besides, curry, powdered cumin is good to spice up fried chicken...
I make a cold bean salad that is really good...the cumin is one of the highlight flavors! Add a little more or less to taste.
* 1 Can 15 or 16oz each: Black beans, Red kidney beans and Great Northern beans
* 1/3 Cup chopped red onion
* 2 Large cloves of garlic, finely chopped
* 1 Cup diced bell pepper (yellow adds the most color, but really any will work, depending on your preference)
* 2 Tomatoes, seeded and chopped
* 1/3 Cup chopped fresh cilantro
* 1/2 tsp. Ground cumin
* 1/4 tsp. Ground cinnamon
* Salt & freshly ground pepper to taste
* Juice of 1 lime
* 1/8 - 1/4 (scant) Cup extra-virgin olive oil
* 1/4 Cup Cider Vinegar
Mix everything together in a large bowl.
That's it! Pretty simple &; it really varies depending on what I have on hand...the cilantro, cumin & cider vinegar are what really gives it its unique flavor.
Of course, it's best if made at least a few hours ahead of time, to give the flavors a chance to blend. If refrigerating over night, it is better to bring it to room temperature before serving.
I know this really great dip...here are the ingredients:
Cumin
Tomatoes
Cucumber
Onions
Sour Cream
Cilantro
Salt & Pepper
You dice the veggies up really small, add the sour cream(160z), and then add the Salt, Pepper, and Cumin to taste. Cumin can be pretty overwhelming if you add too much, so be sure to add tiny dabs at a time until you are satisfied. This dip is great eaten with any kind of Tortilla chips...or whatever else you may have in mind for dipping. Yum! Now I'm craving the dip too! Good Luck!
Lots of Indian [East Indian] dishes use cumin and other nice spices, and Indian has been the most flexible vegetarian diet I've ever tried and I love it because of that.
Try a potato recipe, cited below...
Black beans and cumin, which can you serve over rice.
Drain and rinse a can of black beans. IN a medium non-stick frying pan, pour 1 tbsp olive oil and put on medium. Saute 1 clove of minced garlic and stir for a few seconds. Add beans, salt, and ground pepper to taste. Add about 1/2 cup water and turn up heat, cooking beans for several minutes. Add 1-2 teaspoons cumin and stir.
Garnish beans with several tablespoons of chopped cilantro and serve over rice. You can also put corn, and/or salsa on this.
I make great, easy meals with Cumin at home- and on a very small budget. I just toss raw chicken or turkey breasts (turkey tastes really nice with the cumin since it is a darker meat) with:
4 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp minced garlic or so
1-2 tbsp cumin (depending on taste)
1-2 tsp lime juice
then marinate overnight and bake at 375...i also squeeze lime juice over the whole mess right before it goes into the oven. the lime and cumin complement each other really well...and the black bean salads from other answers make a nice, full meal! (had it for a great warm-weather meal last night)
chile is one of the best known ways to use cumin.
I combine Cumin and Ground Corriander for Mexican dishes which can be as cheap as refried beans or expensive as fish tacos (which can still be very cheap) and the results are always a success
Be Fearless - the key to good cooking
I put cumin in almost everything I cook. I put a pot of beans on and add the cumin at the same time with the beans. Or get a pan and dry roast them, then crush them and sprinkle on anything you think it would taste good with. Or you can get hot oil and make a chanch. When they are fat and golden put the oil with seeds in any dahl, soup, beans, fried or steamed vegetables, or salad dressing. After dry roasting and crushing, you can sprinkle on potatoes or anything.
