Why do people care so much if you are a vegitarian?!

Question:

Why do people care so much if you are a vegitarian?

I don't get it. Why do people care? I just don't understand why some one would care what another person eats! If you eat meat, how does someone that doesn't eat meat effect you? Why is this an issue with some people?

I definately do agree that no one should act like they are better than anyone for any reason. And what your beliefs are, are your beliefs and I hate when people try to preach their beliefs and try to change mine. I understand how the non-vegitarian people would feel if some one was acting that way.

I'm sure there are some holier-than-thou vegans and vegetarians out there, but I've never met any. I have had alot of people make fun of me when they find out I don't eat meat, and especially when they learn it is because of animal rights (as though it would b OK for any other reason in their mind). The thing that really drives me nuts are the narrow-minded oafs who start spouting off about the animals they've hunted, etc. I used to try to be polite but not any more. Also, for those who always talk about humans having dominion over animals and the earth, I think a better word is caretaker. We may have been given animals to use, but we need to be responsible about how we use and treat them. I don't understand why the rude meat-eaters always have to get their 2 cents in, when their comments are obviously meant to harass us.

because it's wierd. and quiet often unhealthy.

Cause some people just like DRAMA.. and to judge people..

Well, for starters, I am not a vegetarian and can only give you MY opinion. I do NOT speak for everyone.

I get the impression that vegetarians care what WE eat more than we care what THEY eat!! How cruel of us to eat meat that came from an animal!! How quick they are to give us a medical opinion of how steak just rots in our stomach...... or how it is inhumane to kill animals...... But let me tell you this, the last time I checked, God gave us animals to do just that with. To hunt them and eat them. I am a Catholic/Christian and firmly believe that is what he placed animals (certain animals, that is) on earth here for! I never have had the experience of another meat eater just criticizing a vegetarian but sure have experienced a vegetarian putting up their noses when I order a steak.

I asked a similar question a week or two ago and the responses were pretty crazy. I gathered, people are offended that you are making a choice, even though it is personal, to not eat something THEY are eating. Like, it's an insult to them and you think that you are better than they are. *shrugs* I've really only seen one vegetarian zealot on here, and for this being the veg board, a LOT of meat eaters. Meat eaters take the concern from a vegetarian the wrong way. Personally, I'm a vegetarian because the meat that is currently produced IS NOT NATURAL. It's pumped full of hormones and crap that is wrecking our bodies.

That's my question down below if you're interested :)

i have been a vegetarian since i was 6yrs old through my own choice. i am now 20. i hate how when people find this out, they say 'well what do u eat??'
like WTF i eat normal food, everything but dead animal bodies init. lol. some people are so ignorant!

I think mostly people feel insecure when someone is doing something different from what is considered "normal". Often, they resent the fact that someone is doing something they feel incapable of. I agree that it is silly and ridiculous. Thats the same thing as worrying about what brand of shampoo someone uses-who gives a flip?

The majority of people are uncomfortable with what's different to them. It's natural for them to look at different people as sideshows that either they can look at weird or incredible. questions about a different lifestyle should be expected if not the majority's way of life. eh, some people are just close-minded.

My friend is a vegetarian too, and its stupid how people reacts for this. I sometimes think that people just don't know how to mind their bussiness and respect other peoples life. I'm not a vegetarian myself but I respect a lot this action in people, specially when you do it for animals. I'm a member of Peta2 and animalsmatter.org and since I eat meat I dont wear fur. But keep being a vegan, you'll be healthier; the ignorants are going to be full of dead animal cells.

in response to number 1 answerer it's NOT wierd and NOT unhealthy

and yes i have experienced ppl who are SHOCKED that i am vegetarian.....but most of the time they are curious

there are many vegetarian cultures in this world and these ppl happen to be extrememly healthy and happy

I am not vegetarian, and in my opinion, the ones I know are the ones who make a big deal out of it, and I mean a huge deal. Almost like a holier-than-thou attitude becuase they don't eat meat. I don't care what you eat as long as you chew with your mouth shut and don't eat my stuff! But not eating meat does NOT make you a better person that anyone else. Doesn't make you smarter or prettier and usually no else cares except the people you're trying to impress anyway.

