Question about turning vegan!!!!?!
Question about turning vegan!!!!?
for the last few months i have been working towards that lovely heaven that is vegan-ess....my only guilty pleasure has been sushi....i love sushi...but today i decided that the day had come when i would give it up...my girlfriend is a sushi fanatic...if there was a sushi fan club she would be in it....she hates the idea (btw she eats the same way i do...no meat dairy eggs...just fish...
anyways...she says that we can no longer have sushi dates...which i agree is tons of fun...so...finally...my question is...should i give up sushi now and make myself a little happier or just break my eating habbit on occasion for her
(btw...i don't want cruelty to fish speeches...that is not what the question is asking)

Sure, neither of you are even vegetarian, but you're doing good things, and why not take that step into veganism... especially if you feel better for it.
:)
And you bet you can eat sushi!

Many places will accommodate your needs. People totally eat vegetarian sushi by using foods like cucumbers or avocados in the place of fish.
Oftentimes those we love aren't exactly thrilled when our partner or family member becomes vegetarian (especially straight to vegan!), and that is perfectly normal. Let her know that she is fine where she is and you will not look down on her for still eating animals. When those we love become insecure with our changes, the best thing we can do is make sure they understand that we love them and do not judge their choices.
Ask for vegetarian/vegan sushi, during a time when the restaurant is not busy. They will let you know what is up.

I don't see why it has to be a sushi date. Why not make it something else? You say that vegan-ess is "heaven". Isn't it worth giving up a food? It's just food, after all. I don't think you will miss it all that much after you make the transition. Is there a "fake" sushi substitute?
I don't think you should give up what you believe in because of your girlfriend. if your all for vegen, go for it. maybe you should talk to your girlfriend about it. if she really loves you, she;ll support this decision
Going vegan is not healthy. Your body won't get complete protein. Don't give up something that you love. Keep eating your sushi and feel good about it!
give it up now, you will feel better knowing you have cut all cruelty out of your diet. believe me, i felt the same a you, i love sushi! but i just finally stopped denying that eating it was contributing to the fishes pain, suffering and the over exploiting of the oceans. and i stopped so i know you can too :)
Why couldn't you continue your sushi dates and select your meal from a variety of vegetable rolls? We have a close group of friends of varying degrees of vegetarian and vegan - a good sushi place is the one thing we can always agree on for dinner and satisfying for all.
Make vegan sushi, not all of it has to have fish as I'm sure you know. Check out some of these sites.
You don't have to give up sushi. There's different types of sushi. My favourite is nori (seaweed) wrapped around sticky rice and a slice of cucumber with a tiny (and I mean TINY!) amount of wasabi. MMMMM.. delish!
Why on Earth would you want to be a vegan or a vegetarian? It's the most asinine and ridiculous decision you could make. For one, women dont respect a guy who wont eat a steak, second, it is not healthy for you. You said yourself, you love sushi.... so why give it up? Makes absolutely no sense. Dont forget we are animals too.
You people make me sick. I didn't climb to the top of the food chain to pass up a thick, hearty red steak. You need to eat meat to live a healthy life. True vegan's are nasty and skin and bones. Their skin tone and body's are not very attactive. Do you people really think the animal know's what the hell is even going on??? I'm a rancher with a cow/calf operation. This is my business and my livelyhood and I would not pass it up or give it up for anything.
Why do you have to give up sushi if your almost vergan?? You can do veggie sushi...my mom who is Japanese makes all kinds of veggie sushi and it rocks....
if you want to be a dedicated vegan, then be vegan. It is a choice you have to make for yourself, not let someone else make it for you.
I don't understand the mean comments aimed at those wishing to follow or not follow a vegan diet. It is their choice to eat the way they want. I am not vegan and don't wish to be. That is my choice and I don't believe we should enforce our beliefs on others. I believe that animals were put here on this earth for our nourishment as well as plants were. If humans were not eating the animals, wouldn't they eventually die of overpopulation and disease anyways? The animals would overrun the land and eat the vegetation. Then nobody would win, it is all about balance.
Bottom line: It's your choice, you do what you feel is right for you.
just eat what makes you happy
your not on this earth for every long so eat what you want! :)
My family is vegan, and we eat it all the time. We eat it at restaurants and make it at home; just made it this week twice.
There are lots of vegan sushi choices at any sushi restaurant. My favourite it the inari sushi, kappamaki sushi, ... well, just ask at the restaurant and they'll point them out or make them for you. I usually see something and say, "can I have that but made with avocado instead?"
If you make it at home, you can use Veganaise for mayo, and the ingredients inside, use your imagination... tofu, natto, any garden veggies, sauerkraut, pickles, whatever... if you ask me, it's more fun at home because there's a lot more variety than at the restaurant, and we use much higher quality ingredients at home too.
Eat california rolls. Hope thiis helps and have a great day!

