Answers:
Lactose intolerance is a completely natural thing. It happens to every single mammal on the planet, including humans. When you are born, you produce an enzyme that breaks down your mother's milk (there are also more enzymes in the milk too -- heat kills enzymes by the way). When the breast feeding is done at say, age 3 or 4 or whenever, there is no more need for this enzyme, so slowly the body stops producing it, and then stops completely. Thus, lactose intolerance starts. Grown humans do not need milk, then end. There are billions of people in Asian that never have any other milk than their mother's breast milk. Dairy is a non-food in most places for a reason. But if you continue to consume milk, say in the form of cow's milk, this enzyme will continue to be stimulated into production. Such people usually consume less and less dairy as they get older, replacing milk with tea or coffee, replacing cream with non-dairy creamer, etc. The occasional ice-cream or whatever may digest fine, but if they suddenly drink a large glass of milk or some such thing, they may experience digestive problems because they have gone over their limit since their enzyme production is now very low and not able to handle large amounts. I never knew this until this Russian guy told me. He thought I was really stupid/ignorant since in Russia such things are common knowledge. As the other poster suggested, you might be able to slowly eat more and more dairy, but apparently the enzyme production does not increase, only decreases, but perhaps it can come back into full production again if you haven't gone too far in the opposite direstion. One of my best friends was not big on diary, and by the time he was in his late teens, he could only eat a small amount. Usually fermented dairy (such as yogurt) will digest more easily as there are lots of live enzymes in there, unlike milk which is boiled and dead. But with soy yogurt being so good these days... Solgurt is really the best alternative if anyone is interested. http://www.solcuisine.com/products/sol_s...

Gas, sharp stomach pains, and diarreah could be a sign.

My husband is lactose intolerant and he gets bad cramping right after eating dairy products. Usually accompanied by a trip (sometimes more than one) to the bathroom. If you notice it always happens about 1/2 hour after you eat dairy - then it likely is that. You can try lactose free milk, or Lactaid chewables which help your body digest the dairy products without the stomach upset.

everytime i drink milk i puke...but i just keep drinking it

Your lactose intolerant! It sucks buddy. Welcome to my world. lol. Cheese & sour cream are the worst for me!

I used to get stomach upset and had to use the toilet within half an hour of drinking milk. But as I drank everyday somehow my body has gotten use to it and I no longer have this problem. My cousin can't tolerate any dairy product, even ice cream will have him running to toilet... so I guess tummy upset is a very good indication of lactose intolerant!
