How do I get my school to become more veg friendly?!

Question:

How do I get my school to become more veg friendly?

If you want to get a full lunch they make you get a milk and don't allow a juice or water in place of it. They also have a poor selection of foods for vegetarians/vegans. I would just not buy the milk but they charge you for everything separate. help me please...

While some people find PETA extreme (I too think some of their tactics are a bit severe)... they DO have some VERY helpful information for stuff like this.

Go to their site and request what they have for schools. I believe they have a packet specifically to help you convince your school cafeteria to offer vegetarian alternatives (they also have one to try to get them to use disection alternatives in science labs).

Ultimately, you'll need to ask your school's principal to have a meeting with you to discuss this... but the info from PETA could help you to cover topics. Also... be sure to gather "evidence" to support your argument from other sources too... since the word PETA automatically turns off some listeners.

Good luck!

They don't care and they won't ever. You can't make people change and trying to will only stress you out. Trust me, I used to try and change people and their attitudes. You will be happier when you acept that you can't.

You should try and speak to the Principal, or someone in charge... maybe they can do something about it... if you have some other vegetarian/ vegan friends... you guys could get together and do something about it... maybe ask someone in charge if you can start a vegetarian/ vegan club kind of thing in your school so you can do something about the lack of vegetarian- friendly foods.

Or you could always pack your own lunch... they can't stop you from doing that.
Good luck.

Also... I found a USDA link about providing lunch for children with special dietary needs... Looks like it is referring more to children with special diet needs...like allergies .... but here is the link : http://www.fns.usda.gov/cnd/guidance/spe...
( You might need Adobe Reader to see this page...it's a PDF....If the link doesn't work... and you still want to read it...you'll have to download Adobe Reader.... here is the link to download it for free:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/re... )

I just skimmed through it... If you didn't read it, It says:
"Situation 6:
A child's parents have requested that the school prepare a strict vegetarian diet for their child based on a statement from a health food store "nutrition advisor" who is not a licensed physician. Must the school comply with this request?
Response:
No. The school is responsible only for accommodating those conditions meeting the definition of disability as described in 7 CFR Part 15b. Schools are not required to make food substitutions based on food choices of a family or child regarding a healthful diet."

So, I guess they don't "have" to provide you with something. But, again, if you got together with as many vegetarians as you can find...maybe you could do something about it. 2 voices are louder than one... lol... If not, like I said, you can always pack a lunch.
Maybe if you read it you could find something else about vegetarian meals... also try searching the internet for articles about schools providing lunches for vegetarians... I've seen a few... you could get some ideas of how to go about asking for more meal options from them maybe...

It's 2007 and students should make choices as to what they can eat!! How frustrating!!

I would talk to a principle. How do your parents feel about talking to the principle or writing a letter to the school board? Can you bring your own lunch and snacks mean while? PTA meetings. Something needs to be done. Let me know if you need help writing any letters to the school.

Odds are you won't be able to change this very much. The foods found in school lunch programs are typically dictated by law. Good luck getting an admin type to risk running afoul of that.

If you know other kids who are vegetarians, you guys can come up with a letter and send it to your school district. Actually you don't need to gather vegetarians you can ask all the kids. let them know how much it would benefit them to eat more fresh fruits and veggies. And they should allow you guys to have a choice of water too. Good luck let your voice be heard.

Go and make an appointment to speak with your principal. Tell them that your beliefs are very important to you, and you think that people should have a choice in what they eat at school. Just explain that more and more people are becoming vegetarian and vegan, and it is unfair to expect them to go hungry. Even offer to help plan meals. Good luck!
