Lacto- Ovo-Vegatarian help?!

Question:

Lacto- Ovo-Vegatarian help?

My dad doesn't like me being a vegetarian. I have a pretty much balanced diet, except I need more protien. How can I add more protien to my diet while still sticking to my lacto- ov- ways?

Answers:
I have been a Lacto-Ovo Veggy for over 20 years and I have been sick 5 times in 20 years! This includes flu and colds.
I eat cottage cheese, all kinds of cheeses in fact, some soy protein products, and the line of products from Boca and Morningstar Farms. They make things with lots of protein in them, derived from plants. They are in the freezer section of the supermarkets.
Good luck!

beans beans and more beans

Lacto-ovo is good. Eat lots of beans and lowfat/fatfree cheese and soy products.

include more soy, legumes, and eggs.

Well, if you're lacto-ovo, you can get a lot of protein from eggs. If you're worried about fat/cholesterol, eat the egg whites. Try making egg white omlets. Also try using extra firm tofu as a substitute for meat. It contains a ton of protein, and it's kind of flavorless, and you can use it in a lot of the same ways that you can use meat. I really like marinating it in teryaki and grilling it. Also, beans are a great way to add protein. If you still have problems with protein, then try taking a supplement.

eggs are the perfect protien, also soy is a good source of protien.

If you're already taking sufficient milk and dairy products, and eggs, it's really enough protein for yourself. However, I do understand your Dad's concern, as many vegetarians do tend to have limited knowledge of a well-balanced vegetarian diet, and overdose on carbs as a result, leading to blood sugar problems and obesity.

Otherwise, try to include more plant protein sources into your diet. Excellent plant protein sources are soy and soy products like soya bean milk and beancurds, beans, peas, and nuts.

Eggs, Quorn products, soy and pulses.

eat cheeses, milk products, eggs, nuts, seeds, soy products,... Show him facts how vegetarians don't need to be concerned about protein (e.g. book Becoming vegetarian)

Hi Sarah,

Who says you need more protien ?

Its often somethnig meat-eaters say, but they have no evidence for it.

Do you feel ill, has the doc said so ?

I've been lacto-ovo for 28 years and am never ill, i also run an arable farm so am used to manual work - no worries about energy, vitamins nor protien as far as i can tell.

When was an egg or even dairy produce for that matter considered a vegetable?
To call oneself any kind of 'blah-blah-vegetarian' and eat these kinds of animal products is nonsense!
By all means chose to eat whatever you want, but don't lie to yourself. If you eat eggs then you eat what chickens eat, including bugs and worms. Eggs are chicken abortions, plain and simple. Don't delude yourself that you're veggie if you eat eggs. Great sources of fun protein are veggie burgers and bangers.

Unless you are young and still growing, you don't need to consider protein in your diet at all. All foods have proteins in them. Pound for pound nuts and pulses have more protein that any meat or dairy products. Too much protein will also make you big bodied.
Most cheeses are made with 'rennet' which is an animal product, but not the soft cheeses and it is now possible to get hard cheese made with non-animal 'rennet'.
Eggs are cholesterol bombs waiting to go off many years later and could kill you via heart disease etc..
If your Dad really loves you he doesn't want you to die like that does he?

You diet is OK protein wise because you eat eggs. But make sure that you have organic milk rather that the mass produced one because the non organic if coming from cows injected with growth hormone given to them to double milk production is lethal in the long run. The same goes for the eggs, say no to battery chicken eggs. However for as good as your diet is the healthiest and most healing food in this planet is blue fish such as herrings, mackrel and sardines which are extremely rich on Omega 3 and good cholesterol. If you don't mind eating a bit of it some times even if only for health purposes you can please your father. Grilled sardines are particularly nice with a squeeze of lemon juice on. Chick peas are a good and tasty source of protein that don't have the side effect of producing intestinal gasses like some beans.
