If you are a vegetarian are you allowed to eat fish?!

Question:

If you are a vegetarian are you allowed to eat fish?

Suppose, based off all my answers from previous questions I tried to go vegetarian for lets say a month. Would I be allowed to eat fish. Just to give a fair perspective of what it is like to be vegetarian I will post a blog. Starting tomorrow, I don't however want to be vegan. Sadly I enjoy cheese, also any suggestions would be great as far as recipes. Now just cause I eat meat doesn't mean that I don't love veggies. I would prefer veggies any day of the week.

Answers:
i agree with texaspice

becoming a vegetarian gradually might work best for you.

i've been answering all your q's today! lol

i'm in the same boat as you. i want to become a vegetarian, but giving up fish will be hard for me. i don't eat it all that much, but i really like certain kinds, and it's very healthy in moderation.

when i was a vegetarian for 3 meager months last year, i just cut it all out. Granted i only ate chicken, turkey and fish..but still cutting it out all at once can be hard. i would stick to cutting a few things out at once, and maybe eating fish every 2 weeks if you love it so much.

good luck!

btw i know what you mean i could never give up cheese..or eggs even though i only like them in baked goods...ahh i'm bad..:)

if you are a pesco-vegitarian then yes

No fish. Nothing with a face.

You are "allowed" to eat anything you want.

No, fish is an animal.

There are no rules. You can be as vegetarian as you want.

If you don't eat red or white meat but you eat fish that makes you a piscetarian, not a vegetarian. If you are a vegetarian for moral reasons - ie you believe eating animals is wrong - then eating fish surely goes against those morals? There's also nothing wrong with enjoying cheese - as a veggie getting sufficient protein is more difficult and cheese is an excellent source. Don't sacrifice your health for your ideals.

its up 2 you strict veggies eat no fish but is you cant resist tuna or whatever then i guess you are still a vegeterian even if you eat fish

No. You can only eat veggies. Fish is animal.

i dont believe so because its meat

no breathing animal with a face. good luck though.. cause i wouldnt be able to give it up sadly

strictly speaking who eat fish can not be called vegetarians. but the brahmins in Bengal eat fish and call them jalapushpas and they don;'t regard-eating eating fish as non vegetarian.THEY MAY BE CALLED FISHARIANS.

You become a vegetarian by choice not by some arbitrary allowed rules. It depends on what type of Vegetarian you want to be. A true Vegetarian doesn't eat any meat at all. I think to call someone somekind of vegetarian who eats meat is a misnomer cause vegetarians don't eat meat. and Fish is a meat. I was a near vegetarian for quite a while before I became a true vegetarian..
if you eat fish but no other animals then you could call yourself a near vegetarian that's what I did but
now I'm a true vegetarian but a near vegan.. just occasionally eat eggs, cheese, and dairy items about 3 times a month! when I give up these then I'll be a vegan! To try vegetarian for a mere month that's ridiculous.. that's just getting your foot wet so to speak. If you're really serious about becoming vegetarian try it for at least 3 months!

It's not a religion, and you make your own personal choices. Enjoy what you want and stop worrying about labels. Call yourself a vegan if you want. Call yourself a widget if you want. Then make the choices you want to make... ignore what others try to tell you to do. Think about what you're asking here.

You're basically saying "if I want to call myself a vegan, what am I allowed to do?" That is totally backwards. You should be asking... "Can I call myself vegan if I eat fish."

Rather than trying to fit your behavior to the label, choose what you want to do and ignore the labels.

You are of course "allowed" to eat fish; however, if you did eat fish you would be incorrect if you called yourself a vegetarian.

A vegetarian is a person who does not consume animals, regardless of *reason* for vegetarianism. It is a misuse of the word to call a person who eats animals the word specifically created for a person who does not consume animals.

