Are vegetarian sausages and bacon better for you than the meaty versions?!
Are vegetarian sausages and bacon better for you than the meaty versions?
They seem to be just as processed and fatty as the originals.

Such vexing questions, I am a confirmed and dedicated meat eater, how ever I do have many friends that are vegetarians and I do enjoy preparing vegetarian sausages for them from scratch. these do NOT include soya products, my problem with soya is that one doesnt know whether it is a GMO (frankenfood) or not and the damage done to the enviroment to grow these crops. Dursban ( a poisonous pesticide) is sprayed on the ground killing any other plant and animal if it comes into contact with it, and it has left swathes of land looking like the surface of Mars. My other problem with soya sausages is that you will find a lab technician or food technologist has determined how the sausage will look, taste (normally of nothing) and last on the shelf.
I have successfully made at home some 6 or 7 different types of vegetarian sausages, the recipes ironically came from a book dedicated to pork and beef sausages published in america called home made sausages.
Excuse the rant but I do feel that more people should be making things for themselves, finding new recipes. The sausage making days we have at home are a great deal of fun as firends are invited over and all sorts of sausages are made and the spicing and herbs added are then made for the taste of the person making them and they can be frozen and used at a later date. The ingredients are as varied as there are veggies available, some examples are mushroom and parsley sausages, leek and carrot sausages, smoked tofu sausages etc etc, if you would like more details pls e mail me.
Good luck
they maybe, but not as tasty,i'll stick to the meat
Oh for sure! Fat or not, there are so many hormones and additives that go into our meat-especially pork- that I'm amazed anybody still eats it!
No, I still don't understand this. Why would a vegetarian crave for meat flavoured substitutes?
i has its pro's and it has it's cons. it has less iron but heaps more protein and vitamins. they are equally good for you. but watch your iron levels.
Sure they are processed however they are lower in cholesterol. In fact they should be cholesterol free (only animal products contain cholesterol) and much lower in fat and oftentimes even lower in calories. Their price however is quite heavy, you can purchase the original at a fraction of the cost and get much more. However some of these products actually taste like the real thing! Morningstar has a mini corndog that is made of soy protein that tastes like a real corndog, is quite nummy.
I have had teh sausages before and ...not good...they are quite nasty. The lower fat ones (meat) are dry. I say that if you are going to eat and eat meat then just get the real thing and limit your portions.
Everything in moderation
bacon is not considered is not a vegetarian
I'm vegetarian and I never touch that pretend meat stuff. It is junk food - highly processed with little or no nutritional content.
No, they are worse. They will be missing some of the essential amino acids present in meat-based sausages. Nor will they have any vitamin B-12, an essential nutrient.
Doesn't being a vegetarian includes both the stomach and the mindset too? Why do your still crave for meat, whether it's fake or real...
it all depends on the sauce, usually they don't taste like the no-veg version, so i usually put diff. kinds of sauces
Definitely. But only because they make portion moderation so much easier by tasting terrible. With the real thing you have the danger of wanting to eat it all the time because it's so darn good. But honestly, eat what you want, just do it in moderation and mix in a little of all the other food groups and you'll be fine.
Come on, how can processed sawdust be as good as or better than a lovely Cumberland or pork and apple sausage, made from a lovely fat pig. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! Live properly, remember animals were put on the earth for man to make use of, and that includes eating them.
Yes there because they contain Soya which is good for your heart and meat contains fats which will give you cancer, high blood pressure etc...
Get into your local Tescos and buy some Quorn...
fatty? Nope. The real stuff is loaded with tons of fat and the veggie stuff is at least 40% less fat. I eat them very occassionally, which does no harm whatsoever. On the other hand, if a person loads up eating the real stuff every sunday for brunch, that's a whole weeks supply of fat in one single meal. YUCK
Depends which brands that you buy. The following are okay:
- 'Redwood Foods'
- 'Cauldron Foods'
- 'Releat'
- Quorn
squasages n yegg, mmm yea yea yea!

The real thing will always taste better, but the vegetarian is better for you.
They are just as processed, but they are much lower in fat, have no cholesterol, etc. They're not the healthiest thing on the planet for sure... but they're much healthier than the originals!
Plus... I actually like the veggie sausage links better than the original (when I ate meat). As a meat-eater, I'd inevitably bite into some nasty piece of gristle on my first bite, ruining my meal. Veggies don't have gristle, so it's all good now! I do still wish I could find a decent vegetarian bacon though... that's the only meat I really miss.
PS... Hey westie... I'd LOVE it if you could email me a recipe or two. I'd love to make my own! Your profile won't accept emails. Thanks!!
actually quorn do a variety of things sausages, ham, chicken, burger style stuff but its made of mushrooms they have mostly like 3%to10% fat well the once i have anyway so they are less fattening taste the same without murdering the poor animals it waaaaay better!
ive never seen vegetarian bacon but sausages of any kind are rubbish. meat sausages are mostly cereal with ears noses and general leftover animal bits .. maybe expensive ones from a good butcher will be ok but still using up the leftover animal bits .. veggie ones will be equally full of rubbish. in my opinion sausages and burgers etc of any kind are processed crap
of course.they dont contain the high amounts of fat, and are normally made using a soya base, which is healthy and low fat.
I don't think they are supposed to be better for you, but, they are the only options for veggies to have with mushrooms, fried bread and tomatoes!
