Ingredients in preservatives?!

Question:

Ingredients in preservatives?

Does anyone know what are the Ingredients / Chemicals used in general preservatives? What I need to know is that usually, all of our food in supermarkets (except fresh fruits/veggies) contain 'preservatives'. And I am a vegetarian. So, I need to know that in general, do they use any animal product in the preservatives?
Thanks in advance fo the answers.

Answers:
Different companies use different things to preserve food. Also, different products also contain different preservatives. Most, or a lot of preservatives contain alcohol or are comprised mainly or completely of alcohol. Some, on the other hand, use lard(pig fat) and sometimes beef. I suggest you call each company and find out from them if you want to be sure bacause like I said, they are all different.

Fat is not a preservative, but chemicals and usually citric acid, did you know gelatin is from beef?

I know that Cheerios uses Trisodium Phosphate as a preservative. and most know that Trisodium Phosphate is a type of low sudsing detergent! However it's not as bad as putting too much salt in something for a preservative! Doctors often use soap to unbung one.. You get it if you get an enema from a Doctor! That's it Phosphate or Salt the most common preservatives.. there's others I'm sure! I asked Cheerios is their Trisodium Phosphate from animal
or plant source. They said plant locust bean gum plant!
