Getting enough protein?!
Getting enough protein?
I'm trying to become vegetarian and my parents are worried that I won't be getting enough protein. Does anyone know if they make protein pills. I know about the shakes but they can be pricey and I am on a budget. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Answers:
Don't worry. Most Americans get about double their protein needs. There are plenty of vegetable based proteins. And they're healthier, too, causes they don't have any cholesterol and are lower in fat.
Good protein sources:
Beans
Nuts and nut butters
Seeds
Lentils
Tofu
Tempeh
Fake meat (veggie burgers, etc.)
Eggs (if you're not vegan)
Dairy (if you're not vegan)

My mom made me eat protein tablets when I was growing up because I would not eat meat. Now I love meat. Anyway. They do exist. I have not been able to find them, if you do, let us know.
actually most americans get too much protein in their diet.
Vegetarians and vegans get about the normal amount.
Most "fake meat" like meatless chicken, veggieburgers things like that are made with soy beans.
Which have ALOT of protein.
My parents were worried too when I started to be vegetarian.
I bought them being vegetarian for dummies, and they're ok with it now, b/c they know alot about it.
I hope this helps.
check this site it gives u all the details abt proteins

The whole protein thing is pretty much a myth. Like a previous user mentioned, protein defiency is really rare in the West. Check out http://www.thechinastudy.com/
The West's obession with protein is bizarro to say the least.
The best thing you can do (anyone can do) is have a balanced meat-free diet. Eat fruits, veg, nuts (nuts have high protein levels), beans, seeds, healthy oils and drink lots of water.
Try subscribing to something like www.fitday.com and log your nutrition in there- it's not perfect for vegans, but it's a good start.
Do you feel good? Look good? If you think your parents are just being too protective, try visiting http://www.vegsoc.org/ (vegetarian society) and printing off some info for them to read to put their minds at ease.
Join a few veggie forums and get some advice, people will be really helpful in how to handle parents, busy lifestyles, balanced nutrition etc.
I always laugh when meat eaters quiz veggies about nutrition. Nearly every meat eater I know seems to have a defiency in one thing or another. Vegetarians and vegans are far more likely to get a balanced diet, as we pay attention to our bodies and don't just load up on crap from supermarkets and fast food joints.
Beans and nuts have good amounts of protein, but do not fully replace the types of proteins you get from meat.
I don't know where you all get your info from, but most Americans, especially vegetarians do not get enough protein. Everyone should be eating more protein and less carbs, opposite of that old food pyramid that they used to teach in school. And of course plenty of fruits and vegetables.
I was raised vegetarian and have been almost vegan most of my life. I have never had a protein deficiency and have always been athletic. The billion vegetarian Indian Hindus are not suffering protein deficiency except maybe for the ones that are dirt poor. Don't worry about pills, just eat real food and you'll be fine.
You don't need any protien suppliments, its just a myth spread by meat-eaters who cannot be bothered to learn or look at diets.
I've been veggie for 27 years, take no pills or suppliments. You know what ? I run an arable farm and am as strong as an ox.
Its all meat-eater rubbish.
Most people only need 20- 40 grams of protein a day. Anything over that is excreted.
Meat protein contains the complete amino acids your body needs. Plant proteins are incomplete so if you cut out meat, you need to eat plant proteins in combinations, such as beans and rice, to get complete proteins for the amino acids your body has to have.
Eggs are great protein sources and egg white is almost pure protein. Peanut butter (peanuts are actually another legume, a bean) is also an excellent source, especially with whole grain bread.
The best thing is to eat a balance diet and not rely on supplements. Protein powder is a bunch of hype. It is an expensive blend of dried egg white and whey with flavorings, preservatives, and a bunch of junk I would not want in my body!
you can be a semi-vegetarian until you feel good enough to be a true vegetarian.
