Why won't my mom buy me fruits or vegetables!!!?!

Question:

Why won't my mom buy me fruits or vegetables!!!?

I'm a vegetarian, and have been for about four months or so now. My mom never buys me new fruits or veggies because she says I will just waste them, which is completely and utterly untrue. So basically I have been living off the same veggies which encompasses celery, cucumber, bell peppers, carrots, onions, and frozen brocolli & green beans. I'm worried that I don't have enough variety and that it will cause me to suffer from malnutrition. She hardly ever buys fruits either, and when she does she buys the SMALLEST container possible which is only big enough for one serving.

What can I do to make her understand I don't want to eat packaged foods and such, and that I want to eat normal fruits and vegetables!! She did the groceries today and came back with only a green bell pepper, celery, cucumber and green onion. GUUUUHHHHH!

And grocery shopping with her is not an option, as she does it while I'm in school. And I can't get my own because I don't have a license.

Answers:
Sounds like a pretty good variety--I have lived off much less b/4. Ask her to buy some brown rice and whole wheat flour to make yer own bread, biscuits, pancakes, or flatbread. You should aslo be getting some leafy greens like lettuce, collards or kale and some apples. Look up some recipes and get creative in the kitchen is amazing how many different things you can make out of the same ingredients.

Veggie mom for over 9 years...

get a job, buy your own food.

You could see if she will buy you some vitamins. It sounds like she thinks you are going through a faze and wants it to end quickly.

Well, veggies and fruits are expensive. This is why she only buys the ones that she will most likely eat and are cheaper. There is not much you can do because it's her money and she's the only buying the groceries.

Sounds to me like if you have already asked her to do this and she is ignoring your request she might have a good reason? Worried about cost? Worried about you getting enough of everything you need? It is alot more costly to be a vegetarian sometimes?

if she is worried about you waisting the food then find ways to get the stuff but not have to worry about it going bad... like bags of natural frozen fruit which can have berries, mellons, peaches etc in it. If she is worried about cost look into local places where she could find veggies, fruits and nuts cheaper... If you go to www.themeatrix.com they have a link where you can find local farmers in the area. If you are a teen and just starting out as a vegetarian u should probably still be taking a multi-vitamin though.

What's your meal plan? How have you worked out a diet to get all the nutrients you need, including protein? Do you know if you're getting enough healthy calories too?

I'm assuming that if you're young enough to still be dependent on your mom for food, you're still growing, and appropriate nutrition is extremely important. Once you've done all your planning and research on how to eat a balanced and complete vegetarian diet, you can have a discussion with your mom about your dietary preferences and see if they can be accommodated.

If she can't or won't buy these special items for you, I suppose you can get a job and buy your own food (and prepare/cook it).

Look , the same thing happened to me when i turned vegetarian, when i use to eat meat , i would never eat veggies , or lots of fruits because the meat would be so filling , so you have to prove to her that you will eat all of it , fruit and vegetables do not cost a fortune so just tell her that , it does cost alot of money to be a vegetarian , i have learned that , tell her to buy you vitamins, i take them for vitamin B , but vegetables are not the only things vegetarians should eat , make sure you eat beans for good iron and protein, or even shredded wheat is good , ... or in a worse case senario ... just get a job :P .... well i hoped i helped out

Perhaps you could offer to do a few chores in exchange for veggies and fruits. Maybe mop the floor, clean the bathroom, clean the mirrors in the house, etc. Ask your mom to take you to a farmers market on a weekend-she would have fun too. I hope it works out for you.

Stop being a vegetarian. Don't do what other people in this section tell you. EAT THE MEAT!!

Why don't you just give your mom some money and a list she can't say you will waste her money if you give her your own.

My suggestion first, would be to try and sit down with your mother and ask her why she feels that you'd only waste the food she bought instead of eating it?

If you still can't get through to her, try working out a deal with her, that you'll pay for the fruits/veggies that you want that way she won't feel that she's wasting money on uneaten food.

If that still doesn't work, maybe you could have a friend drive you down to the market to get what you want or you could always bicycle/walk to your closest store and get whatever you need/want.

that sucks... I don't understand why someone wouldn't buy fruits and veggies for their kid... Your mom should be happy that you aren't chowing down on junk all day and that you actually like veggies! lol.
I know it stinks, but maybe you could get a job and buy your own food, you could always take a bus or something.
Or sit down and have a talk with her about it... maybe you can make her understand ...it wouldn't hurt to try.

I would either talk to her about it, ask another parent/guardian with you, or have your friends bring fruits/veggies from their house.
