Has anyone else become DEPRESSED after becoming VEGETARIAN?
Since switching to a vegetarian diet I've noticed my mood has gone downhill. I found giving up my favorite foods to be quite depressing in and of itself, but I'm beginning to wonder if there is an actual physical connection between vegetarianism and depression as I've noticed similar mood changes in my daughter.

Unless you are eating a bunch of crappy processed stuff I doubt your diet is the factor here.
I know I personally felt a great deal of satisfaction and peace from becoming vegetarian and even more so when going Vegan. I'm pretty sure my mood has never been better.

i would be depressed if i was one
You might miss the meats and flesh you had before, but I found that really researching and preparing interesting vegetables, beans and grains dishes, among others, really helped me through those times.
But for the physical issues, you might not be eating enough variety of foods, or those with the right balance of nutrients to supplement what you lost by eating meats. For that, since both you and your daughter are experiencing the symptoms, I would go to a nutritionist or doctor and have some labs done to test the levels in your blood to make sure you are still getting what you need to be healthy, and then adjust your diet if you are not.
Vitamins and such can be good for the body, but what we gain from food intake can't compare. If you've gone the vegetarian way, I would also say visit a homoepathic doctor or herbalist which can show you a more natural ways than minerals to help certain conditions.
Your body is going through withdrawls. You will steady out after a week or so. Make sure are taking the proper suplements for your diet. Lacking in certain vits and mins will also do it.
No. I actually feel much better!
I had to change my diet and cut out sugars (which includes white breads, potatoes, etc...) and for the first two weeks I was so depressed and mean. I found that my body was withdrawing from the sugar I was so used to eating. Also, make sure that you are sustaining a healthy level of protein since most Americans receive protein from meat. Being a vegetarian doesn't just mean not eating meat- make sure you are keeping a healthy balance in your diet otherwise you can become sick!
I can't say what is going on with you but,
Since I have become a vegan I have been very healthy.
I noticed a drastic difference in my mood, I have become noticeably less angry and depressed.
But when I was an Ova- Lacto vegetarian(Meaning I ate dairy and eggs) I used to feel very lethargic, and depressed, but I am guessing that is because I was eating processed, food that had very low nutritional value. I ate a lot of cheese and junk.
Since I have been a vegan I feel much better, I think you are just not eating right. Keep in mind if you want to be a vegetarian, you can't just give up meat, you have to find substitutes for the nutrients you are no longer getting from meat.
Good luck though and stick with it.
There is a link, but it comes from a lack of certain nutrients, are you Vegitarian (also eats eggs/fish), or Vegan (Veggies only), because if you eat fish Tuna will help raise your spirits, if not take a fish oil suppliment (fairly large gelcap golden in color usually). Without a full understanding of your diet it is irresponsible though for anyone (myself included) to give more than a basic answer to your question.
Peace
Michael
no
I have, but I was also depressed before too, so... but usually depression is often linked to low blood sugar. Perhaps you are eating too much food that gives you blood sugar highs and lows. Otherwise, it was not my diet that caused my depression, but my situation in life in general. But, whenever I feel very low, bummed out, and grumpy.. it's usually a long while after eating something sugary. Our daughter that has been raised a healthy vegan, we found that she reacts that same to white flour as to sugar -- it's really no different... she gets that sugar high, freaks out, then gets all cranky and crying, running around and all that kind of child tantrum stuff. So, I'm sure it's the same for adults too, it's just not as obvious.
no I actually feel better and I am going on 2 months!!
I don't know, I was depressed a little bit in the beginning too but now I've been a vegetarian for a couple of years and my mood is getting better and better. Be strong and hope it works out for you
