also, for future refrence.... i am becoming a vegan for verious reasons. all of them are good reasons and i am absolutely sure about it. i don't really want to hear about how you think its dumb. that is a waste of my time... and its also a wasted answer. c'mon people, instead of telling of vegans and vegetarians about how stupid we are you could be doing something much more productive! (like e-mailing your friend you havent talked to in forever, instead of rambling about your openion to someone who dosent care)

You're right. Some margarines are made with partially hydrogenated oils and have trans fats. But luckily, there are now vegan brands that don't. Such as Earth Balance. Which is absolutely delicious.

Anyway, no need to eat butter or fake butter. Use olive oil instead. :-)

Use olive oil instead of butter where you can. It'll be fine on bread, but nasty on pancakes.

Why are you "becoming a vegan"? Did someone tell you that it was cool? You seem to be endorsing and adopting a lifestyle that you know nothing about.

So-called "vegans" come in all flavors. I'm sure you'll hear all about it in the answers you get. Forget the BS. Eat a healthy, balanced diet and exercise. You're an omnivore, hon. Go with it.
Peace

PS:

If you don't want the opinions of strangers, then don't ASK for them. I see you've already adopted that pissy, defensive attitude that "vegans" aspire to. Maybe I was wrong. You're a PERFECT candidate to become a "vegan". Spread what ever makes you feel righteous on your bread, hon.
Again, peace...

I question your purpose, but to inform you about margarines, not all are nasty.

Smart balance, earth balance are both healthy choices, do the research on them - no transfats or hydrogenated oils.

Why do some of you question my comments, I have been a vegan for a number of years and am currently so close to being a vegan it is what most people call me.

I only question her purpose because she just "...realized that vegans don't eat butter..." Maybe she has some more research to do, but I hope she follows through.

PERFECT SOLUTION
i eat earthblance natural buttery spread
its trans fat free
and its healthier
not butter
they sell it at traders joe or whole foods i think

What the heck is wrong with some of these people giving your answers?

Anyway, Earth Balance is the only thing I've been able to find. I'm not a huge fan of margerines/butter substitutes, but butter isn't really great for youeven if you aren't vegan/vegetarian, so it's better to cut it where you can anyway.

I wish you the best of luck!

Hi there.

I've vegan, have been for years. I'm the healthiest I've ever been in my life- going vegan cut down allergies, headaches etc. I have more energy, feel better about myself.

Vegans don't eat butter, but there are plenty of 'vegan' butters and magarines around. They wont taste exactly the same, but at least they wont be filled with the blood and pus cells that are contained in milk ;-)

I'm pretty sure you can also buy vegetable ghee reasonably easy in shopping markets if you want to replace butter in cooking Indian cuisine or making vegetarian sweets.

Like others have said, butter and margarine eaters (both vegan and non-vegan) need to understand that most butter and margarine isn't the healthiest option. You can spread nut butter on toast, use houmous as a replacement in most sandwiches etc.

And for the anti vegan brigade- seriously, haven't you got better things to do with your time? Like check your cholesterol levels?

The vegan alternative to butter that you're thinking of is margarine, and it has hydrogenated oils that are terrible for your health. You have every right to be concerned! Just try to find margarines that don't contain any hydrogenated oils and you'll be fine. Earth Balance margarine is really healthy (as far as butter/margarines are concerned :) and it tastes wonderful. Definitely try it out!

There are vegan spreads that are not bad at all....Earth Balance comes to mind.

I too, wont eat the plastic fake butters or margarines. Check to see if you have a local food co op that sells raw butter made from the milk of well cared for cows. Dont worry about fitting into a strict version of what someone else defines as the "right" way to go vegan. Make whatever exceptions and changes you need to suit your individual needs. Good luck on your journey!

I like to use avocado to relace butter on bread etc.
When there is a craving for butter check you don't need a sprinkle of salt, I find that salted butter in pasta is easily replaced by olive oil (fat) and herbamare (salt)

fake butter is 'margarine'. it's made of transfats.
Just avoid it.

Well, you can always use olive oil.

And this brand of vegan margarine seems ok for you...
http://www.earthbalance.net/ I think that is better for you than real butter.
(it is non- hydrogenated and has no trans fats)

Smart Balance is available in almost every supermarket. It is trans-fat and hydrogenated oil-free. It really does taste like butter to me, and has the same texture. Much better for you than real butter or other margarines.
