What is the vegetable 'gem' and how do you cook it?!

Question:

What is the vegetable 'gem' and how do you cook it?

Answers:
I can think of:

Little Gem lettuce - no need to cook, just eat it as is in a salad

Gem squash - cook as any other squash, ie roast or chop it up & include in a stew.

I'm not sure if you are talking about the gem that we know in South Africa. If it is a green ( sometimes yellow) round vegetable, then we are. What we do here is: Poke a few holes in it skin, all the way through, place in a pot of water, and cook for about 20 minutes. Once cool,Discard the pips, scoop the flesh out, and add loads of butter ( or whatever you use), salt and pepper and mash together. I find it easier to cut them in half when raw, place upside down in a microwave proof dish, cover and cook on high for about 10 minutes. They come out a lot drier this way. When doing them whole, be careful to pierce the skin enough, or they COULD explode. I hope we have been talking of the same thing, and that this info helps. By the way, they are really good!
