Are apples not calorie free?!
Are apples not calorie free?
I was shocked when I read the lable on a bag of apples that I bought from wal-mart. It said that there where about 130 calories per apple. And that they where coated in wax.
Are there apples that are calorie free? Can I get them at wal-mart? I think that it may be the wax on the apples that are making them so, calorieful.
Can I get them without wax?
Answers:
Yes apples have calories and I only but organic that are not covered in wax , But I have seen a very important point overlooked here .. Apples are a " negative " calorie food .. that means it takes more calories for you to digest and process the apple then the actual calories in the apple ..so eat all the apples you wish and you will actually lose a few calories doing so .. I eat apples daily and even right before sleep .. enjoy ..

All apples have a calorific value , apparently about 59 calories per 100 grams that you eat.
Nothing to do with the wax.
I hate to tell you this, but anything that is good for you is not going to be calorie-free... except water. Im not sure why you would think that of apples because they have lots of natural sugars in them (and they are food...)
Remember that it is not about how many calories, but how nutritious the food is. Apples have lots of fiber and are good for you, so eat them anyway.
Everything you eat has some kind of calories to it if it is natural. The natural sugars in apples are the reason. Apples and other fruits contain Frutose. Calories are the nutrional scale to measure how much it contributes to actual energy or in the case of overeating fat storage. The only natural product that doesn't contain calories is pure water.
I thought apples were about 40 calories...at least that's according to the Franklin/Covey day planner calorie counter! No, they shouldn't be covered in wax! Try buying them somewhere else, maybe a farmers market. At 40 calories, it will take at least that many calories to eat it! Maybe that is why you thought they were calorie free.
Why would you want a calorie free apple? That makes no sense. You don't get nutrition without calories. 130 calories is next to nothing. There is no such thing as a calorie-free apple, or any other fruit... or ANY food whatsoever. Don't buy your apples in a bag, unless you're buying from a fruit and vegetable mart. Walmart is NOT a good grocery store. It's not even a grocery store for that matter. That's the last place I would expect to buy healthy food. If you want good apples, go to a good grocery store, or even an organic market, like Whole Foods, Wild Oats. Trader Joe's would be your best choice if you have one near you... most healthy, and probably the best price. Wal-mart.... noooooo!!! But buy your apples buy the pound, not by the bag.
The average apples is about 65 calories.. according to this site, which is where I always check for nutrition facts about many foods.
Nothing you eat is calorie free. Calories are where the energy come from, and in apples it's healthy calories that will give you energy. If you don't like the wax, peel them, scrub with a vegetable brush, or buy a different brand.
You really shouldnt worry about calories if you're eating healthy food. I dont know anyone who got obese on apples and oranges.
As a vegan (and a health freak), I feel I can eat more and not gain weight, at the same time I dont feel hungry as often. It's WHAT you eat that matters. So if you like apples, trust me you can eat plenty without worry.
Calories = energy.
Absolutely all foods have calories in them. Otherwise, there would be no point, there would be no nutrients in them and they wouldn't give anything to the body.
They put wax on them to make them shiny and protect the skin, but you can polish it off, or peel them if you're that way inclined. You can get unwaxed apples, but it makes little to no difference to the calorific value of the apple. I buy unwaxed organic apples, because they taste better and are more ecofriendly.
Apples are high in sugar, but it's a good sugar and they're full of fibre too, so don't stop eating them simply because they have more calories than water...
The trace amounts of wax are inconsequential.
(Hang on, Walmart sell fruit?? Are they plastic display fruit? I thought Walmart was a department store, not a grocery store?)
Lots of apples get smeared with shellac (an insect secretion, often has dead Lac insects mixed in as well) to make them look more 'attractive'. You can get them without the wax, if you have trouble in your supermarket or grocery store, try an organic box scheme (where you can have a box of fresh, organic fruit and veg delivered to your door).
Only water is calorie free.
Although 130 calories seems high, consider an apple as a snack in place of a bag of crisps or chocolate bar. The apple contains fibre, nutrients, and pectin (good for the gut). The chocolate will be loaded with sugar, possibly e-numbers. The crisps will be loaded with salt, and MSG among other things. Calories are there for energy. It's when you start counting calories that you become obsessed with your weight. To get a great body you need a balanced diet, exercise and rest. Some people use far more calories than others, so even the guide of 1500-1700 calories a day for women may be irrelevant for an extremely active person etc.
All fruits and vegetables have calories, whether waxed or in it's natural state. Just not as much as more mainstream digestables though!
For example a medium banana has about 112 calories, and a large avocado has 235 calories.
