Women tend to be more sensitive, so the ethical argument has more appeal to the.
Women tend to be more concerned with weight loss, and many use vegetarianism as a way to lose weight.
Marketing is a huge part, meat is considered macho, and there is a perception that male vegetarians are homosexual. (Which is pure bs.)
If you are a heterosexual male and vegan, the ratio works in your favor. Lots of vegetarian women complain that they can't find vegetarian guys, so you have the opportunity to step in and be their vegan knight in shining armor.
Because society, through advertising and social mores, has brainwashed men into thinking eating meat equals being manly. Also, females are probably more sympathetic to animal life.
it goes back to the cavemen days where men were hunters and girl were the nesters
yeah, I know... I am a vegan and my boyfriend is a meat eater. When I ask him why he doesn't care about animals, his response is, " It's not that I don't care, It's just that there are alot of other sh!ty things that are going on in the world right now."
So I guess that women generally are just more sympathetic to the cute little animals. And men just don't want to give up their meat :)
(I am making a generalization, I am not saying any of the crap I say actually means anything :)
Beats me. I won't daye women that don't "eat meat", if ya know what I mean.
It's absolutely OK for a guy to be a vegetarian. I don't suggest being a vegan unless you're very conscious of the nutrients you'll need to supplement through vitamins and other foods (you should consult a doctor about that). Vegetarianism, however, is perfectly healthy and is socially acceptable in men. Men are just as capable as being animal-lovers as women. I don't think I could date a guy who ate meat (I have in the past and it grossed me out).
It's OK for anyone to be a vegan. Its more than OK, it's the only moral option. Guys can have more trouble seeing that , though.
I agree with the idea that women are usually more sensitive. But I think the idea that there are more female veg's is just a stereotype like "all veg's are deathly skinny". It's just a general idea. I'm sure there are plenty of men who are vegetarians as well.
I totally agree with those who say that the reason is this stupid social image of meat being macho. I also think that because of this, men who are vegetarian or vegan are less likely to shout it from the rooftops than women. So there might be more than you think. There is absolutely no reason for any human being living in a modern society to consume meat. Regardless of gender or age.
Aladdin Sane, you said your bf said: "It's not that I don't care, It's just that there are alot of other sh!ty things that are going on in the world right now." Well ask him what exactly he's doing about those other things and how exactly going vegetarian or even vegan is supposed to make them worse. In fact it would contribute to making them better. Global warming: raising animals for food uses far more energy and water than plant-based foods and contributes more carbon emissions as well as needing more land and therefore more trees get chopped down. Human famine: it takes a lot of grain to make a little meat, by giving up meat there is more food to go around. If he really does care, cutting out (or at least cutting down) his intake of animal products is one of the best things he can do to make the world a better place for humans and non-humans alike.
I didn't know that.
Idk, maybe it's the stereo typed way of "women re more caring men are more barbaric"
I hate stereo types
most of my good friends are guys and most of them are vegans/vegetarians
maybe guys feel the need to eat meat to look 'manly' but i wish more guys were vegan! yea its great that you are vegan. girls will love it :)
My husband, son and I are vegetarian, leaning vegan. I know several other vegetarian men. It will become more and more normal the see vegetarians as people become aware of factory farms from handouts distributed in the thousands on college campuses. www.veganoutreach.org.
I've never seen reliable data that breaks down vegetarians by sex but I'm fairly sure that this is a MYTH. I HAVE seen data that peta membership is largely female and this may be where the myth came from but I have another idea about the start of this myth (it came about from something else I've been researching).
The idea that most vegheads are female seems to have started in the '90s. This is the same time period when the MYTH started that there are some vegetarians that eat dead animals (fish/ fowl). So far I've traced the animal eating veghead idea to the meat industry, I would posit that they are the source of both of these ideas since they are *certainly* the source of the idea that vegheads are weak, pale sissies.
It makes sense to me anyway!
