Do you think it is wrong of me to wear leather shoes/jacket?!

Question:

Do you think it is wrong of me to wear leather shoes/jacket?

I have been vegetarian for a few years but hate plastic shoes and I have two leather jackets, am I being a hypocrite?

Answers:
I have been a veggie for many years and still occationally buy leather shoes. I feel I am doing all that I have the streangth, time, energy and passion to do. You can only live up to what you feel you are capible of doing. Every little thing counts so do what you can.

yep. u still kill an animal, whether u eat or wear it is irrelevant....it still died for u

do you think you are going to make a difference stop being so childish and look at real issues

How dare you! Someone get me some blood to throw at you! And a nice fat steak to eat!

Yes, you are being a hypocrite. If you wish to save animals, you should neither eat them nor wear them!

It doesn't matter what we think. If it doesn't bother you thats all that really matters. You can't live wondering if the next person likes or approves of you wearing leather.

I think if someone from PETA were to ever throw paint on me I would go to prison. Most leathers aren't harvested the way fur is harvested.

Depends why you don't eat meat. If it's because you just don't like the taste and not for any silly moral reasons then fine. If it is for stupid moral reasons then yes, you would be a hypocrite. Most 'vegetarians' are hypocrites though so it's not like it would matter anyway.

Stop punishing plants! Starve yourself and save the world!

vegetarian has to do with food you eat not what u where. Even IF u r a staunch buddhist and dun belief in killing animals, it's not wrong because u din kill the animals.
anyway the leather shoes/jackets are already there in the shops, u're just buying them. so u r not a hypocrite.

Why are you a veggie? If it's because you just don't like the taste of meat then wearing leather is fine.

If you're a veggie because you think you're being kind to animals then "YES", you're a hypocrite. I guess this isn't the answer you want, but if you think about it it's damn near impossible to live without using products tested / made from animals.

Every medicine you take has been rigorously tested on animals, every cosmetic ingredient, and the majority of the final cosmetic items have been tested, and most expensive cosmetics include animal products. Even loo-roll has been tested on animals!

No not at all. People eat the meat, the leather is simply a by product of the meat production. Carry on

Yes you are a hypocrite. Being Vegetarian means that you are against eating meet because you don't like animals being killed etc etc Your wear leather which is animal skin you may aswell be eating meet.

wear leather what are you gonna wear grass shirt and pants brocoli shoes?

Leather is the skin of an animal like fur. would you wear a fur coat?

If the answer is no then you are a hippocrite, in the nicest possible sense though, by asking this question you have dispelled ignorance regarding this matter.

I had a vegetarian teacher once that used to have a range of luxury leather clothes, she didnt believe in killing to eat, but looking good was a priority of hers. I think you should find an alternative to leather, or consider your vegetarianism as a preference not a conviction. If you prefer not to eat meat because of its texture and flavour there is nothing wrong with wearing leather, whoever if you disagree with the idea of killing to eat, would you eat Halaal meat?

I think of it like this, these are MY answers you form your own

Would you kill and animal thats trying to kill you?: Yes without hesitation.
Would you kill an animal to eat?: Yes
Would you kill an animal for Sport?: Only if im going to eat it later
Would you kill an animal for its skins?: Not solely but if im going to eat it, I'll not waste its skin.

In final though, I prefer the idea of killing to eat, than killing to dress well.

I think is a brave question you have asked, good luck with your vegetarian lifestyle.

Not really. The reason cows die is for meat.if cows were reared only for their hides it would not be commercially viable and synthetic leathers would be very advanced by now.If the cow has already been killed for meat then poor cow but that has happened so why waste the leather.Don't worry you are doing your bit by not eating the meat and if demand for meat dropped less cows would be killed.

I doubt that those animals were killed for the leather. They were killed for the meat. If you buy the leather product or someone buys it, it will be sold. You need to follow your own feelings, not what someone else tells you to feel.
Just my opinion.

it is hypocritical. you may not kill an animal for meat but you still support the killing of animals for their skin.

No I don't think its wrong for you. It is a choice you have to make for yourself.

Being a vegetarian means that you simply do not eat meat.

Now if you were a vegan, yes it would be wrong of you to wear leather shoes/jacket, because being vegan means you don't use any animal product.

Now if you wore a leather jacket etc that came from an animal slaughtered for meat then it would not as bad if the animal was slaughtered just to make leather.

But at the end of the day its up for you to make the choice.

It's a good job that people eat meat then isn't it. Otherwise that animal would have been slaughtered just so you could wear its' skin!

No, the leather that you wear is more than likely a by product of the meat industry anyway, the animal has not died to make your shoes and jacket, it has died to feed us meat eaters, the skin is simply left over and if it's useful then it's better for it to be used than wasted, don't you think?

I dont think its wrong of you. Its your choice. You arent going to save the animals that made the jacket and shoes, and to throw them away would be a total disregard. I gave my leather stuff to charity, but in retrospect, I am not sure I should have. Do whatever suits you. If it were me, I would keep what I have, but not buy more in the future. I dont want to support that industry, any more than I want to support the meat industry

yes you are being hypocrite because if you are a vegetarian you shouldt wear things that where animals that are now dead.

It depends entirely on your reasons for being a vegetarian. If it's for animal rights, then yes you are a hypocrite.

If it's for health reasons, then no.

I've been vegetarian my whole life and i have never thought twice about wearing leather (except perhaps during a few teenage years!). You are not a hypocrite at all - leather is a BY PRODUCT. The cow did not die for you, and I'm sure that if no one ate meat and cows were slaughtered for leather you wouldn't wear it right? And to say fur is like leather is ignorant and ridiculous. I won't go into detail because we all know how fur is made. it is an extremely cruel practise, and you can buy fake furs nowadays that only an expert could spot. don't beat yourself up, and to the person who wrote you can't make a difference, its about personal choice not saving all the animals. personally the idea of putting a piece of a dead animal in my mouth repulses me, but hey ho, everyone has to make their own decisions.

only you can make the decision of whether or not is wrong for YOU.
a lot of vegetarians still wear/own leather/suede goods and use them. (heck, a lot of vegetarians use animals products in their daily lives without even knowing it! ex: soaps, shampoos, toothpaste, etc.)

if at any time you get to the point where you might consider being vegan, then the items should be donated to a worthy place.

If you're vegetarian, I don't think it's wrong to wear leather. I don't eat meat or fish purely because I don't like the taste of it, but the animal would still be killed for someone else to eat anyway. Just like vegetarians can still eat eggs.

If you're vegan, that would be a different issue. Vegans don't use ANY animal product including leather, honey, eggs etc.

I wear vegetarian shoes you can get on internet and they are good , I am not a vegetarian! I think wearing leather is fine for some vegetarians as long as you are a vegetarian for health reasons and not ethical reasons.

If you want to wear leather then that is your choice

If it really bothers you than go to vegan
essentials.com and order a faux leather
jacket or buy a jacket made out of polymers.
You can find faux leather jackets, shoes,
belts, wallets, just about anything on sites
like Vegan Essentials and Pangaea.
Also you can find fashionable shoes made
out of synthetic man made material (p.v.c)
at places like walmart, target, and payless.
They are far less expensive than the vegan
shoes you find on sites.
What ever your decision. Good luck to you.

as far as i know vegetarians can wear/use animal products just can't eat them....it's vegans that can't
