyle choice for a civilized society.

There's no real simple answer to the question of why someone is vegetarian because it's not a simple choice! But when done right, you'll be able to say, "Because I feel better and I don't miss the meat," and with time, you'll discover more rebuttals to the arguments of why you SHOULD eat meat.

So again, three step process: Take it slowly, take your vitamins and supplements, and read, read, read! Good luck!

No, because I love chicken and other meat.

People think you have to starve yourself and the reason you felt unhealthy is probably because you weren't eating enough. if you dont want to tell your parents or what/eve dont. Just tell them you dont like it anymore. Just eat plenty. Since you are not eating filling foods, you have to eat a little more. Good Luck.

HELL No I'm also from TEXAS and LOVE my steaks medium......But hey GOOD LUCK....Like they say you got to crawl before you walk...and like I said before GOOD LUCK...AND MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU....

You have to do some research on being a vegetarian. The first thing I would say to anyone interested in being a vegetarian is, not to stop eating meat without knowing suitible substitutes for the nutrients in meat. If you are eating a healthy, well- balanced vegetarian diet and you are feeling horrible, then I would have to say that you are doing something wrong.

Also, I don't live in texas, I live in philadelphia. And People here love thier meat too, lol... And my mom does not understand my desicion to become a vegan, and critsizes(i spelled that wrong i think, what happened to spell check!!lol) me every chance she gets, and so does most of my extended family. You just have to put it behind you.. either ignore it, or arm yourself with alot of knowledge on the subject, so when some one challenges you, you can defend your beliefs.
As long as you know that fish is meat, and that it is just as wrong to eat them as it is to eat steak, and you are taking step to cut out all meat... You don't have to explain yourself in that category(to me atleast).
Good Luck.

You probably have to ease into vegetarian food, because your body is used to having meat. If you replace meat more and more with fruits and vegetables (preferably raw, so you get all the nutrients and enzymes), you will probably not feel as horrible all at once. Do a little research to make sure you understand where the horrible feeling was coming from. I just got a book called the Raw Food Detox Diet by Natalia Rose, which proposes a mostly vegan diet. It is based on transitioning into a healthier diet and seems rather sensible, and so far, I would recommend it or something like it to get started.

There are so many reasons for becoming vegetarian. What's yours? It's not the same for everyone, which is why you should really think about why you are choosing a vegetarian diet. Once you have settled on an answer that satisfies you, I'm sure that other understanding people will be satisfied with the same answer. When it comes to people who simply will not understand, just take the focus off food when you are with them, and try to connect on other levels.

Either say ,"it is none of your business" or say because i fell like it.

My girlfriend and I tried the vegan diet for a while. We're both from Wisconsin and we're in San Diego now, so as soon as I quit eating cheese and meat and drinking milk, I got a ton of flak at work. They were like "so the cheesehead is giving up cheese" and "that's all you guys eat in Wisconsin."

I just told them that I was giving it a try for health reasons. Plus, there is tons of vegan or vegetarian food out there now, you don't have to just eat nuts and lettuce. I still drink soy milk, which people find pretty crazy, but I just tell them that it's good. People don't mind if you're a vegetarian, as long as you're not criticizing what they are eating.

I eat meat. God created meat so we could eat it. I wouldnt encourage you to become a vegetarian so i hav a few advice. Instead of becoming a full veggy freak you can eat healthier meats and stay away from pork lik i do. or if u wanna be the full vegetarian then take it step by step. Each day eat less and less meat and eat more vegetables or tofu or wateva so you wont go into shock. if ppl find something wrong with it just tell them its your lifestyle and i dont complain about how you live. Im doin it for health reasons

I commend you for taking that step on becoming a vegetarian. Depending on the person and what their reasons are, it can be a hard thing to do and a difficult transition.

First, don't rush it. If your body is so used to consuming meat, it's not gonna feel right if it just stops receiving the meat. I would recommend just cutting it out completely, but I understand that you felt physically exhausted. In that case, cut it out slowly. Decrease your intake and make sure that you replace the lack of meat with protein from other sources, such as legumes, nuts, beans and definitely tofu.

Second, this is your life and you live it the way you want to live it! I have a hard time dealing with narrow-minded people, including family and friends, who tell me that I'm going to be malnutritioned and that I'm starving my son. I've been labeled "weird" and have been ridiculed for refusing chicken. To this day, it still bugs me, but all I can do is hope and pray that someday they'll see the damage they are doing to themselves, the animals, and the environment by continuing to consume meat. Just brush it off...

Do your research so you can defend your beliefs when questioned. Often, people can be misinformed because they've been led to believe that meat is an essential part of a very nutritious diet when in fact, meat is linked to saturated fat and contributes to debilitating diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, etc.

Good luck!! :o)

Meat sucks
I don't know why u feel horrible but tell those meat eaters to **** OFF AND DIE.

Your body is just going thru a change if you were a meat eater all of your life and then make some changes your body is going to notice.

You need to ease yourself into your new eating lifestyle. My husband was vegetarian when I met him and he has been for 15 years now. I am 95% vegetarian I still occasionally eat chicken (no red meat).

I read this book to help me understand what it's all about to be a vegetarian and also how to answer questions other people have about why I choose not to eat meat.

Remember your body is just going thru a change and it will take time to adjust. I would start taking a multi vitamin that way you make sure you are getting enough nutrients

Here is the book I read - Vegetarianism for Dummies.

Good Luck to you!

I lived in Houston for 23 years and it was very hard to consider vegetarianism there, plus I had no support from my family.
The bad feelings you had for the first few days were probably a result of detoxing and that can take 2-3 weeks to complete.
If you stick with it, I promise you will feel so good in about 6 weeks, you will never go back to eating meat.
I have been veg for 3 months now and it is the best thing I have ever done for my health--not easy, but worth it! I have a serious, incurable auto-immune disease and my body is starting to heal in ways I never believed it would.
Read up on what the meat processors do to the meat in the supermarkets, and that will give you the will not to eat it, and the message to give to any folks who question you.
Good luck

Honey, if you are eating fish, you are eating meat.
