I'm sure your parents wouldn't object to you just eating veggies at the table? Or you can go shopping with your mom and say "hey, i thought we might try something different tonight." and maybe pick up some tofu. Get a copy of the cookbook "Vegan With A Vengeance." I have given it to many people in my family and they have started to prepare vegan meals.

In response to the first person who posted...kosher meat is also kept in cages. They are not treated more humanely than other animals. And before anyone gets in a snickett with me...I am an orthodox jew, and used to eat kosher meat daily. I started visiting the farms when I became veggie and discovered they are no different from regular farms. My hubby who is ultra-orthodox also became vegan after he saw that kosher meat is not more humane than non kosher. Just wanted to clear that up. :)

good for you, i am 13, and i tried being a vegetarian for a while, but i would crack when Dad made pork ribs. instead of being a full vegetarian, explain to your mom that you will only eat free- range chicken and eggs, plus kosher meat. that means that the chicken is raised in a farm, not little cages. kosher meat is approved by many religious groups as more humane than regular. plus check labels for natural meat, without preserves, hormones or chemicals. those animals are usually abused. also go with turkey or soy burgers, they are
healthier and more humane.
good luck, and eat your veegies.
plus- the meat with hormones, etc. can make it more fatty.

Thats great! check this site out

You will find alot of easy to make , inexpensive recipes here. Talk it over with your mom and see if she would like to help !

Umm..i tried vegetarian bout 2 months ago and i bought vegan burgers and veggy nuggets...they sound nasty but they taste the same as regular..they are made out of soy beans. Just I advise you to NOT get Morningstar Veggy burgers...they are disgusting...

And to get your pretein you CAN take protein pills but i didn't do that so i don't know

Talk to your cousin about it since he knows you better than us. Also check out these links. Talk to your mom, and try to work out some ways you can be vegetarian, but eat with the family. For example, if it's spaghetti night, you can have yours with tomato sauce instead of meat sauce. If it's a stir fry, she can cook the meat separately from the rest, and those who want it can add it in later. Also, 12 is old enough to learn how to cook and help out in the kitchen if you aren't already!

Good sources of veggie protein are beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, quinoa, tofu, tempeh, and fake meats. Take your pick.

Kosher and Halal is approved by certain communities because of the processes involved and adherence to religious health safety laws, not because it is more humane. I certainly don't see how an animal having it's throat cut and bled to death without stunning by electrocution or percussion is more humane than animals rendered unconscious prior to being slaughtered.

Good luck on your vegetarian journey! Be persistent :-)

if you really want to do it do it.

first off, you shouldnt do this because you would like to lose a few pounds. that should not have anything to do with it. the vegetarian lifestyle is much healthier in respect to cholesterol and heart disease and will in effect probably allow you lose weight in the end combined with exercise, however it should not be a main goal of yours in doing this. When i became vegan it was very difficult to deal with my discustingly carnivorous family. the only way to do it is to sit down and plan everything out day by day for the first couple of weeks. go shopping with your parents and slip things into the cart that seem like just healthy items that you would probably eat anyway. then pick up some tofu or veggie burgers and just say you want to try something new. as time goes by, your family will be forced to realize that this is something that you truly stand for and they will be more obliged to compomise for you sake. please do not refrain from telling them to avoid confrontation. starving yourself is almost worse than just shutting up and eating the poor animal. i wish you the best of luck.

buy a bulk bag of nuts, they r filling, contain protein, and easy "snack" food. if u can take almonds, try soaking them overnight first to make them easier to digest, and better tasting in my opinion =)
if u want to eat w/ur mom, eat the sides, and tell her ur reasons for not eating the meat
congradulations!!!
