How to 'cure' a soy allergy?!
How to 'cure' a soy allergy?
I am vegan, but I am allergic to soy protein which is somehwat of a problem. Is there a way to 'cure' yourself from a soy allergy. I have tried drinking soy milk regularly and just dealing with the reaction, and each time the reaction gets less and less svere, but it's still there. Any tips?
Answers:
As you've noticed, repeatedly exposing yourself to something you're allergic to can decrease the symptoms, but you're not doing yourself any favors. You can't see all of the reactions. You could be doing damage to your intestinal tract without realizing it. Try rice milk, almond milk, oat milk. Instead of tofu, try seitan. I believe there's a Q&A dealing with vegans allergic to soy somewhere on the website below.

no way to "cure" urself from any allergy but u can reduce the symtoms by talking to ur doctor
Do you get those symptoms when eating soy meats?I think alot of people have a problem with carragean(ingredient in soy milk),not soy.You can also look into using rice milk or almond milk instead.
Unfortunately there's not a enyzyme out there (like lactase for milk allergys) for soy. I am also allergic to soy. Anything you eat to much of you increase your chances of developing an allergy to. I would eliminate soy althogether for a few weeks and see how you feel just to make sure it is soy. You have be careful because it may be a wheat allergy also. I have both. Needless to say, there are a lot of great rice protien supplements out there and beans provide a good helping of protein. As for allergy testing goes, how are doctors supposed to determine if you are allergic to something on the inside by doing one of those allergy skin scratch test thingys on the outside. I'd consult a natruropathic doctor or a holistic medicine practitioner for this one. They will take the time to find out exactly what the problem is without stuffing you full of crazy medications.
Also, you'd probably be better off with eating raw soy beans, tempeh, or miso. Soy milk is extremely processed! As much as "health nuts" swear by it, it is actually a processed food and the natural goodness in it is broken down a lot during that processing.
I am also a veg with allergy to soy, wheat, eggs, commercial dairy, peanuts and other things. If you have been tested and show a positive for soy, you MUST avoid it at all costs. What happens with allergic response is like a cup filling up-when that cup gets full, you could have a sudden onset anaphalactic reaction, which can be fatal. There is no way to cure food allergies. Some young people eventually outgrow them, but adult onset is there for life. If you continue to eat soy, you could have a serious reaction. I know how hard it is to avoid, but it can be done. Having to avoid wheat as well is really challenging, but again, it can be done. Also, most soy in the US and UK has been genetically modified with genes from other allergens such as wheat, corn, etc., and if you continue to consume soy, you could develop allergies to other things as well.
I'm vegan too, and may be in the same boat as you. Have you tried an elimination diet? Also try just eating like Tempeh and Miso, fermented soy products are much easier to consume than things like tofu and soymilk which are processed. Soy milk should be easy to give up, my ND has me using Rice Milk, and I'm also using hemp milk and hemp protein for the fiber/protein. Also if you aren't allergic to wheat and/or gluten but just soy, it should be easy to stay vegan. You could use Seitan and other gluten products instead of tofu. Also there are some new good ricemilk icecreams that are actually good and not nasty like rice dream.
If you take soy out of your diet for a year or more and slowly bring back in non-gmo so(organic products are a great way to avoid this), your body might or might not be a ble to handle it.
Also I don't say this as beng a "cure" by any means, because you shouldn't use it as such, but foods naturally containing vitamin c is highly recomended.
It is hard to not accidently ingest soy and vitamin c works wonders! Not a supplement! Apples, homeade lemonade, bokchoy are all awesome and yummy ways to boost you immune system.
Also, rice milk can be a good alternative, though mediciny tasting!
