I have a neighbor who eats a lot of meat and he has been really judgemental about my vegetarian diet. I told him that chimpanzees do not eat meat and they are our closest relative (dna similarity 98.5%). He said that chimpanzees hunter for food and kill monkies and eat them???
How do I explain to him that he is wrong?
I know in my heart that eating a vegetarian diet is the way to go. Eating meat is just plain wrong.

Chimps do eat other chimps, monkeys and rodents - anything they can find or kill.
If we were meant to be vegetarian we wouldn't have teeth as we do, we'd have just a bottom row of teeth like cows.

I'm afraid he is not wrong, even if you count the use of twigs to tease small insects and grubs from holes in trees, this is still meat.
They also eat Monkeys, pigs and Antelope, but its mostly the males that do this.

If being a vegetarian is right for you, then it is the right thing to do. Just make sure you get your diet properly balanced. I have a friend who is vegan and she has been a nightmare to feed, although things are much easier now with so many good vegetarian products being available.

Even the big cats don't tear into their victims while they are still alive - they suffocate them first.

Chimps do eat meat, and all kinds of beetles and worms. They will even kill and eat one of their own when he has been ostracized from the group. So, eating meat is just plain human.

For the record, a chimpanzees diet is not primarily meat. I think we're all yet to meet a chimp who eats as much as a similar sized human on SAD (standard Amercian diet). In their complete lifetime, chimpanzees consume about a pea-sized amount of meat per day.
Stray cats going through bins will eat curry. Will eat potato skins, crisps, brussel sprouts etc- but they're carnivores. Just because chimps attack monkeys and kill/eat them, it doesn't mean that the chimp NEEDED to kill the monkey for nutrition reasons.
There are monkeys kept in zoos who are fed a mixed omnivore diet who sometimes kill resident creatures out of boredom- not to eat them, just to play.
It's nothing about nature, or what was or isn't meant to be. I like to think that the human race has evolved to the point where we can all accept logic in place of greed, that animals suffer for us to kill them for food- when vegans/vegetarians have proven time after time, test after test, that our diet is not only healthier and sustainable, but is also linked to the prevention of cancer.
So, just because a chimp eats a monkey, it doesn't mean that all apes have to do it. I like to think that the human ape has progressed to the point where it wont eat it's own excrement, but hey, chimps do things like that, why don't you follow their lead?
Anyhow, our closest ape ancestor was a vegan ape. There are frujivores, vegetarian apes etc.
