Uh, Peta really isn't 'extreme'. Just because they throw paint up windows of people selling fur, it's hardly extreme. Imagine how much safer this world would be if all Al Qaeda did was that!?
Maybe contact the vegan or vegetarian society, or visit a vegan or vegetarian forum. Also, it may be worth speaking to Buddhist vegetarians, for a deeper philosophical/spiritual angle on animal rights.
When people argue 'against' animal rights, they're forgetting one very important thing- we are just as much animals as anyone else. Years ago, Africans didn't have rights. Women didn't have rights. People thought that because others were different in skin colour or gender, it meant they didn't have rights.
Even now, slavery exists in the world. Racism and sexism still exist in all parts of Western society.
Any human saying that animals have less rights are just ignorant. Not necessarily being hateful, just naive. Their ancestors probably felt the same about Africans. To make society work, we have to be open to logic and change. Given our connection to chimpanzees, it should be considered a crime that they are mutilated in science labs by scientists who believe in evolution.
There is a great video here about the human delusion:

try www.vrg.org. Its the vegetarian resource group and its great. don't write peta off completely, they can be hardcore but they do a lot of positive things too.
Here are some sites I found for ya, hope they help:)