This is my opinion. I am vegan, and I LOVE sushi. I usually get the Avacado, Cucumber, and carrots roll. There are also sweet potato rolls, "dragon rolls" where it is rolled in slices of avacado...God it makes me want sushi just thinking about it. I would say, continue with your diet, and continue to LOVE sushi!
There have been some great suggestions and links here re: veggie sushi, so why not learn to make your own? You can then have your sushi dates at home (with or without friends) and a wide variety of sushi, at far less cost. Your girlfriend can have what she likes, and so can you. (Warning: Sushi parties can make you very popular.)
Here's another recipe: There's a tuna substitute called "Tuno" which can be found in health food stores. I've heard the canned stuff is ghastly, but that the frozen is very good. What follows is a recipe which uses it. You can omit or add whatever appeals to you. Sushi is very flexible.
Tuno Sushi Rolls
From Chef Deb on Vegsource.com
Sushi Rice (recipe below)
toasted nori sheets
Tuno -- cut into thin strips (vegan fish substitute)
shredded carrot
shredded cucumber
umeboshi plum paste -- optional
mashed or shredded avocado -- optional
freezer paper -- wax paper, or a sushi rolling mat
SAUCE:
1/2 cup soy sauce
3 tablespoons mirin (I just use sherry - s.)
1 tablespoon sugar
Put a sheet of freezer paper, wax paper, or rolling mat in front of you. Put a sheet of nori on this. Dip your hands in water. Take some sushi rice, and spread it out on the nori, leaving about 2" bare at the top.
Arrange some Tuno, carrot, and cucumber in a horizontal line, about 1/3 of the way up the rice. If desired, spread a bit of umeboshi paste alongside the cucumber line. If desired, add some avocado.
Lift up the paper or mat, and carefully use it to roll up the nori, rice, and fillings, like a jelly roll. As the roll begins to form, you can use your hands to continue the rolling (without the paper or mat). When you get to the bare part, wet the bare part with water, and roll the roll closed, sealing it well.
Put the roll on a plate, and let it stand a few minutes, to dry. Make all the rolls this way, or vary the fillings in some. Dip a sharp, serrated knife in water. Carefully cut the sushi rolls into 3 or 4 pieces. Set them upright on a plate. The fillings will be visible.
For sauce: Cook this mixture over low heat, stirring constantly, until slightly thickened. Let cool.
Serving Ideas : Serve with the sauce, Wasabi, prepared and/or Hot Chinese mustard, in small bowls.
NOTES : If Tuno is not available, use flavored Tofu.

Sushi Rice
From Chef Deb
2 cups raw short-grain rice
3 1/4 cups water
MIXTURE:
5 teaspoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup rice vinegar -- plus
2 tablespoons rice vinegar
Bring to rice & water to boil, then turn down to simmer. Simmer, covered, for 20 minutes. Turn off heat. Let stand for 5 minutes. Scoop rice into a large, flat plate.
Mix sugar/salt/vinegar thoroughly, and slowly pour the mixture over the rice. While you are pouring, stir and fluff the rice gently with a wooden or plastic rice paddle or a wooden or plastic spoon. Make sure each grain of rice is coated.
To give the sushi rice an authentic shiny appearance, fan the rice while fluffing. Let rice cool.
NOTE: Allow more cooking time if using brown rice.
Well, if you want a vegan diet, than I would ditch the sushi dates. Yes, it may be fun to go out and eat with your friends, but there are options. (A friend and I have salad dates together!) Fish isn't good for you anyway. It thins your blood and has been linked to colon cancer. PLUS it has mercury in it.
I say, forget the fish, save Flounder :D
Good luck!
I know it's hard, but if you have given up everything else, you can do it!!!!!
:D
Japanese food is one of the easiest to do vegan. Not only are there all the veggie sushi but there are a ton of other noodle dishes, rice dishes, soups, tofu dishes, etc... Most of it is soy based. Enjoy.
