Vegetarianism--bad for your teeth?!

Question:

Vegetarianism--bad for your teeth?

I went vegetarian a year ago. It had been a while since my last dentist visit and when I went last week, the dentist found a horrendous amount of cavities. He said I must have changed something about my life that caused all those cavities to appear, and I suddenly thought...was it becoming vegetarian? Is there, by chance, something in meat that protects your teeth or something? It might sound crazy but it could be more than a coincidence.

Answers:
You may be consuming more carbohydrates. These are broken down by the enzymes in your saliva into sugars which, in turn become weak acids. This is easily combatted by good oral care.

On the up side, a high-fiber diet is actually better for your teeth. Whole grains, fruits and vegetables tend to have a flossing effect in the crevices between the teeth and don't become lodged there as the highly refined foods do.

There is nothing in meat that protects your teeth. My dentist is a vegetarian and said there is nothing we have to worry about that anyone else wouldn't have to. One problem I've been reading about in the news, though, is that with so many people drinking bottled or highly filtered water, they are not getting the benefits of the fluoridated municipal water, and so there is alot more tooth decay. Maybe a daily fluoride tablet would help you out.

No.

What else were you eating? Did you change your dental health habits? And how long had it been since you'd seen a dentist?

A vegetarian diet, and in particular a vegan diet, is actually much healthier than is an omnivore one, and you can't be healthy if your teeth aren't healthy.

depends what your diet consists of...if you eat tootsie rolls all day and didnt before you went veg than yeah, its u being a veg.

I don't think so because human teeth are actually mad for veggies because as you may know we have a digestive system of that of an herbivore

No, meat definitely doesn't protect your teeth. Veggies and meat eaters alike get cavities. I got a couple after developing a bad habit of drinking sweetened herbal tea in bed before falling asleep. Stupid, I know. I mean, I brushed my teeth 3 or 4 times a day, but brushing your teeth before bed is more important than brushing them in the morning!
