Iron supplements?!

Question:

Iron supplements?

is it generally reccommended that vegans take iron supplements? sometimes i worry my iron levels might be too low, since so few vegan food have all that much iron, and the ones that are known for having a lot of iron still don't really have all that much, not to mention it isn't very well absorbed.

even though too much iron can be toxic, is it generally reccommended vegans consume iron supplements?

Answers:
I've been a vegan for years and I've never really done anything extra to increase my iron intake. I've been tested several times and I've always had normal levels. I think that some people are just more prone to it than others. I've known more meat eaters to have iron deficiency anemia than I have vegetarians and vegans.

If in doubt, just take a supplement or eat lots of green vegetables and wholegrains. Also you should get your blood tested regularly to make sure all your levels are good.

I'm not sure it is recommended specifically for vegans, but I do because I've always had an iron deficiency. It's just how my body is. The next time you go to the doctor, ask him to run a blood test to check if you are low. If you do need to take a supplement, black strap mollases is the best one, very iron-rich, and easy for the body to absorb.

nope. Have you tried eating spinach? The nutrition experts don't say that anymore. Nowadays they say you get your iron from meat, fruits and vegetables which is about the same as saying you get your iron from 'food'. Big experts aren't they?
