Be sneaky with tofu?!
Be sneaky with tofu?
I just learned my husband has high cholesterol. Not good. He swears he won't eat tofu. I know that isn't the end all to help his health. But it sounds like a challenge to me, HA HA HA! He'll eat a quail egg rapped in bacon, but not tofu! lol.
Any ideas that will pass by the dectectors on my hubby and kids?
Thank you!

Sorry, I didn't mean to say my husbands like a kid. Total opposite. He is normally "I'll try anything once" type person. Watching "Everybody Loves Raymond" with the whole turkey made of tofu that they had to use a spoon to "carve" it, sent the idea to the trash bin. LOL. He is actually VERY BRAVE in the food department. hince the challenge!

my ex didn't like tofu either, but there are some things that will help him eat it.
First, buy a good quality tofu. Not all tofus taste alike, and some are really quite gross. I like the pre-seasoned ones that come in little squares (I forget the name, but you'll see they have mexican, italian and other flavors and the labels are yellow...not water packed). Tofu breakfast scramble is also a really yummy way to trick him. you can either dice it or crumble it up and saute it with veggies and spices, maybe even some cheese and he'll never know. You can make cakes with it, etc.
Other than tofu, you can try satien (which tastes just like chicken) or tempeh, which has a very nutty flavor that is quite yummy. I suggest getting the book "The Vegan Gourmet." there are some great, healthy but tasty recipes in there that i know even he will eat!
good luck!
Have start taking falxseed - its suppose to help with cholesterol
There is SO much that you can do with tofu. I think it tastes awesome and whoever created it is AWESOME. Try putting cubes in a pot pie - it looks like a potato. You can pan fry it w/ spices and put it in a sandwich. Theres a dip recipe too I've heard of. Put tofu in the blender w/mustard & mayo, spices and it tastes great! Look online for tofu recipes. You can even make cheesecakes & sweets with it.
If that doesn't work, tell them you won't cook for them anymore unless they TRY it. Come on, your husband is an adult! It's kids that refuse to try food!
Start feeding your husband 1 1/2 cups of steel cut oatmeal every morning. Oatmeal is loaded with soluable fiber and has been proven to lower cholesteral within 30 days. Check your facts on tofu to determine if the fat and protein levels are going to be good for your husband. Start purchasing lower fat cheeses, non-fat or 1% milk, and increasing your husbands intake of fish and chicken. You can also give him Omega-3 caps to help keep his heart healthy. Flaxseed is good, and you can add it to many of your dishes. If your husband is a meat and potatoes sort of guy, then look for the leanest cuts of beef and try cooking your potatoes in chicken broth and using less margarine or butter. Were you aware that lean beef actually has less fat than turkey? Amazing! Anyway, moderation is the key here.....and a glass of red wine!
i just made some veggie chili with tofu and people couldnt tell. id like to think its because i made it well, but my regular chili wasnt first prize worthy anyways.
Tofu itself has no taste. It takes the taste of anything that it is cooked with. I suggest trying things like Boca Burgers instead of hamburgers and some of the meat substitutes in place of what he is used to.
Tofu makes alot of people not familliar with it want to run for the exit doors if you suggest they try some out. You may have better luck trying some of the meat substitutes to begin with. Many of them are soy based so you can get the benifits of tofu offered in a more familiar form.
Boca burgers seem to be the most "meaty" tasting, even my non-veg hubby likes those. Quorn makes some really good faux chicken products, and Morningstar Farms has meal starters in "beef" and "chicken" varieties that are good in alot of dishes.
Another option great option is TVP. (textured vegetable protien, it's made with defatted soy flour) Use this to replace ground beef in any recipe, I use it regularly in chili, spaghetti, soups, casseroles, and to make taco and burrito filler. The first time I served it my family was complimenting the meal and halfway done eating before my hubby noticed I was eating the same thing as them for once. When I told him it was TVP and not ground beef, he and my son didn't believe me until I showed them the package.
