For Raw Foodists who know their stuff, since I can't find answers online?!

Question:

For Raw Foodists who know their stuff, since I can't find answers online?

My husband and I have been talking about a vegan Raw/ Living food diet for optimal health and weight loss (90%, as I'd like to keep rolled oats and quinoa in our diets). If we do this, it will be long term since the equipment isn't cheap! So my question has to do with the fact I am breastfeeding. I know I shouldn't detox when breastfeeding because toxins will get into my milk supply and transfer to baby. However, as I haven't eaten meat in almost a year and scarcely for 8 months prior, do I have as much to worry. Why I ask this is because everything I read has been saying that to stop eating meat is the biggest trigger of the detox. Also just changing up my eating habits, I personally don't believe would detox me as fast as say taking detox herbs and the such. If I'm wrong please tell me! Those who know what they are talking about, please inform me wisely as this is the only thing keeping me from taking this step. Thank you!

Your concern is a legitimate one. Pregnancy should not be taken for granted nor lightly, and when it comes to shifting in dietary habits while pregnant, preventive measures should be taken.

Just by following a strict vegetarian (vegan) diet your body will not be necesarily forced to enter into a race to rushly get rid of toxins. It takes a lot more to get that kind of reaction. Detoxification is a complex process that occurs at different scales inside the body. After been for a while on raw foods, your body will be able to utilize both sulphur and selenium optimally to "cleanse out" or "flush away" cellular toxins particularly. But cellular debris, deactivated viruses, partially dead bacterias, semi-solid residues, etc., will not be forced out without special assistance or help. So, don't expect anything rough to go on in your body.

There is a very valid concern about rawfoodists and their vit. B12 intake and/or availability. If you are going raw right now, please, get a sub-lingual vit. B12 and use it as recommended in the label, though you may easily need double that amount.

When you stop eating meat, nitrogen and urea processing in the liver will go smoother. Therefore, a lot more nutrients stored in the liver are going to be preserved untouched for future use. So, you'll be getting more "nutritional equity" in your favor.

Your perception about herbs and detoxification rate is absolutely right. And I would not counsel you to use any herb until you are well into your third trimestre.

Increase your intake of nuts, eat more beans (but soak them well before cooking), take a multivitamin/multimineral formula regularly, eat a lot of greens, but beware of celery (it is abortive specially for the first three months of pregnancy), and learn how to combine your foods pretty well--which is the key not to fail as a rawfoodist.

well the minute you change to a completly vegan diet your body is going to respond. there are certain protiens and such that are found easily in meats but are haard to find in plant based foods. you really have to be careful becasue some of those amino acids and protiens and all that good stuff are important to your body. but there are good vegan sites on the internet. i wish i could remeber off the top of my head. if you want to know farther info just email me. im sure i could find my recipes somewhere. as far as your concern of your breatfeeding, if your concerned it would be bad for your baby then wait until you stop breast feeding.

I would just be careful about detoxing since your are currently breast feeding. Your question would be must more straight forward if you were not currently breastfeeding. You could check with your pediatrician and see about changing your baby to formula and then begin the detoxification process. Also, there should be support groups or books on vegan diets, etc. and detoxification at your local book store, preferably a vegan book store. Just make sure you are getting the proper nutrients that you need to substantiate your metabolic demands.

I apologize if this was not too helpful, but I would not do anything until you have finished breastfeeding.

Good luck.

I cannot find for sure, either, but I would imagine that since it takes a day or two to enter the detox period, that you would fine breastfeeding the first day, and if you pumped and properly stored the milk, your baby would be ok during the time you were detoxing... Also, the limited meat should help your detox be less toxic... As for the converted chemicals created by cooking, I would think your baby was already getting that? I don't know.. I would say it would be ok, just have some pre-detox milk at hand to offer... But it's your child, use your maternal instinct... You'll know what's right for your baby.

I think these people can help.
When I started doing RAW to keep the detoxing slowed so I would not become too ill to work I ate a small amount of cooked VEGAN foods in the evening. In theory it also prolongs the whole transition so is not ideal.
Here is another super resource

Lots of luck

Very true that the biggest trigger in detox is to stop eating meat, however, you will also detox when you cut out cooked foods. The safest and easiest way to detox is by eating raw fruit. Avocado will provide you with plenty of protein, and now that it is summer there is a large amount of fresh fruits available. Within a few days you will start to detox, and you will also know when the detox is over. Just make sure you are getting enough calories to support yourself and your little one.
