Is the banana (fruit) as nutricious as some people claim it to be?
Once watching tv. The owner of a banana plantation made this comment. Imagine a person stranded in an isolated island The only plant in the island is an apple tree. He said that the person will perish in a couple of month of malnutrition. The same will apply for any other fruit. Except bananas. He said that bananas are a complete meal.
Is it true? or just the pitch of a saleman
Answers:
He's wrong. It takes more than two months to perish of malnutrition. It was only on long voyages that sailors perished from scurvy, for example.
You might die from starvation after you had eaten all the apples off the tree, but the same might be said of a single banana plant.
A banana may be a "complete meal" in the sense that you can eat a banana for breakfast or lunch, but it does not supply all necessary nutrients. It is too low in protein, fat, and a number of vitamins and mineral to sustain a person long-term.
I would trust the owner of a banana plantation for advice on how to grow bananas, but not nutrition.

I would take his statement with a grain of salt but bananas are the first food of choice for those who are ill and have a delicate stomach.
Yes, it gives you great energy.
I have seen tennis players that every half hour they bite a banana. I think it is great energy and also not fat.
They are very high in potassium, so if you were stranded on an island and had the choice of only eatting bananas or apples then yes you would live longer if you chose the banana. I have heard of a few cases of anorexic people dying from depletion of potasium, if they had just eatten a banana hear and there they might have lived longer : (
I dont buy his theory that one would perish from malnutrition just living on apples, but I do think bananas are a perfect food. Full of protein, potassium, dense nutrients and minerals. And, they have their own convenient carrying case!
