Thinking of being a vegetarian?!

Question:

Thinking of being a vegetarian?

I saw this commercial on MTV, and it was for this website called tryveg.com. I went to the website, and I was shocked and upset at what people do to animals. (If you want to know what I'm talking about go to tryveg.com). I then thought about going on a vegetarian diet to see how it is like to be one. I care about animals, and would hope to become a veterinarian when I get older (I'm 14 yrs. old). Can someone tell me what it's like to be one, and what you eat?

P.S. Sometimes I eat sandwiches, and I want to substitute it for something else. Help

Answers:
Sure. I have been a vegetarian for over a year now. I will be honest with you by saying that it is not an easy adjustment. However, I think it is well worth it because 1.) it is healthier for your body and 2.) your saving animals and preventing them for being harmed.
The reason I became a vegetarian was mainly because it is a healthier way of eating. I never was much of a meat eater. I went vegetarian in two steps. The first was that I cut out all meats except for fish (chicken, beef, pork, turkey, etc). I still ate fish for a while, but now I do not eat any meat of any kind. The key to succeeding is finding protein substitutes that are meat-free and to finding a balanced diet no matter what. Once you go vegetarian, here are some foods that I recommend eating.
-LOTS of veggies and fruits
-Whole grain breads
-Get your protein from nuts (peanut butter is great), beans, and dark leaf vegetables (spinach). Also, I eat soy products sometimes (I dont eat them lots) but the brand and item I get is Morningstar chicken patties. They are actually very good.
-Most vegetarians still eat some dairy, however I dont eat eggs. Since you are a teenager I recommend you making sure that you get calcium (you can also get calcium from non-dairy sources such as spinach and broccoli)
-For sandwiches, try tomato and swiss on whole grain bread...I love that one!
Once you are used to it you will love the way you feel and would feel really awkward even thinking about eating meat.....I know I do :)

I am a vegetarian and a nutritionist.

You can try it but keep in mind, we are omnivores. (We eat both plants and animals but and our digestive systems are geared towards digesting meats & proteins) Since you’re a in your early teenage years, you’ll need the nutrients provided in meats. But, if you want to be healthy, stay away from junk eat fruits and veggies, eat in moderation, and exercise.

one person not eating meat will not stop people from treating animals cruelly

Being vegetraian is healthy... yet keeps your young and disease free, its all individual choice. As for myself I am not a big meat eater and I dont really prefer meat... I hardly eat meat... I go compeltly veggetraian in Summer - its great flush out digestive systme... there's many recepie can be made and protein can be taken from so many things such as soya product ; tofu , lentils..etc. if you need more info let me know :)

For sandwiches there are fake meat slices. Also, hummus, which is made of chic peas. There's always peanut butter and jelly!

i am 15 years old.
i went vegetarian when i was 13.
the first month was the hardest,
because no one suporrted me,
they thought it was something i would drop.
but after being meatfree for about 2 years,
i could never go back to eating flesh.
if youre not convinced with the stuff you see on goveg.com
type in "Peta reasons to become a vegetarian"
there are like graphic pictures,
but they help get the point across.
its not hard to be a vegetarian,
with your parents help its easier.
i eat a brand called morningstar.
they sell these fake chiken nuggets that are amazing!
bocca burgers are also really good!
theyre the most popular vegetarian food.
good luck though hun!
its really hard when you go to mcdonalds,
but you;ll get used to it after a while!
trust me, its the right thing to do =]

I'm a vegetarian and I love it. I feel much better about myself knowing that I'm preventing the suffering and death of over 100 animals every year, which means I've now saved around 550 animals. I would hate to know that I'm contributing to violence in the world every time I sat down to eat a meal.

The idea that vegetarians have very little to eat is ridiculous. I have discovered a huge array of foods that I never would have found otherwise. Basically, I eat anything I want. There are plenty of substitutes for meat (eg. vegetarian sausages, hotdogs, chicken schnitzels, chicken nuggets, burger patties, bacon, ham, the list just goes on). If you want nachos, you can have beans instead of meat and if they're in a good sauce, they taste great. Especially refried beans mixed with salsa, in the Mexican section of the supermarket. If you want a kebab, get a falafel. If you want a burger, have a veggie burger. Whatever you want, you can have. Real meat only tastes the way it does because of added flavouring, herbs, sauces etc.

I would recommend discussing it with a nutritionist. They can assess your needs and provide professional advice on how to maintain a healthy vegetarian diet. They will not, under any circumstances, tell you that a vegetarian diet is unhealthy. In fact, on the contrary, I had a nutritionist tell me that "dairy isn't that great for us" anyway. They can also provide you with easy and healthy vegetarian recipes and let you know about your options.

Being vegetarian is one of the best choices you can make. I hope it works out for you.

most people dont become vegetarians until they are older (meaning out of mamas house) but thats wher we have something in common. Im thirteen years old and have been a vegetaria since i was 11...still eating out of mamas kitchen makes it automaticly much more difficult to be a vegetarian if whoever cooks in your family isnt vegetarian, as happened in my case. However i got lucky ((i love you mom)) and my mom always makes sure that there is someting for me to eat too...sometimes its nothing more than salad but even though im the only veg in the family, she sometimes makes soy burgers, soy chillie and whatnot ((again, i love you mom)). However for some people, including several friends of mine, it wasnt that easy for them, and they had to start cooking for themselves...if your serious abut your cause than thats probobly what you will end up doing, but that makes it odviously harder if you have been used to otherwise for the rest of your life.
""Can someone tell me what tis like to be one"" Being vegetarian changed my point of view on a lot of things...I love being a vegetarian and wouldnt give it up for the world. When i first became a vegetarian i lost about 15 pounds, and i automaticly became felt much healthier than i did before, and i became much more active...i dont know if that was a coinsidence or not but i did. However, you do have to watch your health ane make sure that you get a lot of iron and protein in your diet. Yesterday i was soposed to get my wisdome teeth pulled but when i got my blood tests back it turned out that i am anemic (iron deficiency) and i cant get them pulled until i get that taken care of. One of the most common signes of anemia is chewing ice, so if you start doing this after becoming a veg than look into that

""what do you eat?"" i am an ovo lacto vegetarian meaning tat i eat eggs and milk. i would like to be a vegan accept i couldnt cook if my life depended on it and my mom wont cook for a vegan.

anyway, good luck

You don't have to wait until you get older!! I've been veg since i was 14 and i'm 25 now. You can get vegetarian lunch meat at walmart by the fruit. It's made by yves. There is also veggie chickn nuggets and patties and they taste great! I would also suggest trying peta's website. They have one for teens and they will mail you a free veggie starter kit with info you could use to convince your parents to let you be veg. My children ages 5 and 3 have been veg since they were born. They have only had meat once or twice (their dad fed it to them) and neither one liked it and it made them sick to the point they vomited. Peanut butter sandwiches are great for a replacement protein. There are also vegetarian baked beans and dried beans. For dried beans, throw them in a crock pot (rince them first) with water to cover them. Add garlic and pepper and cook them all day on high adding water when it gets low. This is a great bean soup! You can also use vegetable broth instead of water. They're high in protein and fiber!!!!Good for you! Stay strong and stand up for what you believe in!!!!!

You should try to find anything you can in the library about it. Also, I would suggest learning to make your own food so at least if you need to you can. You will also eat better that way. Making pastas, rice, and stir frys are quite easy.
