Hmm, looks like you've already made your decision by the tone of your question!
How much of this "vegan parents = bad parents" crap do we have to tolerate on here! Don't you people know how to form your own opinions based on logic!?
Vegan parents are parents like everyone else. Do you know how many vegan and vegetarian parents there are in the world? Do you know how many Hindu parents are vegetarian? Do you know how many Hindus there are in India? How many vegetarian Buddhist parents?
These malnutrition vegan/vegetarian stories are seriously rare. The only reason we get to hear so much about them is because with all the scares going on regarding meat-eating being linked to stomach disease, heart disease etc, they feel they have to crucify vegetarianism in the public eye... because the meat industry seriously has so much to lose (and WILL lose... you'll see in time).
It is the responsibility of any parent to investigate their child's eating habits and act accordingly. The baby died because it had bad parents. It didn't die because it had vegan parents.
Just like thousands of children each year are abused, sexually abused and neglected by meat eating parents. If you want to draw a conclusion with this scenario of 'veganism killed a baby', then please draw a conclusion with meat-eating parents raping and murdering children. Sounds like nonsense, agreed? Yes! As are the suggestions on here that veganism and malnutrition go hand in hand.
If anything, you could say that given the nature of veganism (respect for all living things), that a baby bought up by vegans is more likely to be cared for.
This kind of "tar you all with the same brush" garbage is so lame. This is the kind of mentality that creates prejudice. I suppose you think all Muslims are Al-Qaeda? That all Hindus are like Apu from the Simpsons? That all feminists are lesbians?
As a seriously healthy, strong vegan, I don't tar all overweight meat-eaters with the same brush. I don't look at meat-eaters and think they're all the same. People are individual, and individually make mistakes.
I'm supposing you're reporting on parents who tried to feed their child a vegan diet, but didn't know how to do it right, and the child died of malnutrition.
Murder, my friend, is defined as taking a life actively with malice and forethought. It's not first-degree murder if (a) you did it accidentally or through negligence (b) you really didn't want to harm the person (c) you didn't plan it.
So should they be convicted of murder? That's for the jury to decide, but the burden of the prosecution should include proving intent, malice, and forethought beyond a reasonable doubt.
Seems to me, not familiar with all the facts of the case, that it would be a hard burden, and rather likely that the conviction would be a lesser charge--say, 2nd degree manslaughter, acknowledging unintentional death through negligence.
As for the sentencing, if it is murder, then perhaps execution would be appropriate. If not, life with eligibility for parole after a decade or two (why should society continue to support them after they are no longer a demonstrable threat to society?). If man 2, then a shorter sentence or even probation is in order--
We lock people up primarily so they can't hurt others (doesn't always work); the question to ask in sentencing is whether these two are likely to kill another child in the same way.
As for forcing them to eat meat, nobody should force anyone to eat things they abhor. And people should remain polite and resist the urge to comment on others' personal dietary choices.

all these children are healthy
I know what your referring too. Well for one, a baby cannot survive on regular milk and apple juice either. But many babies can survive off soy FORMULA. The parents were just stupid, not vegan. Second, nobody feeds a baby meat, period. You should get a life sentence for choking your baby with a steak. Little babies only eat formula, breast milk, and maybe a little rice milk or juice.
Um second, If you kill them, they cant eat meat. And omnivore parents sometimes malnourish their children too.
death penalty
There isn't a single thing wrong with raising kids veg if you aren't a moron.
Try doing web-searches on "starved baby +vegan" and "starved baby -vegan" and look at the different amounts of hits you get! With the first search I get over 1,400,000 hits, on the second I only get 56,000. By adding "-atlanta" to the "+vegan" search the number drops to 38,000 and most of those hits are STILL about this ONE idiotic couple.
Please note that EVERY single new article about this case is based on two reports filed by ONE AP reporter named Greg Bluestein. Even all the Atlanta media outlets are using his reports as the basis of their stories. That's very odd considering the large amount of hype this case is getting!
In any event based on the SLIM amount of information we have, it appears that this is a "Twinkie Defense" case (look it up)!
The 'mother' apparently had the baby in her grandmothers bathtub and then never had the child examined by medical people until after it died. The parents apparently never tried to breastfeed (which IS vegan) and were only feeding the child one standard bottle of liquids per day.
I'm opposed to the death penalty in most cases since I prefer criminals spend a long time rotting in prison and that applies here.
Vegetarian Breakast as we know it is about the easiest thing there is to cook. I used to teach Culinary Arts and breakfast was always so fun since many people find it challenging.
Eggs, over easy, hard, sunny side up or however are simple, you need: eggs, non stick 7 in skillet, oil ( i only use olive oil) use medium high heat, add oil, when hot, add eggs, flip if you like, for over easy or hard firm, you can add a bit of water and a lid ! practice makes perfect. Eat fresh fruit too! Cut and orange into 4 or grapes for garnish! Serve with toast. Da Chef
They should get the death penalty for cruelty to a innocent baby.No one gives juice to a tiny baby..God have mercy on their tormented souls....
I hope *you* die a long, painful death. Cheers
The parents being vegan had nothing to do with it. The child suffered from malnutrition because of a very unbalanced diet. It can happen to non-vegan people just the same.
Do you think Nestle corporation should get the death penalty for giving infant formula to women in third world countries so their breast milk dries up and then they HAVE to buy formula--but the women can't afford it-- and then they mix what formula they get with water--and then the kids are malnourished and die...
Leave the stupid vegans alone and stick it to the evil corporations. Have you seen the Walmart video about how the people making clothes in China for Walmart work 16 hour days with one day off a week? Do you buy $#!T at Walmart? $3/day! How many hours do you work?
Keep looking at yourself, Read Satya Magazine and see how kids are used as slave labor to pick cotton for your clothes. Are you buying fair trade coffee and chocolate? If you aren't, then you are promoting slavery and inadvertantly killing people who's country grow stuff for the world while their own people starve. We are all murderers, even the vegetarians. Wake up and stop pointing at other's faults.
If you read the story past the headline, you will learn (from the PROSECUTING Attorney) that the vegan diet and beliefs were an excuse the couple tried to use as a defense. They simply DID NOT FEED THE CHILD, period. Yes, they deserve to be locked up.
So sad. That baby wasn't even old enough to be eating solids. Vegan or not. It should have been on breast milk or formula. I am a vegan, and I think this really has nothing to do with veganism, but child neglect. Plain and simple. I know alot of healthy vegan babies, tots, kids, teenagers, and adults. These people neglected their child and happened to be vegan. It's very sad. It shows an illness in our society, and a lack of resources for parents. Instead it has been made into a vegan witch hunt. Go figure.
I think what we are forgetting here, this is not about vegan lifestyle, it is about horrific child abuse and neglect. I have seen parents not understand when their children are sick, but completely ignoring the standards and care that goes into taking care of an infant? Come on!!! If they were so health concerned what happened to breastfeeding??? When an infant wastes aways for six weeks, not seen by a physician, not cared for, yes, I am all for the life sentence. I wish more judges would come down as hard as this one did.