I never understood it either. I always thought if someone feels the need to make fun of someone else because of their personal choice, its an obvious insecurity of their own. Perhaps they know that we are doing something right, and the anger comes from knowing they don't have the courage to do the same. I can see however where some get incredibly irritated by those vegetarians.vegans who find the need to constantly provoke meat eaters about there choices. Its the ones that attack without provocation I will never understand. ie..minding my own business at work when someone decides to come up to me and tell me how fun it was when they once snapped a chickens neck, or how theyd love to take me out for a steak dinner? What is that!!!?

Fear and insecurity. What else can it be?

I always wondered about that. I knew this guy who was a real pig. He ate anything, drank beer and had a huge pot belly.
No one said a word. he said they never cared one bit then one day he had a heart attack and almost died. Had his arteries replaced from his leg in a very painful surgury.
So he decided to go vegetarian and try to eat very healthy.
Everyone through a fit and at a party they were all making fun of him not drinking a beer. Why is it okay to stuff yourself but if someone decides to start eatig healthy everyone gets on the band wagon and gives them a problem. Even his mother said, they seems to restrictive. But beer, fried chicken and bacon rines are not? He wouldn't eat chocolate cake and ice cream? tell me the food value in that?

some of those carnovers think that it is inpossble and vegetarianisim is in fact very healthy it can prevent cancer and heart desise as long as the person is getting all of their nutrients

I completely agree with Heidi.

I see SOOOO many more meat eaters on this topic than actual vegans or vegetarians.

They like to rub it in that they LOVE meat. It's really stupid, in my opinion. Why do they have to come on our boards to rub it in our faces how much they love it? I mean, there will be a question that goes something like "what can i eat besides meat for protein?" and some, mind my french, jerkoff will go " EAT MEAT THAT"S WHAT ITS THERE FOR" or something like that. I mean, jeeshhh live and let live!

I just became a vegetarian, and i have absolutely NOTHING against people who want to be vegan, vegetarian or meat eaters. Do what you want! I was a meat eater, and i don't feel bad about it at all. I became veg because I became more aware of the conditions that meat in this uber-industrialized nation is being rendered. My whole family eats meat, and they know my reasons for being veg. Even when i ate meat, I only liked poultry and fish. So, it is also a personal health decision that i made.

People need to lay off. Everyone is entitled to their beliefs, and on both sides of the spectrum there are extremists. There are extreme meat eaters and extreme vegans alike who piss me off--BECAUSE they like to push their opinions onto others.

So relax everyone! We are all in this thing called life together, no matter how we choose to live it :)

I will never understand why people poke thier nose where it doesn't belong. Meat eaters are often yelling that vegetarians/vegans are preaching to them about their diet, but I hve found it the other way around. Meat eaters often bring it up and then if you try to defend you way of life, that they automatically yell that you are pushing you ways on them.

This Easter past my family got together, and since I don't eat meat I just had one of those tofurkey things(wasn't in the mood to cook for real) Any way my sis decided she want to try it and I said fine. She ate a piece and then said, "It ok, but there is no way I would want to eat that way." I responded "Its not bad, I enjoy it and do not miss eating meat." Well, as soon as the word began comming from my mouth she said "oh god, here we go again." I felt totally attacked for nothing and she was the one who brought it up in the first place. I find this to be the case a lot of the time. I am a quiet vegetarian for the most part, I don't go around preaching, I just defend myself if nessesary. I have friends that still think it is funny to announce that they are "ejoying thier dead animal" just because I am in the room. And no one else in the room at the time would say anything. However if I was rude enough to come into a room and say something along the lines of "Well, I hope everyone is enjoying thier carcass, etc" then I would be told I was preaching. It a double standard.

However its not just for vegetarians. People poke thier noses where they don't belong in a lot of cases. I have a diabetic friend and her major pet peeve is when she is going to have something with sugar and people around her ask why she is eating that or if its ok to eat it. So, I find security knowing it isn't just my vegetarianism that people feel they have the right to comment on, but many other things.

ah, you have stumbled onto the small war that goes on here. What's happening is that some people are becoming vegetarian because they are on this crusade of "cruelty to animals" so they tell other people (meat eaters) that eating meat (killing animals) is wrong. And then those people (meat eaters) accuse ALL vegetarians of being holy and self righteous when only SOME vegetarians believe eating meat is wrong. Basically the stereotyping has brought the war to all.
