Why do people say animals are here to eat?!

Question:

Why do people say animals are here to eat?

They weren't! We are animals. Just because we are higher on the food chain than others, doesn't mean we have to eat them or kill them to survive.

WE CAN GET PROTEIN FROM OTHER SOURCES.
There's no need to be a caveman!

Answers:
They say it only because it is more convenient to stay the same than make a change. Like someone already pointed out, agriculture is not "natural". There is no other animal on this planet that owns other creatures, keeps them imprisoned, uses them for milk meat and clothing.... This is all far from natural, and yet you'll hear people claim otherwise.

Why did humans develop an ability to think, make choices and show compassion if we were meant to digest anything that comes our way? Just the fact that veganism exists shows that the thinking part of humanity is taking a further step in expanding our compassion towards other beings. We are not stuck in the past-

There are many wrong and cruel things in our history. Tradition and the past shouldnt justify what we do today. Veganism is the next step in evolution of the human mind. But some people still prefer to think like the caveman.

And for the person who mentioned Genesis: Maybe you should read the whole chapter, from page 1. Then you'll notice that Adam and Eve were created and lived as vegans. There was no death in the Garden of Eden. I'm not even a Christian but if you are, I find it surprising that you would bring this up and not know what you're talking about.

Also in visions of future paradise/heaven there won't be death, also according to the Bible. So if you're a Christian, and your God obviously considers a vegan diet as a part of a perfect vision, why not try to please him instead of coming here and criticising us who are only doing what you are supposed to do?

i agree with you, i hate it when i see other ppl eat meat, why cause any unecessary suffeering just to eat the way we want?? what if someone caused you pain just to eat you, would you like it?? veggies rock

While that's true, there's also the entirely logical argument that we ARE cave men.

Only about 12,000 years have elapsed since humans developed agriculture. Prior to that time, our diet consisted of the entire range of food products.

Have human beings evolved to the point where it's not natural to eat meat? No. We can see, for example, that most human beings haven't evolved to the point where we can properly digest dairy products--the only populations that have are in northern Europe where, evidently, dairy products were first consumed.

Vegetarianism, as a practice, is newer than dairy products as a food group.

I don't disagree with vegetarianism, I respect it and I have practiced it. I do disagree with holier-than-thou attitudes.

You are at the top of the food chain. That means that something has to die in order for you to live. You have one of three choices, either you kill an animal, a plant, or both.

ever read the bible?? its in there. check out genesis
and you get essential nutrients from eating meat.

human beings have evolved to eat meat. just like countless other carnivorous mammals. just take a look at our teeth. they are designed to cut and tear flesh. if we were meant to eat nothing but vegetables, we would have large flat teeth like a cow or a horse to grind grass.
man did not claw his way to the top of the food chain to eat broccoli.

People say that because they are either defending their taste buds or mentioning the fact that we raise animals to eat and they wouldn't exist otherwise. I myself do eat meat but limited and love my veges and fruit, but its all a matter of taste. Igrew up with a natural, health food Mom!

I know some meat eaters criticize vegetarians, but I don't think it's right for either side to be critical of the others' choices. Our personal choices should be respected. I DO get why vegetarians make that choice and totally respect that. Although not all make the choice because they want to protect animals. Some simply are making that choice as a means to eating healthier. My daughter is a vegetarian, and she would never be critical of what I eat or call me names because I eat meat. I have always accommoded her needs from the time she became a vegetarian. There are certain meats I won't eat, at her request, and I often will eat non-meat products such as breakfast sausage, "gr. beef" crumblies, sausage, etc. Those have to be in limitation, because in general I don't eat processed foods, (1) because of quality and (2) because of the high sodium content. I probably would have become a vegetarian at some point, but it's a struggle for me eat enough veggies as it is (and I probably don't really eat as much as I should), and I can only eat so many beans, and I only eat those in chili. So lighten up... we are not all evil ogres and we aren't all cavemen!!!

LOL - most people don't know that the word dominion doesn't mean eat. God gave us dominion over the animals. Hmm, you think they were entrusted into our care?

Guess what god put chickens and cows and pigs on this this earth to eat, not coddle! If you have a pet pig, or cow, or chicken, cool, but to raise it and eat it, that is ok. Guess what, hippie? STEAK FILET MINON, DEEP FRIED CHICKEN, BEEF TIPS IN NOODLES, SASUAGE, SCRAPPLE, HAM, quaterhouse steaks! go kiss your grateful dead cds, moron!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

I know its so anoying!!! We were talking about vegans at school and this girl in my class kept yelling out "God put animals on earth to eat!" but I don't think that is true.

:) i agree with everything you said. people maybe just dont want to view their lifestyle as wrong and maybe see the veg*n lifestyle as being too difficult to do. im not sure but how annoying is it to keep hearing that! grrr plus, its not like everyone is the same religion or has the same beliefs! i wish people would think before they speak
