How many people do you know who are vegan? Do you think it is catching up?
Answers:
My best friend is vegan, my roommate is vegetarian (but eating vegan currently because I stock the fridge), my brother is struggling to be vegetarian in a less-veg-friendly town, and I know over a dozen other vegans in my area, not counting the hundred or so at the nearby temple who are for religious reasons.
Yes, I think the more people see normal, healthy vegans around, the more comfortable they will be with the idea and possibly adopt it themselves. I went from being vegetarian to vegan because before meeting my best friend, I knew the dairy and egg industry could be cruel, but didn't consider the extent of it (like how inextricably linked veal and dairy is), and tried to ignore it because though I didn't like it, I felt like it was too difficult and would probably make me sick to change my diet even more.
But then I met this guy who had been vegetarian since age 3 and vegan since age 5, was incredibly healthy and happy, and had no problems whatsoever cooking delicious vegan food for himself. So with his help, I've gradually weaned myself off of animal products (replacing some of my favorite stuff with analogs) because he was proof it was quite feasible.
So while we might not reach people who simply don't care, I hope I can at least inspire vegan-hopefuls to follow their heart instead of worrying and making excuses. I think in the next century veganism will snowball.
Hmm.. I know zero vegans. I wish there were a lot more, but unfortunately, it's not catching on as quickly as I would like.
I know 7 vegetarians and one person who rarely eats meat/fish. I do think it is catching up, good good! :)
I know 1, its important for people to know that if they decide to become a vegan they still need certain nutrients my friend has to take a bunch of vitamins or whatver to live that lifestyle, i guess talk to a doc. or dietitian if you make that move, i think more and more people are swinging that way maybe not total vegetarian but cutting a lot more of the meat intake
Boy, I need to live where some of you people live.
I know 1 vegan, and he is my boyfriend.
I was in a class once with a vegan, but he was a butthead. There is currently a vegetarian in my class, but he is very shy.
My mom and I became vegetarian at the same time, and I am acquaintances with two other vegetarians. I live in the middle of farm country, Ohio, so there aren't a lot of vegetarians/vegans.
I know a few, we run a Veggie guest house and about 25% of our guests are vegan.
The breakdown is:
veggie - 50%
vegan - 25%
meateaters - 25%
It is getting more popular, yes.
just me :( but i know two vegetarians. i wish there were more vegans! i don't think it is catching up, tough i do think its expanding
don't know any thank god
I personally know two vegans, five vegetarians, including my husband and son, and two former vegetarians. I've met countless other vegetarians and vegans come through my line at Trader Joe's. I'll notice the food they buy is meatless, so I'll inquire.
More people are becoming aware of the health, environmental and animal-compassionate benefits of a meat-free lifestyle, and some are committing to it everyday. Will it ever get to the point where everyone or a huge percentage (say like 70-80%) of the global popualation will abstain from animal products? Probably not. But one can still hope!
