Dun dun dun..?!

Question:

Dun dun dun..?

I'm a vegetarian, And I've always been a little paranoid about eating regular eggs. We recently got some cage free eggs, Which I was all excited cause finally I wouldn't have to be so paranoid. Buuuuut, And heres where the "Dun dun dun" comes in, I've been hearing that the whole "Cage Free Eggs" Are a scam, Which has me a little uneasy. Does anybody have an opinion on this?

In order for the egg to actually be considered a "Little Baby Chicken" The egg must be fertilized, Eggs bought from local stores are not fertilized o.O The only reason I ask is the concern for the treatmeant of the actual chickens who have the eggs.

Cage free is a toughie... maybe farmers do let their chickens out... but for how long? Is this period of time healthy enough for the chicken to produce a healthy egg?

"Every report from a commercial cage-free farm is the same: Pathetic and diseased animals are crammed by the tens of thousands into ammonia-laden sheds, where they will live mired in their own filth for years until they're finally sent to the slaughter."

"Reports from people who have visited free-range egg farms indicate that conditions are no different in these systems. While free-range and organic egg farms are technically supposed to give birds outdoor access, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has decided that “they may be temporarily confined” for “reasons of health, safety, the animal's stage of production or to protect soil or water quality.”

Guess cage free isn't all that it's cracked up to be...

Hope this helps!!

As far as I know it's illegal to print "cage free" if that is not the case - so you should be safe eating the eggs. You are doing the right thing.

I always go with my gut instinct. If I think something isn't all it's cracked up to be, such as the eggs in question, I wouldn't use them. I'm afraid I have no knowledge of "cage free eggs", so I would just say If you are uncomfortable, don't use them.

For something to be labeled cage free, free range, or organic, it has to follow some specific rules, that's all that means.
In the case of cage free, all this means is that for the eggs to be labeled cage free eggs the birds must not be kept in a cage. Sounds nice?... well cage free dosn't mean cruelty free.
They cut off the hens beaks and shove them in a shed... thats it.
Same with Free range, all this means pretty much is that the animals are to be allowed a certian amount of time outside.
But the meat, dairy and egg industrys care about one thing, and one thing only... MONEY. Don't forget that. So if it is not cost effective then It is not "good" for the company.
They use the cheapest means of housing, feeding, and killing these animals, and it is not in the best interest of the animal.
All I am saying is that there is this fad gowing on... Organic, natural, free range, cage free, products appeal to today's market... so these companies do what is efficient for themselves, and they follow the rules by doing the minimum in order to label their food "animal friendly"

well if you go to youtube and google "alton brown fried turkey 1/3" you will find a video and if you play it into about 2 1/2 mins he discusses the lack of definition of "free range"...sorry I tried to add the link and YA is not letting me add it..not sure why..

if you eat eggs your not a vegetarian, your still killing little baby chickens!

Most of the time, cage free isn't as great as it sounds. I think in order for them to legally print cage free on the eggs, the chickens have a little more of an open area than chickens who produce regular eggs. I think a lot of them still even get their beaks cut off.

I personally wouldn't feel comfortable eating them. But it's your choice.

i don't like to eat eggs, because it's baby chicken
i'm pretty sure it's a scam based on meat indistury lies about everthing

the whole "orgainic" thing is a fake also, it is not any healther then regular stuff.

A few Chicken Farms that raised there chickens mainly to sell eggs have been sued for Advertising there Eggs from chickens to be cage free.. just cause some Cages where found in their Chicken coop. They couldn't prove that there chickens were never in the cage. One of them eggs were found in the cage.. they could've fallen in from the above partial floor! As long as the chickens have enough area to run around in it doesn't matter if they are temporarily in a cage is my Opinion. It matters though if they never get out of the cage that would be cruel!
