My boyfriend likes to drink. I am a vegan. Is this a good mix?
Does anyone (a nutritionist, healthcare professional) know if it is okay to drink alcohol if you are a strict vegan? My boyfriend likes to drink socially. I prefer not to drink but I am willing to indulge him and myself. Every other aspect of our relationship is wonderful but I hate the fact that he tries to get me to drink with him all the time. Is there such thing as vegan alcohol? Is it okay to drink certain alcoholic beverages if you are a vegan? I am a vegan because I like how it makes me feel. I don't drink or smoke because I don't like how the two activities make me feel or look. Advice anyone...

I am a vegan who likes to drink, so I suppose I can throw my two cents in. You do not need to check labels on hard liquor (vodka, rum, whiskey, etc.) because they are plant-based, and do not use animal products for processing. Where you need to be a little careful is with beer and wine. Some wines are processed with egg whites and some beers are processed with insinglass, which comes from fish bladders. Also, some beers have honey in them. I don't have a list of vegan beer and wine for you (I'm a hard liquor girl), but I believe that veganporn.com has a running list of them.
I also want to disagree a bit with all of the respondants who are saying that your boyfriend is pressuring you too much, etc. I don't think it's so terrible for him to ask you to join him in a drink once or twice a week. I'm not saying that you should feel pressured to overdo it, but one drink can be a nice way to unwind together. Some kinds of alcohol are actually pretty good. You might like drinking more if you experiment a bit to find some favorites. Anyway, good luck to you, and don't forget to ask about those beers and wines before you drink them.
If he is wanting you to do something you are not comfortable with it sounds like you have more problems than dietary considerations. Alcohol is strictly fermented plants and water (except mead which is fermented honey), so vegan-wise should be fine, but I think you are on the right track already with not drinking or smoking. If he can't deal with that, find someone who can.
being a vegan doesnt affect you in what you drink unless your drinking animal byproducts(yaegermiester has deer blood in it) so i would believe its fine to drink a little bit.
It kind of sounds like you're looking for a way out of getting pressured to drink. That's no fun. I also don't drink or smoke and am a vegetarian for health and moral reasons. To be honest with you, it's hard for someone who is not a drinker to be with someone who likes to drink a lot and can't quit pestering you to. I'm just telling you this as someone who has been in a relationship with a drinker.
As for if there are any vegan beers ... I listed a website here at the bottom. But don't drink if you don't really want to. I'm glad I don't! :)
You can, just choose vegan brands.
Here is a list of beers, liquors, wines etc..
Especially be careful with wines, because many contain eggs. Many alcohols are filtered using fish parts.

Anheiser (?) Busch is on the list, but many vegans don't support them anyway because they sponsor rodeos and Seaworld.
And of course, if you prefer not to drink, that is fine too. You don't have to drink just because your boyfriend does. If you do not drink, he will always have a safe ride home.
Good luck.
:)
Its a personal choice. It isn't really a problem that your boyfriend likes to drink, its the fact that you won't drink with him and he won't allow you be yourself and stick to a fruit drink or soda. Alcohol is by and large a natural process from wheat, rice, corn, malt, etc. There are no animal products in it, but if you don't wish to drink or smoke make that clear to your boyfriend and that this is one point that you do not wish to compromise on and respecting your wishes is also very important. If he can't do that, then you may have consider what kind of future you have with him. Respect is a big deal.
Don't drink if you don't want to, and don't let your boyfriend pressure you into it. Matter of fact, don't let him pressure you into anything you don't want to do, and if he continues, it's time to dump this guy! You say every other aspect of your relationship is wonderful, but in my experience, guys like this turn out to be even more manipulative than they seem at first. You say you don't like how drinking makes you feel or look, and I think that's a good reason not to do it, even though I personally enjoy drinking. Lots of people seem to have issues with non drinkers, and I think it's because so much socializing goes on over drinks, that frequent drinkers aren't sure how to relate to people who are not also drinking.
Anyway, no adverse effects will come from drinking alcohol if you are a strict vegan. However, everyone should be aware that drinking excessive amounts does deplete your body of certain vitamins and minerals. That being said, drinking in moderation can be an enjoyable experience, so you shouldn't feel the need to abstain just because of your vegan lifestyle. There are plenty of vegan alcohols out there. Try these sites:
Silly question.
Look, no animals were harmed in the production of alcoholic beverages - be they wine, beer or distilled spirits.
The ONLY possible twist COULD be in some wines, which use parts of chicken eggs to act to clarify wine.
See link for additional info.
Some spirits and wine have glassine in it, which I believe is from fish bladder. Check out PETA's website for all sorts of vegan info.
This is soley to Kizle above.....DEERS BLOOD? My God man, hey I have some ocean front property for sale in Montana, only $3.00 an acre! Want in?
Jgermeister ("hunt master") is a German bitter liqueur that is a complex blend of 56 herbs, fruits and spices. Sorry to the weak minded, no deers blood.
Okay, I don't do the whole vegan choice b/c of the feeling but b/c of the allergic reaction that occurs to me. Well, I'm really happy to find someone who likes it for the feeling that means your doing it for yourself not too many of you. Well, first of all your realtionship seems really healthy and thats the thing... you may find it hard to let go for one reason but, you should make it a point that you just don't wish to drink tell him why and how it makes you feel. he should respect your choice as you respect his. Peer pressure can be hard but, this really isn't the case you just want to have a good time with him. I'd suggest to make non-alcholoic drinks that taste just as good and even look like the real thing. It's fun to hang out and have.
Good Luck hope he will understand remember it's your choice. You've already made so may good choices so I'm sure it work out for the BEST!
not a good mix. Also drinking alcohol is not healthy regardless of whether you are vegan. And it sounds like your boyfriend is ready to get drunk.
