Write to them and stop buying thier cow filled junk. Thats the only way they will listen.
I wrote to them Monday, got a waffle corporate reply. Since then they have set up an auto reply to veggies so they can't even be bothered with our business.
Keep way from masterfoods, it the only language they will understand.
They are only making this change to allow them to have more suppliers of rennet. Apparently Masterfoods are incapable of securing a decent supply of veggie rennet when many other mass-food manufacturers are quite capable of such management. I guess they cannot be bothered.
Did you see thier comments about "strict" and "non-strict" vegetarians. laughable
Its a shame that some of the other "veggie" replies here think that its still ok...and they haven't enabled email so we can't help them AARRHH.
Katie G ( below) is slightly wrong in that vegetarians do not eat cheese with animal rennet in it.
And it was in fact one of the arguements used by Mars. Do you work for them ? Its NOT true that vegetarians eat cheese with animal rennet it, simply not true. Vegetarians will check the source of rennet in cheese and only buy cheese that has vegetable rennet in it. often we use the "suitable for Vegetarians" label to confirm to us where the rennet comes from.
Anyone who doesn't check this is not really a veggie, they are using guesswork.
40% of UK cheese now uses vegetable rennet and labelled as "suitable for vegetarians". Why do you think that is ? Its because us veggies will not buy cheese ( and chocolate) that has animal rennet in it.
Not much, most of them sucked anyway! Come on you Dime Bar!
It sucks
I do eat chocolates, milkyway and maltesers.
What, is there all of the sudden meat hidden in there?
I think you mean the regular candy, which has gelatine in it made from bones. I don't eat that a lot anyway, but you can't win them all, eh?
i had no idea we couldnt....
Mars is now putting rennet in it's chocolate bars, so vegetarians should avoid - bounty, snickers, twix, and galaxy.
Also Kit-kats will contain animal products....
Why are they doing that when they must know there are more vegetarians than ever before.....
It's the ingredient gelatine in sweets they can't eat. I'm not aware there is any of that in chocolate! Maybe I'm wrong?
More for me....mmmmmmmm....chocolate!
Seriously - if they can make it without (and it tastes good!) why change to making it with?! Surely it is going to have a negative impact on their sales - but at least it has been well publicised so vegetarians are aware.
i need to lose weight anyway LOL
I am Veggie so its a good job i dont like/eat chocolate anyway...... give me a cheese board any day!
Im just curious if the vegetarians who are shocked by this news are cheese eaters as well. Rennet is found in most cheeses.
Rennet. Rennin.
Enzyme from calves' stomachs. Used in cheese-making, rennet custard (junket), and in many coagulated dairy products. Alternatives: microbial coagulating agents, bacteria culture, lemon juice, or vegetable rennet.
Perhaps those who do eat cheese were not aware. I hope this sways your cheese eating decisions in the future. :)
*edit*
Michael why so defensive? I am actually a vegan, and considering many "vegetarians" think fish is vegetarian it wouldn't be that surprising to know that many are unaware of rennet being in many cheeses. I dont think there is anything wrong with informing them of that if they were unaware.
and btw not everyone lives in the uk.. :)
Ticks me off big time - I love Galaxy bars!
Having said that, I love animals more. Bet MARS think that they'll be saving money by adding rennet to the chocolate but they'll only lose loads of customers. Good - that'll teach them.
Hi! I think it's really unfair! I mean, they were fine before, and it's not necessary... It's horrible to exclude us in that way, but I guess, let's look on the bright side - at least they let the public know! I sure am gonna miss bounty and minstrels... =( Anyway thats that! xx
No big deal to me ... I don't like eating those anyway, I became vegetarian partially for the health benefits, and those don't fit into my healthy lifestyle.
I would say that it is not an intelligent business move though, and I do feel bad for vegetarians who like to eat those.
Yeah, I never even tried most of those candies you listed. The only one that I liked was twix/snickers (i think both tasted the same) but you can make your OWN. It tastes the same. Do you know how to make vegan caramel? You make caramel (go to some website to get a recipe) then set it aside, and melt some chocolate and put it around the caramel and it will harden and become a chocolate/caramel candy treat, which I think snickers pretty much was.. You can make your own alterations. Since becoming vegan, I've really become a very creative chef. It's fun coming up with veggie recipes for non-veggie things I used to eat. Get creative! Making candy can be fun and is easy and quick. You just eat stuff up and let it cool.. Pretty simple.
i think it's ridiculous, and i'm really glad that i never bought their candy anyway...mainly because the only time i buy chocolate is when i want some really really good dark chocolate like godvia or something gormet (they use fine natural ingrediants not crap like animal products just so it will cost cheaper for the company to make it like Mars and some other cheap mass production candy companies do). basically, you get what you pay for.
Man, I hate that! But, wow, I never knew that. Although I don't eat candy and chocolate's.
I never ate them anyway, I'm vegan. They were never really that good, and not healthy anyway. Vegan candy: licorice, Mamba (like Starburst) some dark chocolates, and many more..... you just have to look!
I personaly don't eat those as I'm a fuitarian, but I think its not fare to vegitarians ans vegans who do eat it. well, think of it this way, now we have more reasons to stay slim and our meat eating friends will use up that for sure. once people see the drastic difference, it might change minds =)
There are plenty of other yummy chocolates out there - all those you mentioned are not worth eating anyway - I love real chocolate. Green and Blacks is great - it's organic and fair trade as well as incredibly delicious! :-)
Honestly, who cares, the best thing would be to dunk all vegetarians into a vat of mars chocolate and eat them instead! Chocolate and meat fix all in one, and at least you will know that the meat your eating was fed on a good healthy diet.
But seriously.............vegetari... are basically all tree hugging hippies who just want to make a fuss!
WOW I did not know this new development. ICK!
wow i knew about snickers but not about all of the other stuff. here is some other stuff you have to stay away from
poptarts with frosting on them
jolly ranchers
most hard candy
skittles
jello
any thing with the word gummy in it
sugary cereals
oreos
ritz that have the fake cheese stuff in it
marshmellows
some icecream
some yohgurt
some store bought salad dressing
If they want to miss out on my money it's they're problem. Besides Green & Black's choclate i s miles better anyway.
they put bits of little cows in chocolate !!!!!!
no way.
I'm not eating any of the chocolates you listed up there ever again!
I think we should look at the positive, we can all lose a bit of weight eating less chocolate & the horrible company that will do this to animals will lose alot of custom (& hopefully alot of profits)
buy choc. that does not have this stuff in it. READ THE LABEL.
