Vegan Parents Only....Help Help?
As Vegan parents how do you raise a new born child to be a vegan? Recently a couple in Atlanta was givin life in prison because their 6 week old child passed away because of a vegan lifestyle of the parents. What do u do in a situation like this? I know its not fair for the parents to get life in prison considering their are rapists and murders walking the streets everyday.

Babies absoluetly need formula. End of story. My baby is on lactose free soy formula. You can't get much more vegan that than. Some soy milks are fortified for children, he will be drinking those instead of cows milk when he is 1 year old. He also eat purees fruits and vegetables, and baby barley and rice cereal. He is vegan, and he is super, super chunky, lol. Very healthy baby, 98% percientile on everything, and doctor says he is perfectly healthy.
It isn't hard to keep him healthy, you just need an understadning of the nutritional needs of a child. Those people clearly did not. They might be vegan, but they were not adequate caregivers.
they got what they DESERVED. they MURDERED their child, because they are idiots.
You breast feed your child for a Minimium of 6 months then move to a full normal diet. You dont force vergan on them, you let them choose as they grow up. So if they want burgers and steak give it to them.
I think the only way to properly ( and healthily) raise a vegan baby is to breastfeed for at least 3 years to ensure child gets enough fats they would ordinarily get from milk or formula, I would suggest maybe starting vegan food at about 4 or 5, even if it is against your lifestyle you don't want to hurt your baby. They need fats and calories that aren't available to vegans.
Humans are not built to be vegans. If an adult wants to eat that way it is fine by me but a child will probably have some degree of undernourishment which will lead to growth problem. Infants need animal fat (human milk or some other mammal substitute) to grow.
Under normal circumstances a vegan lifestyle would not affect a 6 week old. 6 week old babies are always either exclusively breastfed (preferable) or formula fed or a combination of the two. So I something else besides veganism was going on there.
I haven't heard of this matter but a vegan life style in it's self should not affect a newborn if the mother is properly taking care of herself and nursing her baby like she should. An interesting site to check out is: www.thegardendiet.com
The couple have 3 kids I think and the whole family is raw vegan. If you know what types of food to eat and how to rotate your foods I think it could work but not everybody is capable of doing this.
I hope this site helps answer some of your questions!
Well first of all - yes you breastfeed the baby. I mean seriously - I can't imagine it! Stupid idiots!
But you CAN raise your child as a vegas once you start introducing normal foods - it takes time and care... and personally I think that VEGAN is a way to go once the child is grown. Vegetarian is good and well - especially since you can get free range and organic milks, eggs, and this sort of thing. I mean - chickens HAVE unfertilized eggs and if they aren't crammed in cages... what the heck is the problem?
The key is though for VEGAN babies - and the Vegan lifestyle at ANY age - it is tough! It isn't something you just do - you have to maintain balance in your diet and know what you are doing! But with education it can be done.
I think that those parents deserved to go to jail. It's not like malnourishment and failure to thrive just HAPPEN. This is a process where you can tell your child isn't doing well. So I don't understand how you just let your baby die!
At 6 weeks every child should be a vegan. That's because at 6 weeks, that child should be getting nothing but breast milk. Yes, that's vegan. That's human milk being fed to a human.
This child didn't die because the parents were vegan, but because the parents were stupid.
A child's first solid foods should be single-grain cereals, mixed with breast milk, and introduced one at a time. As it's appropriate, you add one vegetable at a time, that you cook at home and puree. You gradually add other pureed veggies, pureed fruits, pureed beans, etc and work up to combining foods as meals, and then to solid foods.
This is the same as omnivore parents, except without the animal products. And yes, done properly, a vegan diet is not only healthy for a child of any age, but much healthier than is an omnivore diet.
What about people who die because of meat poisioning or diseases caused by meat eating? Everyone dies including Vegans. The case should be investigated closer and broader. Breast feeding is best for new borns. Keep them warm, love them, eat extra well. Find other Successful Vegans who have raised their children nicely. I know someone who is vegan and the one year old is fat and strong and another is on its way!
whether is it plant- or meat-based diet, the most important is to have a balanced diet.
For newborns (up to 6mths), the best food is breastmilk from Mum. Hey, humans are mammals.
