A Vegan Walks into a Cracker Barrel ...?!

Question:

A Vegan Walks into a Cracker Barrel ...?

Har har. Seriously though ... tomorrow night is my boyfriend's grandmother's birthday and everyone has decided to go to Cracker Barrel. I'm not one to make waves. But I've looked up some stuff on the internet and it doesn't look like I'm going to have much luck on the menu tomorrow night. Can anyone personally recommend something that might not be on the menu, or isn't on their online menu at least? I would really appreciate some input. This is my first time as a vegan going to a restaurant like Cracker Barrel that doesn't have any obvious vegan selections.

Thanks in advance! :)

I did some deep digging on their site and sadly, noticed this in tiny print:
We want to make sure you know that some of our offerings, like Turnip Greens, Green Beans, Corn Muffins, Hashbrown Casserole and Pinto Beans, are made the old-fashioned way using meat seasonings and are not strictly vegetarian. Please ask your server about any particular dish if you have any questions.

*sigh!* I like how they call it "old fashioned" ... makes it seem "quaint" ... *grumbles*

I'm sorry. I went there many, many years ago... I ate side dishes. I don't remember which ones, but I do remember not seeing that *fine print* you saw.
:(

The thing I hate most about going to American restaurants (meat &potatoes) is that everyone gets to look at the poor, suffering little veg*an. When they see us looking at the miserable little salad with nothing on it, they see how *terrible* it must be to live without meat.

I want to scream, "no, take me to any ethnic resturaunt around and I will have tons of stuff to eat!"

Pretend you are sick. You can either be sick and not go, or only order a plate of lettuce and a glass of water because of your tummy ache. Actually, you may want to make in "woman issues;" if you say you're sick, they may think you are lacking in protein.
:)

Good luck. Sorry you have to go to lame Cracker Barrel

I really feel for you! Step into the Gift Shop and buy yourself some candy!

Ask the waitress if they have a totally vegan entre. They might! Ask about pancakes.

i used to work at one. the hashbrown cassarole is great, s is the man n cheese u can order brekfast all day at most of them so u could try that as wee they have a veggie plate too and you could als order a salad the squash is excellent there too the veggie plate comes w ur choice of any 5 side items ranging from corn to fries they have a lot to choose from

wow are you screwed...just be careful ordering vegetables even because i was just there the other day and many of their vegetables are prepared with meat stock. maybe just a salad? good luck

Uhm,Good luck!Maybe you can get a soda and eat the ice?I went to a mexican restaurant not too long ago and their menu only had FOUR items.Four items?I got stuck with a soda and ate the ice.Not everyone in my extended family knows I'm vegan and they though I was starving myself.I went to a steakhouse before too and they put butter on my plain baked potato and my vegetables were served in a cup that had butter in the bottom.I got really upset, you know, because how hard can it be to not put butter on a baked potato? And my steamed veggies were served in butter.Yeah,so I didn't eat that night. When someone messes up something really simple(like a salad, baked potato) and makes it unvegan it just gets on my nerves and ruins my appetite.

On wiki it said they have an egg replacement that might be okay for vegetarians.

Aww.. That , I will say sadly was one of my fave places before I was veg...haven't been there since. Im pretty possitive they have fresh fruit...and maybe there cinnamon apples? Im sure they can help you out! Good Luck !!!

You're scr*wed to put it politely!!! Don't even THINK about mentioning that your vegan there. Just make up an excuse for only ordering a glass of water! It might actually be safer to not even do that. Cracker Barrel is one of 'those' places that is notorious for "teaching those damn hippies a lesson".

GOOD LUCK (You'll need it)!

eat ahead of time and just drink tea - unless their tea is made the old fashioned way...mmmm pork lard tea....

seriously I have been in these situations with work cause there are lots of client outings to places with no real food...I drink a lot of tea...and eat before or after....

I never had a problem just ordering a diet coke and eating later, depsite the grumbling from everyone else. Cheaper on the wallet too. I'm used to complaints and worries over my eating habits though, as I've always been incredibly picky. So many traumatizing food experiences will do that to you.

I think you're stuck eating ahead of time and ordering a nice green salad with oil and vinegar or a lemon wedge. Exciting, I know. Just make it clear you don't want the cheese, bacon bits, egg, croutons, or who knows what else they put in their salads. Tell them you have allergies if necessary. And I wouldn't trust any of their dressings, even if they have a vinaigrette. I just found out the balsamic vinaigrette at Sweet Tomatoes isn't even vegetarian. They might have a fruit salad as well. You can also try calling the restaurant and asking about any options they might not advertise. Bon appetit! ;-)

Oh i feel so sorry I can understand ur dilemma as I've gone thru something much horrible then this....I'm allergic to eggs and it's such an impossible thing to find things which r not even touched by the chefs with good washed hands.......
Newayz wat u can do is eat something filling u up before u leave home that day and keep some space so that u can order a fruit salad or a veg. Salad....Or u can simply ask then if they have anything in veggies but be clear that u don't need meat stock used in it. Else do directly for some fruit salad with a great dessert. Hope this helps...wish u have a good time :) take care.

Tossed salad seems to be vegan... with maybe french fries or onion rings if you eat those..

Yeah its going to suck, I'm a vegetarian and i went there... it was awful. Stay away from the vegetable plate, all there vegetables have like a sugar sauce... its disgusting.

Well good luck! sorry about this misfortune

I do Vegan & usual do Raw so I understand your needs. They have salads, just order them with Veggies only, no cheese, eggs etc. Vinegar & Oil on the side, They make super baked potatoes(huge) order without butter, cheese etc. Olive oil is good on them if they have nothing else you can use.
None of the cooked veggies are animal fat free, they contain butter or bacon etc. They are premade so there is no ordering them without the "southern style" seasonings. Muffins will be made with eggs, not sure about the biscuits they may be safe. I know when I could eat them they were very good.
Even though it is not a Vegan friendly Menu I go to them alot when I travel, usually they are clean, decent food, & safe for a woman traveling alone.
Consider eating something before you go, then the limited choices will not be so hard to deal with.
This is "Grandmother's Day & not really about your eating. Play it low key, have a sense of humor, be kind.
I speak from expreience. Today I went to a Tea-Reception for a artist friend, except some strawberries(garnish) there was nothing for me to eat. I ate a Larabar on the way over.
lots of luck

I went there a few months ago with my aunts
and mother. The onion rings are cooked in
a vegetable oil and they taste really good.
The carrots come with a brown sugar glaze.
So it will depend on how strict you are about
the type of sugar you accept. The so called
green salad is made out of lettuce. If you're
used to having actual greens in a salad
like I am you may find that insufficient.
There is a salad dressing available made
out of olive oil and vinegar. They won't
change around any of the vegetables
that contain meat flavoring despite their
fine print on the menu suggesting that they
will. This makes most of the veggies unavailable.

You can also order orange juice.
If I'm not mistaken you can order
a baked potato with nothing on it.
You maybe able to get some olive
oil on the side.

Good luck, it's a terrible place to
eat for a vegan.
