What is Tofu?!
What is Tofu?
I'm interested in becoming vegeterain and I noticed alot of diets contain tofu.
What exactly is it?
What does it taste like?
What recipes can you make with it?
Answers:
"Bean curd" doesn't sound very good, but actually it is very tasty. Sure, some companies' tofu doesn't taste so good, and others taste really great. There's also your personal technique of using it in recipes etc. Plain, it tastes like soy-milk, because that's what it is. Coagulated soy milk. Basically, head to a Chinese restaurant (one where Chinese people eat) and order some tofu dishes to see what's possible and what it tastes like in a stir fry, deep fried, as a dessert, in soup, preserved, marinated,...
The best tofu I've has so far is from the Soya Nova Tofu Shop's West Coast Smoked Tofu

There are different types of tofu soft, medium, firm. Usually medium is best for us as we just chuck it into our stir fry. do we use it in baking etc. and make weird desserts etc. Very rarely. It's just so easy to throw into whatever you are making that it's too much trouble to do anything fancy with it.
What recipes can you use it with... well, 1000s, but I just keep it simple and stir fry it and put it on top of my veggies, or rice, or spaghetti, noodles, or whatever I'm eating. Basically, it's from China, so it's good to learn from a good Chinese cook. In Japan they have taken food to a different direction and instead of making 1000s of different things with tofu, they keep food as simple as possible and just eat things either plain or very lightly flavoured, say tofu with soy sauce and nothing more.
Its bean curd.
It tastes like cardboard.
Stir frys etc.
?bean curd: a soft food with no particular flavour made from soya milk curd pressed into a cake
?tasteless

Enjoy! (--,)
Many diets contain tofu because it is such a versatile food, and is especially good for replacing meat in dishes, but is by no means necessary to being vegetarian.
Tofu is bean curd, coagulated soy milk. It can taste anywhere from really beany to flavorless, and you can pick out different brands and styles if you're good at that sort of thing.
What you can make depends on tofu type. Examples:
extra firm - stir fries and meat replacements
firm - scrambles, some curries, or to replace ricotta cheese
soft - dips, some curries
silken - miso soup, or to replace cream cheese
There are really hundreds though...it's up there with flour for useful ingredients to have around the house.
