Has anyone used the VitaMix? Is it really better than a good blender?
My husband & I have been ovo-lacto vegetarians for a while now (a little over a year) and I would like to go vegan. I have been getting brochures from Vita-Mix and I'm having a really hard time justifying spending $500 on what seems to be a blender. I have a good blender that makes smoothies well. The Vita-Mix says that it breaks down the cells. Is this really possible? And how can it make both Hot soup and Frozen treats? I'd like to hear about anyones experience with the Vita-Mix...good or bad.

The vitamix is great. It grinds small items like sesame seeds into tahini and can puree your sock if you like. I have a lesser quality blender, and really wish I would have splurged. BTW- check out all vendors online, including discountjuicers.com and see if you can get it cheaper. Costco at times also has the vitamix for much less than 500 dollars.
It's incredible. My sister in law has one. Yes, I believe it does everything it says it can.
She swears by it. I've used them before in institutional cooking. They are pretty incredible.
I just wish I could afford one.
Oh, and you THINK your blender makes smoothies well. Just see how smooth the vitamix chops the ice!!
Vita-Mix blenders have a strong motor and easily blend what you put in. I've made smoothies in it very easily.
I've got a Vita Mix, it's awesome, but get the stainless steel one, not the crap plastic ones they are trying to pawn off these days. No thanks to plastic. Basically the vita mix is a skillsaw motor attached to a blender. So, that means, you won't burn it out like all those other crap blenders as it is a magnetic motor, not a dynamo motor. buy a $20 mixer and it has troubles with anything thicker than water. What we don't like: that stupid spout -- we took it off because it's really weird and useless for us and it hard to clean (have to get the hole filled though). And the lid with the plunger hole on top, no thanks, that's just silly. Otherwise, it's great. There are even older ones that are stainless with no 'fancy' lids our side spouts. Just look on craig'slist or the buy&sell and you'll find one like we did for about $100 or less.
It's the best blender out there. Also, remember, you get what you pay for. After burning out the motor on a few cheaper blenders, you quickly realize that you should have made the 'wise' purchase to begin with...