The two are mutually exclusive.
Good luck with your efforts. I know transitioning to vegetarianism can be difficult. Perhaps some fake meats will help? Anyway, dropping all animals except fish is a good thing, even if you are not a vegetarian.

true vegetarians don't eat fish. Nobody is going to allow or disallow you to eat anything. It is a personal choice. Fish is generally in the meat category regardless of whether they say they are 'pesci-vegetarians'.

Eat what you want hun its just a name. If ya gonna be a strict veggie they dont tend to eat fish

Fish are animals....vegetarians do not eat animals. Many cheeses are not vegetarian friendly as well...so you have to look for cheese that has no animal rennet

You are allowed to eat whatever you want. Id say it depends on why you want to be a vegetarian. If its simply because you dont like the taste of certain meats then dont bother calling yourself a vegetarian - just stop eating those certain meats. If its something you do because you feel you need to (ethical/religious/health reasons) then you will either choose to or choose not to eat fish based on why you want to be a vegetarian. If your reasons are ethical then i would not suggest eating fish.

yes u can seafood is allowed unless ur vegan and some chicken is allowed i love sea food

their are many different levels of vegetarianism.....the highest level is what is called a vegan...only eats vegetables and fruit...they don't even eat anything related to animals....then you have those that will eat eggs and cheese but no meat...then you have those that eat fish, poultry, eggs and cheese but no other meat.....but vegetarianism is not like a religion....you can eat what you want or be what ever level you want to be....

I just wanted to add something.

It is true - you are not a vegetarian if you eat fish - BUT it can be a great transitional phase to eat mostly vegetarian with occasional fish until you no longer want to eat it.

I gradually cut things out of my diet and that was the best way for me. First red meat, then chicken and turkey, then fish, then eggs and then dairy. I think as long as you are continuing to strive towards reducing as many animal products in your life that is a good thing!
This will be a big change in your life and I think taking baby steps often helps you to stick with it and enjoy it more!

Nope, if you do, veggie cops will come and get you. But seriously, you can eat anything you want. It's just that you cant call yourself a vegetarian AND eat fish. Because vegetarians dont eat animals. Fish is an animal.

no...a vegetarian is a person who doesn't eat ANY meat. Fish is meat. Just not red meat.

vegetarianism is a self-regulated choice of diet
the question is,do you feel you can allow yourself to eat fish?

no, but you can be a semi-vegetarian and eat fish and poultry but no red meat/mammals.....that's how I was able to compromise.....

Well you are ALLOWED to eat anything you want. Vegetarians CHOOSE not to eat meat.
And I'm sorry, but if you eat fish, you would not be a vegetarian... Fish is meat.
but really is fish all that hard to give up?

umm as far as recipes... just search vegetarian recipes on the net... you'll get plenty websites.
I can tell you what I am eating tonight though :)...
Not very good with measurements, I improvise as I go along...lol
1 box Whole Wheat Pasta (the little twirly pastas)
Garlic (I put 3-4 cloves, but I really like it, you may want to adjust it...lol)
1 small onion
Basil (I like alot, I love that stuff... you'll have to put how much you want)
sun dried tomatoes (one little bag)- "revived" and cut up
olive oil
Salt & pepper

Cook the pasta- Saute the garlic and onions- "revive" and cut up the sundried tomatoes- add them to the pasta w/ the basil(chopped up) and sauted onions/ garlic- add some olive oil/ salt/ pepper... I guess that's how I make it...

And a salad-
baby spinach
cucumbers (cut up)
tomatoes (cut up)
raddishes (cut up)

Dressing-
olive oil
lemon juice
salt pepper
(or whatever you like)
Cut it all up- put it together- add dressing- eat :)

Oh and when I say "revived" I mean that I buy the little dryed up ones in the bag (not the smushy not- dry ones in a jar)
All I mean is that I throw them in a pot of boiling water to soften them.

Good luck with that though.

Vegetarianism is a choice, and with a choice comes "would", not "allowed".

If you eat animal flesh or any ilk, you're NOT a vegetarian, you're just a picky eater. If you eat animal products of any type, you're not a vegan.
