Question:

I want to know what spirulina is.?

Answers:
It′s a kind of algae growing in water. It is incredibly nutritious. One normally buys it in tablet form to use as a nutritional supplement, a bit like a multivitamin tablet. Spirulina is a natural source of essential vitamins, protein, vitamins, amino acids, minerals, chlorophyll, carotenoids, anti-oxidants and omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids. Well, with an energy boosting punch like that, it seems like it is the answer to a lot of our health problems.

It's a blue-green algae

the good bacteria aka-green algae.

It's medicine...a pill which is generally taken to give you energy, to control your weight, to make your skin look better...lots of benefits. Google for those.

Spirulina

From Wikipedia

Spirulina (dietary supplement), a popular health-food supplement made from the Arthrospira genus of cyanobacteria.
Spirulina (genus), a cyanobacterium, not used as a dietary supplement.
Spirulina (suborder), a group of cephalopods including Spirula spirula

algae indeed. They claim it is good for many things (high cholesterol, cancer, general resistance, heart disease... that's probably why they thought it might be good for losing weight too..) It was originally used for people suffering from hunger, as it contains high protein and vitamin b12.

Spirulina platensis (Nordstedt) Geiteler was grown in waste water collected from pig manure biogas digester pond. The waste water was dilected into 10, 30 and 50% prior to use. The cultivation was run for 30 days. The primary production, water quality change and nutritional values of S . platensis were studied every 3 days.

Primary production of S . platensis cultivation in 10 , 30 and 50 % of the waste water, were recorded biomass : 0.02 - 0.19 , 0.02 - 0.22 and 0.05 - 0.32 g/l (dry weight) chlorophyll - a : 38.60 - 60.90 , 39.30 - 60.20 and 47.10 - 69.20 mg/l , respectively. The statistical comparision showed that the biomass and chlorophyll - a in 50 % waste water were higher than those in 10 , 30 % waste water significantly at 90 %.

The physicochemical properties of S . platensis cultivation in 10 , 30 and 50 % waste water were BOD5 : 0.68 - 101.03 , 1.76 - 10.50 and 2.40 - 10.60 mg/l, COD : 110.10 - 1,074.00 , 95.30 - 1,048.00 and 137.00 - 1,943.00 mg/l , NH3-N : 0.05 - 27.00 , 0.07 - 71.10 and 0.09 - 71.70 mg/l , NO3-N : 0.01 - 0.74 , 0.01 - 0.73 and 0.06 -1.51 mg/l, PO4-P : 2.74 - 22.10 , 10.50 - 26.67 and 28.40 - 54.40 mg/l, respectively. By the end of the cultivation , in 10 % waste water, S . platensis had removed 86.24 % of COD , 58.92 % of PO4-P , 99.81 % of NH3-N and 93.33 % of NO3-N. At 30 % dilution, 90.90 % of COD , 58.38 % of PO4-P , 99.90 % of NH3-N and 52.94 % of NO3-N, while the 50 % dilution, 47.80 % of PO4-P and 99.87 % of NH3-N were removed but COD and NO3-N increased by 92.95 and 200.00 % .

From the statistic analysis at 90 % significantly, the average of pH , COD and NH3-N of the waste water after the S . platensis cultivation were lower than those before, but the DO after the cultivation was higher.

The nutritional values 10 , 30 , 50 % waste water after the treatment were moisture : 4.95 - 5.31 , 4.84 - 4.98 and 5.78 - 6.20 % ; ash : 32.90 - 37.30 , 33.70 - 38.30 and 29.20 - 34.80 % ; crude fiber : 0.11 - 0.48 , 0.06 - 0.07 and 0.05 - 0.05 % ; crude protein : 26.70 - 28.80 , 31.00 - 33.70 and 47.80 - 51.00 % ; crude carbohydrate : 29.50 - 32.20 , 24.50 - 27.10 and 9.73 - 13.00 % ; crude fat : 0.92 - 1.05 , 1.05 - 1.29 and 1.27 - 1.62 % as percent dry weight. As statistical comparision at 90% significantly, the average of crude protein and moisture in 50 % waste water were higher than those in 10 % and 30 % waste water, the crude fat in 50 % waste water were higher than in 10 % waste water, the crude carbohydrate in 50 % waste water were lower than those in 10 % and 30 % waste water.

In conclusion, the highest primary production was from 50 % waste water. On completion of the cultivation, the water qualities were found that, COD , NH3-N in 10 , 30 and 50 % waste water, were declined to meet the laws and standards of pollution control in Thailand. The nutritional values of S. platensis in particular crude protein and crude fat were highest when grown in 50 % of waste water.

It's an algae.

Spirulina is a high protein dietary supplement made from a type of algae or seaweed. It's very widely used and available in several forms.

It gives a real boost at the start of the day!

It comes from seaweed. You can buy it in a tablet. Last time I took it though I threw up ! guess I must be intolerant to it. I have tried again with half a tablet cos it is supposed to be really good for you, but made me very nauseous.
