How do u know the difference?!

Question:

How do u know the difference?

How do you know the difference between omega fish oils and omega plant oils?

Answers:
Most products that contain them will specify. Many newer products are beginning to state "Vegan" right on the package. If in doubt, keep looking for a different product. Most staff at health food or natural food stores should know.

it should say on the packaging

put them both in water, one will sink and one will swim!?

The two main types of Omega Oil that we need is Omega 3 and Omega 6. Commercially these are extracted from cold water fish (tuna, salmon, etc) and Flax seed oil. There is no difference between the two, but one source is suitable for vegetarians obviously.

I seem to recall that the Food Standards Agency has recommended eating no more than 4 servings of fish per week due to the levels of toxins present as contamination (mercury and dioxin) So going for the vegetarian supplement option may be wise even if your not vegetarian :) You could go with Cod Liver Oil too, but this is obviously a no-go for vegetarians!

If you go to a health food store and ask for Omega supplements for vegetarians they will probably give you Flax seed oil... I would advise getting capsules (vege ones obviously) though as it tastes foul just as oil!

Most store bought vitamin supplements will NOT use the vegetarian source of Omega oils unless clearly indicated - so you need to take care.

As far as the actual differences between the vegetarian and fish sourced varieties.. there are none at all. The fatty Acids are exactly the same when extracted - in fact the Flax seed source is far cheaper and more environmentally sound :).

I also understand that there are Omega Fatty Acids in other vegetable and olive oils too but in much lower quantities.

If it says suitable for 'vegetarians and vegans' they'll be from plants.

If not then it's almost sure to be from oily fish.

Can someone please explain the obsession with Omega Oils to me ?

This is NOT a dig at this particular question/er, but it seems to be a recurring question these days.

I've been veggie for 27 years, and am 41 years old, and its only in the past 2 years i've been told these are essential to my diet.

Sometimes i thing we have an obsession with fact and figures rather than just simply ensuring we have a balanced diet - this skill comes naturally to people if they go with instinct.

In answer to your question, it'll say on the packaging. If it doesn't state the source, veggies should keep away.
