where do people get these notions? are we living in the dark ages ? today you can give both cats and dogs total balance and nutrition with vegan diets .. I have 2 dogs(both rescues) , 5 cats ( only 2 are mine both feral..3 are my sons domestic rescues) all vegan like me ..and when people tell me this about them first ..yes cats are carnivores, and dogs are omnivores in the WILD ..this is not the wild .. there are dog and cat foods very healthy that are available on line or you can make your own.. and my cats and dogs also eat whatever I Cook and supplement with their dry foods ... last my oldest cat lived to 25 and my German shepherd to 19 and 1 month ..how many pet owners can say that ? but you must make sure that as yourself , they get there proper nutrients and I for one do ! so investigate and read many companies have already done the research for you ..see below ...

cats and dogs need protein. no carbs.
they need meat, they are carnivores. Cats can go blind without the taurine in meat.
A varied diet of meat, vegies, rice, herbs, etc. They need balance just like we do. We can't expect them to change the diet of thousands of years just for us.
Oh and of course part of their diet should include lots of cuddles and love!
It is not suggested that you start a cat on a vegan or vegetarian diet. I'll come back with more information.

They need protien, like the first poster said - but there are some organic and free range options out there. But there are options out there to replace the meat as well - usually from what I have seen this requires you to do a home made diet, where you balance out the protien source, make a large amount of it, then put small freezer bag portions away and use them daily. It's very time consuming though!