Daily Nutrient for Childhood:
Last I checked, all nutrients that a growing child need can be obtained from non-animal sources.
Vit A (carrots, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, winter squashes, cantaloupe, pink grapefruit, apricots, broccoli, and spinach)
Vit B (fortified cereals, pasta, whole grains, dried beans, peas, and soybeans, dairy products, nuts, legumes)
Vit C (citrus fruits and their juices, strawberries, tomatoes, broccoli, turnip greens and other greens, sweet and white potatoes)
Vit D (made by our body when we exposed to sun)
Vit E (wheat germ, corn, nuts, seeds, olives, spinach, asparagus, and other green leafy vegetables, vegetable oils)
Vit K (cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, soybeans, and cereals)
Folate (green, leafy vegetables)
Biotin (dairy products, whole-grain cereals, legumes, broccoli and other vegetables in the cabbage family)
Calcium (soybean, spinach, kale)
Chloride (tomatoes, lettuce, celery, olives)
Chromium (green pepper, apple, banana, spinach)
Copper (mushroom, sunflower seed, peanuts)
Iodine (asparagus, mushrooms, seaweed, sesame seeds)
Iron (spinach, kidney beans, tomato puree, chickpeas)
Magnesium (bran, cashew, pinenuts, soybeans, various nuts, brown rice)
Manganese (apple, apricot, barley, green leafy vegetable, oats, raisins)
Molybdenum (dark green leafy vegetable, barley, buckwheat, sunflower seed)
Phosphorus (milk, yogurt, peaunt butter, rice, noodles, corn peas)
Potassium (sweet potato, prune juice, carrot juice)
Selenium (cucumber, enriched bread, rice, walnut)
Sodium (table salt, most food contain sodium)
Zinc (pumpkin, beans, nuts, wholgrain)
By the way, humans are omnivores. this means they eat both plants and animals, but do not mean that they MUST eat both to survive.
This baby was not killed by a vegan diet; this baby was killed by murders. Even the judge knows they used veganism as a scapegoat to get out of going to jail.
These parents thought they could get away with it because they know that most meat eaters (and therefore most of the general public) are completely ignorant when it comes to veganism, and that said public, (without any research whatsoever) will believe that veganism is terrible and kills people. That general public is represented quite well by all the answerers at the top of the page.
Would a meat eater feed a baby nothing but apple juice and cow's milk? Of course not, because it is understood that cow's milk is not a substitute for a balanced diet. All vegans know quite well that soy milk is a substitute for cow milk, not formula. And if they ever were not sure, they could read the big label on each container of soy milk that specifically states that it is not to be used as a formula for infants. And these "vegan" parents knew that quite well when they murdered their baby.
I am putting vegan in parentheses because just as someone would not be a vegan if they intentionally killed a cow, someone is not vegan if they intentionally kill a baby or any other human. Vegans believe in life and the right to life for all, not death.
At least the judge was educated enough to see beyond their ridiculous excuse. Apparently he understands that there are tons of people all over the world who were raised vegan since birth.
My family is all vegan, my kids too. No, I don't need to force them to eat their food, they love it and eat more than me sometimes. Those two weirdos who's child died, well, I have read various reports about the case, none are very detailed, but is seems the parents were not feeding their child properly -- not breastfeeding, but didn't want to use that horrible formula stuff from the store, they didn't know of any other alternatives... why they weren't breastfeeding I do not know. Children die from the very poor or very excessive diets their parents give them, but feeding your kid junkfood is not a crime, yet.
Our first was breastfed exclusively for at least 8 months, then we slowly started introducing (non sugary non fruit etc.) foods, like steamed turnip and other root vegetable that become very soft when steamed. No seasoning, nothing -- their digestion is still developing. No processed foods until they are much much older, say two years old or older. Breast feeding continued until about 2yrs or so. Eventually they don't want to breastfeed anymore and it becomes more of a snack or cozy time with mama. Just think very unprocessed foods, very simple, no sugar, salt, sauces, and very slowly introduce more robust foods. Congee is very good (Chinese rice soup) as this is easy to digest and what is fed children in China as their first cooked food. You know what, here are two very good books to read, Macrobiotic Pregnancy and Care of the Newborn, and Macrobiotic Family Favorites. These are really two great books on raising healthy children.
