People find comfort in homogeneity; they fear what is different. Ever notice how cliquish the lunch room in a school is?

Let them know when it is brought up that your diet is your personal choice and to be mature enough to respect that. Otherwise try not to make it an issue. Just do your thing quietly, and they'll move on to some other poor prey.

I think it's a personal choice and everyone should mind their own business. I'm not vegetarian or vegan, but I do have lots of vegetarian and vegan friends.

Some people think it's unhealthy. I don't understand that because nuts and beans (and eggs if not vegan) are in the same food group as meat. As long as you don't replace the meat with junk food it's even healthier for you.

Other people (such as a co-worker of mine) eat a lot of meat in their families and just couldn't imagine giving it up.

I will give anyone who decides to give up meat some respect (unless the begin preaching crap like "meat is murder").

The answer to your question is:
People are not horribly open minded and most of them are very stupid.

It is only weird if the vegetarian is "pushy" and tries to make others who do eat meat feel as if they are doing something wrong. It is a personal choice and no one is "wrong". Meat eaters do not want to be condemned for their choices any more than vegetarians do for theirs. I wish everyone would just "eat and let eat".

because humans are "designed" to be omnivores. If you live in California you should fit right in. They think people who eat meat are wierd.

That is not weird..if that is what u like than u go for it don't pay any mind to what other people think..... everyone has different ways...

That's probably because you have explained your reason for adopting this lifestyle. I for one admire vegans because they are very disciplined and have a lot of control. Try talking to your friends. I am sure they will understand.

its not weird its just something people don't understand...like most things, there is a good and a bad reason for being a vegetarian...the only problem i have with vegetarians is that they can't give me one good reason for not eating meat...its ok if thats your religion or if you truly believe its the healthiest thing for you but so many vegetarians dont have a real reason like this so i just dont know...dont not eat meat to be unique

plants are living things too i mean we're omnivores and i think they should leave u alone

Any time a person in society deviates from the "norm" it is quite likely to be considered "weird" unless there is a big campaign to make it "acceptable or cool". People choose their eating habits for several reason ranging from "just wanting to be difficult" to "taking an ethical stand" or "health reasons"!

If you want to fit in don't change your eating habits just change the way you talk about them. Explain your "personal choice" and try to be very gracious when you are a guest at someone's house. Warn them ahead of time about your diet and then graciously accept what they have to offer.

Good luck.

Majority will always think that a minority is weird. But who cares what they think, they're just a bunch that blindly follows tradition, copycats stuck in the past.

You are a thinking individual, and you know you're doing the right thing.

When you're raised in an environment where meat is always the main part of a meal, it can seem unnatural. When I first turned vegetarian, I felt like a rabbit for making dinner out of a bunch of side dishes.

I think a lot of people are oblivious to how much animal cruelty is actually considered legal. Until I delved into nutrition and 'food politics,' I took for granted that the government would be closely monitoring slaughterhouses to ensure that animals were killed in most humane way possible. If more people knew what was actually going on, I believe that vegetarianism would be quite popular.

I became a vegan a week ago and everyone I have told thinks I'm wacko except for my sister's friends!

because they are closed minded and misinformed. don't feel weird, we may be a minority, but its a good thing :)

Ok, just to clarify, I am not a vegan or vegitarian, but got my act together a couple of years ago and got much healthier and in shape, and generally speaking, I rarely eat red meat and mostly eat fish or poultry.

Anywho, my take is that meat and animal products are pretty much the cornerstone of the American diet. If you think about it, just about every popular food has some sort of meat or dairy: pizza, cheesesteaks, fillet mignon, ribs, chicken wings, hamburgers, mozzerella sticks, ice cream, etc. The fact of the matter is that our culture is dominated by fast foods that offer more pleasure than nutrition; fresh fruit or salads aren't as popular.

To answer the second part of your question, people equate vegetarians and vegans with either hippies (for those who are morally conscious), health freaks, or skinny wimps (since meat is loaded with protein and sometimes fat), or all of the above. As mentioned above, fast food restaurants are not exactly in sync with healthy eating, and so neither is popular opinion. Still, go for what you feel and dont let your classmates bother you.
