Do all vegeterians aim at being vegan one day...?!

Question:

Do all vegeterians aim at being vegan one day...?

I always wondered that..
And if not, why do you think vegetarianism is better than being vegan..
Why are you vegan/vegetarian?

I was planning on going vegetarian but not so much because i am "OH SOOO AGAINST ANIMAL KILLING.." [i think it is sad..but i think people like meat so its ok..?] well i was going to do it as a diet...should i or not? is it wrong..

Answers:
No, not *all* vegetarians aim, plan or consider being vegan.

Right off the bat you've got a significant number of vegetarians that are veggie for religious reasons! Very few of the Hindu veggies would consider veganism as an option (for example). I've never seen any studies on the topic but I'd guess that the majority of vegetarians that are seriously considering it as a step to veganism are the ones that went veggie primarily due to concerns over the treatment of 'farm' animals.
I don't think you can make any argument that veganism is 'worse' than vegetarianism. You CAN make a valid argument that in the meatish world in which we live it's much easier to be vegetarian.

I'm vegetarian for matters of faith, the only reason I'm not of the five letter variety is that I do (on the odd occasion) still buy a few products that have traces of milk/egg by-products. Since I started boycotting Kellogg's (i.e. MS Farms, Worthington, Loma Linda) a while back my purchases of dairy/egg products dropped to near zero. Looking around I've got a few Amy's and Annie's Natural products that have some dairy in them and I still have a box of Worthing Fillets(egg) left, that's about it. It's NOT required by my faith to remove the dairy/egg but I've pretty much done it anyway, if I ever do start using the five letter word to describe myself you can be sure I've eliminated the last of that kind of stuff from my diet, to do otherwise would be to lie.

Going lacto/ovo vegetarian eliminates most of the cruelty attributable to diet. If you want to reduce demand for animal products it's a good start and if enough folks went vegetarian the economic rational for milk/eggs would be destroyed. Even with government subsidies both dairy and egg farms depend on sales of unwanted males and spent females to make a profit. If folks stopped eating meat that market for surplus animals would dry up and many dairy/egg farms would have to close. At the same time reduced animal consumption of soy etc would result in more companies (like Amy's) switching away from dairy/egg as economic ratios till further towards veggie alternatives.

Vegetarians do not eat fish. A fish eater is a Piscivore. Spread the correct word!

no i dont think so...
not everyone could give up on dairy

I am a vegetarian. I have NO desire to become a vegan. I can see not eating eggs, but it does no harm to the animals to get milk from them. Being vegan is really difficult. I have friends who are and it doesn't look fun. It's also harder to get enough calcium. I think being a vegan is generally taking things too far.

On an aside: I have never seen a fat vegan. I have seen bigger vegetarians, but vegans are all quite slim(after a while at any rate).

i think that it depends on the person.
i'm vegetarian and i plan on being vegan in the future, but i also has a friend who knows she will never give up dairy products

I understand the idea behind both, vegans wont eat anything that comes from any animal so not even eggs or milk, and vegetarians will eat that stuff but both wont kill animals to eat.

I wouldn't go out of my way to eat meat, I don't understand why anyone would need to eat rabbit or eel or cockatoo just because it's something that's not the normal and it makes people feel good. But people do need to eat some meat we are after all half meat eaters so cow or fish isn't really ok to them but it's gotta be done to live, some people just can't get used to those fake meat burgers.

there's always 'Level 4 Vegan', which means not eating anything that casts a shadow.

uummm......i plan on staying vegetarian but with vegan philosophy

does that make sense?

i tried going vegan....but instead found that buying organic cheeses and eggs were better suited for me and my likes.....i do my best to buy organic everything and buy only products that are animal cruelty free and good for the enviroment

being vegan has more do with lifestyle choices than strictly diet

and i don't really think that being vegetarian is "better" than vegan it just isn't for me but like i said i do my best

I think it all depends on why you are a vegetarian. If you are a vegetarian only because you don't like animals being hurt, I doubt you would care much about being a vegan.

I do it because of the environmental impact and the health issues. I like to know that my eating habits aren't killing me or killing the environment.

I am vegan and will always stay that way.

Milking animals and taking eggs from chickens or other birds does hurt them. They cut the beaks off many chickens in bird houses because they pack them together so tight that they get frantic and tend to peck each other to death..no beak = no pecking.

Cows need to be constantly pregnant and pumped full of hormones to produce milk the ways they do currently. Even free range cows and animals have it just as bad, most times free range specifies these animals can't be given any types of antibiotics or treatments..so if they get sick or stay sick, in their own feces which is common..they just keep them that way till they die off, continueing to milk them.

If you were born, raised in a yard and kept there by fences (which is the lucky cows that dont get stuck in milking stalls there whole short life) and the only reason your owner (would you want to have an owner..some humans had owners a few hundred years ago, no one liked that) kept you around and raised you initially was so he could tug on your **** long enough to take your milk and likely your children when you are forcefully impregnated. If you don't consider that hurting an animal i'd be frightened to know how your parents raised you or you treat your friends..

I have plenty of other reasons for being vegan which are all most the shared ones of other full vegans. We need to stop driving this society with the dependency and cruel treatment of other flesh creatures...it'll be the end of us all way before any natural disaster or other rare possibile total annihilation. I guess I should say we as in north america...european and asian people still have a chance I think.

I want to go vegan but it's kind of impossible at my age living with meat eating parents. I'm not going to definately do it but i do intend to look into it.

no. not at all. i was first vegetarian but then switched to veganism becuase i learned more about it, but that DOES NOT mean any vegetarian has to.
im vegan because i like that fact that im not consuming ANYTHING that was alive or could have been alive (eggs). no other animals drink other animals milk so why do we? its weird to think of a giraffe drinking cats milk, why do we drink cows milk? and cheese is technically old rotten milk. and meat---thats just disgusting. its flesh. i wouldnt eat you, so why eat any other living thing?
