A question about vegetables for food / or vegetarian opinion?!
A question about vegetables for food / or vegetarian opinion?
What makes it ok to eat a vegetable and not an animal? they are both living things,
And whats your opinion on all the pesticides , herbicides , and fertilizers that are used to raise vegetables?
Those things have a impact on the environment , the runoff kills fish , kills bugs and invertibrates , affects birds and other animal reproduction . Not to mention farming affects wildlife habitat to an extent

well Beebs I do happen to be past the first grade and it amazes me how you think hydroponics are organic? Just what do you do with the chemical water from your hydro system? And if you grow an organic outside garden what fertilizer do you use if you dont use some animal products? I have raised many acres of crops and know just a little bit about it and what it takes to do it.
I didnt come on here being a smart *** I was just asking opinions I dont need to justify anything I do . Why did you assume I was trying to have a "logical argument" What logic is there in arguing?
Thanks for the couple of decent answers so far

hey Babe...... I'll have the fillet Mignon...... (med rare) skewered venison..... (nicely soaked in some sauce barbecued to perfection, baked potato, WITH BACON, that's what I'm having what are you gonna have....
I think people can justify eating vegetables better to themselves b/c it isn't often that a carrot smiles when you pet it behind the ears. Perhaps they consider that since a vegetable has no heart, ( soul?) or whatever.
Whats with the vegetarians who eat fish?
Yes production of vegetables has a large impact on the surrounding environment but that can't be the argument against it, the environmental impact of raising livestock is detrmental as well.
To each their own but everyone should know why they act the way they do and I guess in this case be ready to defend it...
If you are past first grade, you would have learned that plants have no central nervous system, no brain, no nerve endings and no ability to feel pain. You would also know that the plant does not die when it gives up its produce-it just keeps on producing it. I grow organic vegetables year round in both indoor hydroponic and outdoor gardens, and have never heard one of my plants wince in pain. I use no pesticides, herbicides or animal poop. You really should quit trying to justify eating dead animals by saying plants are bad for the environment-its not a logical argument. By the way, how much of those plants and grains do you suppose those meat animals eat to get heavy enough for slaughter? Enough to end world hunger.....
Animal cruelty is not my reason for eating vegetarian, so both being living things is immaterial. We have to eat something.
Eating meat has a larger impact on the environment - even if you don't address the other issues, it takes much more land to grow a pound of usable animal protein than a pound of usable vegetable protein - and the difference is an order of magnatude (i.e. approx 10 times as much). That makes animal protein very wasteful any way you look at it. I choose not to add to that. Eating no meat means that we have to farm less land - therefore affecting far less habitat, far less environment.
I'm not comfortable about the ways we grow our food, but I'm also aware that not all pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers are bad. I'm very concerned about petroleum based fertilizer. I generally opt for organic but not always. We can have a big impact by not only eating vegetarian, but focusing on food that is in season locally - just say no to the strawberries in November.
The way I look at it without using all our brains, it is much safer NOT to eat animals and dairy products! Period, the end, there I said it!
vegetables may be "alive", but they do not have a heart, lungs, eyes, etc. they are not sentient beings like animals are.
i don't believe in the conventional farming methods used these days. that's why i purchase all my produce and veggies organic... with the exception of mushrooms (the only shrooms that come organic are shitake... and those taste like ish to me). i believe these toxic chemicals put in conventional foods lead to disease. it's simply not natural to put pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and all the other -cides in our body!
everything has an impact on the environment today. i know that what my family and i do might not even change the world, but hey, at least we're trying to do our part! we use energy efficient lightbulbs, drive a honda civic, recycle, and do not eat any animal.
best wishes.
Vegetables have no central nervous system which would scientifically imply they cannot feel pain. For me, I believe that all animals have a spirit, and I do not believe in killing things with a spirit.
I hate all the chemicals used to raise vegetables, I believe it's not only bad for the environment, but terrible for consumers as well. I buy organic or locally grown vegetables when I can.
I see it as you kinda have to pick and choose your battles. To me, the environmental effects of the meat industry far outweigh the bad of chemical farming. Hopefully one day, we will reach a time where things are naturally done, and there is minimal environmental damage.
I'm probably going to be disqualified by some of the respondents, because I am not a pure vegetarian. I also eat fish (protein you know!) eggs, and cheeses.
I guess I just really like vegetables best. They taste good, come in so many varieties and there are so many ways to eat them, cooked or raw.
I remember eating hot dogs years ago, and the greasy feel I got on my tongue and the roof of my mouth. Never get that with a carrot! Hopefully, you will get some kinder answers and find what you are looking for.
The vegetarian diet isn't for everyone. So just eat what you like. In moderation, I think most diets can be made healthy
