i want to remind some of you that most sugar, except for certain brands, is processed using animal bone char, so yes you are not eating meat, but it is almost on the same level as not eating geletin

I'm a vegetarian, and while I'd prefer to use the kind not processed on bone char, I've yet to find it in my area. Plus, it would completely limit my use of any sort of pre-made, packaged foods - everything from candy bars to pop to soups to packaged rice & noodles. Almost everything has at least SOME sugar in it, and almost all of it is refined using bone char. So... it's just a battle I've chosen not to fight. I'm sure I'm using animal products in many aspects of my life without knowing it. I think in today's society it would be almost impossible (if not completely impossible) to be COMPLETELY vegan, even when one tries their hardest.

Processed food of any kind are not good for you. If your hard core you'll have to go for "sugar in the raw."

I don't eat anything that comes as a result of an animal or causes the death of an animal. Thus, i don't eat bone char sugar, but i am sure others do. I agree with David about processed foods.

The meat in sugar comes from the old fertilizer's, now you do the other guessing.

dear cliff,
sugar is good. and.so is meat...and chocolate and alcohol.......why are you depriving yourself...Life is short;;;;;;eat dessert first !

i think is okay to sugar because they can't eat meat not bone

I think that you are seriously taking it too far. Sugar?? Come on now.

yes because it comes from a plant and not an animal but I would not eat cake because it has eggs milk ya know and there is a big difference between vegan and vegetarian the first does not eat ANYTHING that comes from animals and vegetarians just don't eat meat

Yes it is definitely okay to eat sugar. My religion is against of eating non veg but we still eat sugar.

That isn't true I asked my dad who worked in somr kind of sugar factory

I don't think the labels of vegan/vegetarian need to be completely black & white. It would be ideal if everyone stopped using all products that could be derived from animals, but then that would also exclude a lot of widely-used items like rubber and steel. So totally freeing animals from being exploited is just not going to happen anytime soon, if ever.

The best bet is to find a balance between lowering the suffering while still making veganism a viable way of life - this will encourage others to do it. If more and more people stop using the "main" products like meat, eggs, and dairy, that may, in turn, reduce the use of those other industry by-products.

If we are all very strict about being "pure" vegans, it will turn others off of trying it themselves.

Personally speaking, I will avoid bone char sugar whenever feasible (eg., I won't buy a bag of it), but I won't put up a stink about trying to find out exactly what kind of sugar is in my food, especially if I'm in the company of others.

It depends on each person's conscience.
I personally don't eat non-vegan sugar or
artificial sweeteners.

Refined sugars are really unhealthy and they
refine, crush and make sugar smaller so that
it will be cheaper and so that you can and
will use more of it. Have you ever noticed that
it takes 4 teaspoons of refined sugar to sweeten
what artificial sweetener does. It's better to use
a natural sugar such as: beet sugar,
"sugar in the raw," stevia, succanat, agave nectar,
etc.

Also, artificial sweeteners are known for staying
stuck in people's organs and causing maladies.
Better to just go natural.

I'm not a 'hard core' vegetarian, but I try my best to avoid any product made from an animal. Sugar, however, is not something I've tackled just yet... But to be honest, it technically wouldn't be okay to eat sugar made that way if you are 'living the law' of vegetarianism.

This is just going too too too far! Just silly.

I'd say, avoid processed sugar, especially white sugar.

Anything that requires the death of an animal isn't fine by me. In any case, I'm a non-sugar consumer.

I am a vegetarian and I only eat the vegan friendly sugar. I don't want to eat the other kind because an animal had to die for it and that's against my believes.
