What are vegetarian capsules and how are they different to other capsules?!

Question:

What are vegetarian capsules and how are they different to other capsules?

I just heard of them online and I want to help the animals, but I don't know what they are. Please represent a global view- tell me the down sides of them too if you can. :-) 10 points for the best answer!

most medications and vitamin supplements are bound with lactose, which is from milk. Sometimes, other animal ingredients are used-particularly if its a coated tables. Many also contain gelatine (jello), which is made from boiled skins, bones, ligaments and tendons of slaughtered cows and pigs. Vegetarian capsules are usually made from soybean, but can be from any other plant source as well. You can purchase empty capsules to fill with your own herbs in most health food stores

they do not contain any animal byparts. a lot of prescripton drugs and stuff have little chemicals that come from animals, so vegetarian capsules would have none at all.

They are made with all vegetable product rather than the hooves of animals (that is where gelatin comes from.)

Vegetable source is a renewable source of food, vegetarians can use it. And there is no chance of mad cow disease.
...
In this day of Mad Cow Disease and its human variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, eating an animal product is something like playing roulette.

I have been using vegetarian capsules for many years because of my concerns with gelatin products, often made from by-products of the meat packing and hide tanning industries: pigskin and other hides and/or bone and connective tissues. Vegetarian capsules are made from cellulose which is also better in terms of its bioavailability. The risk of disease is less and because of this, no preservatives are necessary. In contrast, bacterial and fungal growth are real possibilities with gelatin capsules,

There aren't any downsides. They're just made without using gelatin, since most aspirin capsules are made with gelatin(boiled animal bones, skins, ligaments).

well normally capsules are made of gelatin which obviously isnt veg*n friendly so vegetarian capsules would have no animal by products in it. if you want just the empty capsules (i have no clue what you would do with them :)) you can go here: http://www.capsuline.com/

they would be used for medications. so i think you would want to find companies that used these capsules instead of regular ones (like cold medicines) easy mistake. cheers

edit:
i think i misunderstood your ? and took it as you didnt know what capsules were for! how dumb of me, sorry. if you go to http://www.naturalnirvana.com/ and look under vegan health and herbal treatments there are vegan medications.

There are different gelatin capsules that are vegetarian type some are made from vegetable oils, some from onion skins, some from the locust bean gum plant. Some are made from milk by products.. it's vegetarian cause no animal was killed for it to be made!
