Anyone know secrets to conquering meat craving?!
Anyone know secrets to conquering meat craving?
I'm lacto-vegitarian because I'm aware of how animals are slaughtered, I don't like the thought of eating them, and know how meat affects the body. Every once in a while, a hamburger or hotdog doesn't sound so bad though, and I nearly end up succumbing to my tastebuds. I can barely resist and have deliberately gave in a couple times. For the last few months I've held up against it, but I keep getting closer and closer to giving in again. Any type of hot-sauce-on-the-thumb trick to killing the urge to eat animal flesh?
Answers:
Vegetarian Chili (lots of protein in the beans).
Peanut Butter and Other nuts
Veggie Burgers and other meat substitutes for vegetarians (in the freezer section). There's tofu, soy hot dogs, soy sausages and a few other things in the produce section.
Protein
There is no substitute. Over time you will lose your desire to eat meat and after a long time (years) you'll have lost your taste for it all together. Try tempeh.
I have quite a bit of self control, so this has never been much of an issue for me. I suggest maybe you could watch videos such as the one in the link posted to stop wanting to eat meat.
You should try reading "Breaking the Food Seduction: The Hidden Reasons Behind Food Cravings---And 7 Steps to End Them Naturally"
by Neal D. Barnard, M.D.:
Is cheddar cheese addictive? How about steak? Or sugar? In Breaking the Food Seduction, PCRM president Neal Barnard, M.D., presents the evidence that these foods might actually have brain effects that keep you coming back, despite their health risks.
Barnard offers seven steps to breaking your food cravings, devoting a chapter to each one, with anecdotes and plenty of clear, sound, practical tips. Then he presents guidelines for healthy eating using "the New Four Food Groups"--vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains--with a three-week menu plan and 113 healthful, vegan recipes.
try eating more (or starting to eat) quorn products/,products from the 'meatfree' range, in the frozen section in supermarkets.
these taste similar to meat, and will help you to resist normal meat.
how long have you not had meat? cos i have been vegy about 1/2 a year, and i lost my taste fro meat long ago...give it a while and im sure you will give upo on meat!
well done fro sticking out this long...and if it comes to it, eat a tiny bit of meat on hte odd occasion. i dont like to recommend it, but dont let yourself get ill.
As a new vegetarian I have had to fight a few cravings. I tend to reach for a soy based product of what I'm craving...veggie burger, fajita, sausage, etc. Even a good grilled portobella mushroom does the trick when I might be craving steak. It seems to work for me and I have yet to give in. Good luck!
My experience has been that eating the imitation meat was the worst experience ever. I was expecting it to take care of those meat cravings by tasting the same (silly I know), however it tasted disgusting, and I was really disappointed. However all taste buds are different, and maybe you will find something you like. I think the meat cravings come from not having enough protein and nutrients. Carbohydrates keep me feeling full, however too much can be unhealthy. I like to make a hardy soup full of vegetables, and that keeps me feeling great!
I also visit the PETA website, for inspiration. I watch the videos they have on there, and that makes me wanna never touch anything related with meat.
Good luck, and stick with it, it's not easy, and I'm also a rooky and I understand it's hard at times. If you need any support, just shoot us an email, and I'm sure we can help you out.
Take a pound of fresh mushrooms. Slice them. Place them on a baking sheet and sprinkle generously with worcestershire sauce and broil in the oven on both sides. You can use canned sliced mushrooms of you like............ Enjoy !!!
you need to read the book "Slaughterhouse" and "Fast Food Nation" and "The Jungle". That should cure your craving.
I am Actually going thru the same thing...im also on a mission to build muscle and sometimes i feel like meat is the only way to get enough protein..........but ive actually stayed away from it for a good while now............... i really dont have a secret....but when i crave a burger i eat boca burgers taste the same to me........only other thing i can tell you is if you are serious then have some self control.......
Seven Steps to Breaking the Food Seduction
Tired of feeling like food has an uncontrollable hold on your life? Wondering whether you really could live without chocolate, cheese, sugar, or meat? Here’s a list of tips to help you free yourself from unhealthy food cravings:
1. Start with a good breakfast. Cutting hunger is the first step in cutting cravings.
2. Choose foods that steady your blood sugar. Beans, green vegetables, fruit, and whole grains help prevent blood sugar dips that can lead to cravings.
3. Eat at least 10 calories each day per pound of your ideal body weight. This tip is directed at calorie-cutting dieters who do not realize that, if they eat too little, their bodies stop making an appetite-controlling hormone called leptin. A person whose ideal weight is 150 pounds needs at least 1,500 calories per day, and probably much more.
4. Break out of craving cycles, which can occur daily, monthly (with a woman’s cycle), or yearly (with the change in seasons). Monthly chocolate cravings, for example, can be reduced with a low-fat, vegetarian diet, which tends to reduce the hormone swings that lead to cravings.
5. Exercise and rest are keys to restoring your physical resilience.
6. Use social support. Enlisting the help of friends and family makes changing habits much easier.
7. Take advantage of other motivators. New parents, for example, may decide to eat healthy foods not just for themselves, but for the sake of their children.
Most importantly, try the “Three-Week Break.” Research shows that if you have managed to set aside an addicting food, such as chocolate, for three weeks, you crave it much less than if you had just had it yesterday.
Breaking the Food Seduction includes a Three-Week Kickstart program and dozens of gourmet “addiction-free” recipes, including Portobello Mushroom Steaks, Eggplant Pecan Pesto, Tunisian Potato Salad, Spicy Noodle Soup, and Carob Walnut Fudge.
